Re: Harbor Freight Trailer Containment Thread

Returned another of the replacement replacement wheels yesterday to HF.

You'd think people making wheels would keep the most important aspect of a wheel in mind. IT IS ROUND

Also, the old rims would pretty much self center on the hub. New wheels have a larger "hub ring" and it takes multiple tries to get it centered using just the lug nuts. I wish I had just pulled the bad tires off the old rims and asked for new tires.

Garandman, let me know if you end up finding a good place to get diamond plate aluminum. My wood is getting tired.

Just measured the HF bracket and it is roughly 9” high and 4” wide. It only extends under the fender around 3”. So the above may not be long enough. These might be better.

    Or the RedLine.

    Thanks, Dana.

Yeah, I found the stuff at eTrailer. Bonus is that they also have rotomolded fenders that are a lot lighter and won't vibrate the brackets to the point of failure. (I chucked the fenders in the weeds along with the brackets). I'll probably just go that route. Yay winter projects!

While my tire survived the incident it's going to need replacement. Thinking I'll just pass on HF... buy a tire and spoon it on myself, or just go to my regular tire shop.

These guys are right down the street from me in Dot:
    http://www.jfreeman.com/aluminum-sheeting/

They sell 4,x10’ sheets, so I can have it cut in half for the 5’x8’ Trailer. Going to cost $300 for a 4x@10 x 0.125” but light, strong, corrosion-resistant setup.

The same Chinese-made Carlisle tires HF is using for replacements is for sale on Amazon for about $30. The same tire is available US made, for substantially more. TheIglu has had bad luck but the two we got run perfectly.

We purchased an Aluma utility trailer and plan to sell our HF once we get the other one set up. It sure served it's purpose. I'll have the spare and two HF chocks FS then as well.

Edit: Market seems pretty good for these trailers: sent out a text message and it was for sale for three seconds....

Got in the Bearing Buddies (model 2047) to replace the dust caps.

Standard US 1 hubs have a dust cap diameter of 1.98 (50.3mm). The HF hubs are 52mm (2.047). Visited a number of auto parts stores, none of whom had the metric bearings, seals, dust caps or bearing buddies required.

We put 10 D rings on this trailer before covering: Four down each side, one front, one back. They proved terrifically useful. But they corroded pretty badly, particularly the two behind the rear wheels.

My last act before moving this on was to replace them all with stainless steel versions, with stainless 1/4-20 bolts and nyloc nuts. $2.50 each.

Where'd you source the Bearing Buddies? And were there any complications with install?

Got them from eTrailer. Block of wood, BMF hammer and you are done in 10 seconds.
