WITHOUT HEAT: What's the hassle worth?

So we had the old boiler changed out for a new one because the old one was plugging up from internal leaks.

    Thursday: Noon.
Guy shows up and cuts out old system.
    No heat, No hot water

    Friday 11:Am arrival
Leaves about 1M for "parts" never returns.
(that evening is the company X-mas party we find out)

Saturday I leave at 2M (I gave up on him) he shows at 4M (plus 1 point for him)
Still NO HEAT, system isn't even close to hitched up.

Sunday day off.............. (Even I can see that one)

Monday: Two guys attatch system and start it up.
They find out controler is bad so Head guy orders part in Billerica.
Other guy comes back (6M or so) with another part that doesn't work. (Not ordered Billerica part)
We fire up system for hot water and some heat 70, but have to shut off it off by the kitchen emergency switch 'cuz unit won't shut down by the thermostat. 58 degrees in the morning.

Tuesday: Head guy shows up with correct controller and said other guy never went to get it. Hence the issue Monday not running by the thermostat.
He cleans up and collect $6,000 in checks (its a Home Depot deal) you pay or they shut off system and lien your house.

We pay 5700 and $300 in two different checks.
I write the owner a letter asking for the $300 as a courtesy/settlement for the 4 1/2 days without Heat and hot water.

Now of course I left out some details for a short read.
Only the Mrs yelled at someone on the phone.
I was helpful and assisted during the "project". I did replumb a zone overnight (guy said it was a days work) after I got hurt at F1 karting into a wall. (Thursday night) I completed my end Friday at 3M

So am I "asking too much?"

    Clarification

Of course they say they'll be no heat and hot water.
    But for 5 days?
    1 day okay.
    2 days.................maybe
3 days and they planned poorly IMHO
    4 days WTF?
4 1/2 Heat and hot water for a few hours
    5 days.........ROOKIE job?

We talking a planned (appointment) installation here not a NO heat call. Old system is in need of replacement but I kept it running for a month or so...........................

Whoever did your install was clearly behaving rather unprofessionally, especially the part about the "parts run" which was equal to a dash for some spiked egg nog on the company's dime.

But why the hell did you schedule a furnace swap for the day before Christmas???

The fact is, you have your new furnace, so the only thing you have lost is a couple days of heat and hot water at your house, which would be a tough thing to talk a judge into, $$ wise.

That job could have been done in less than a day, easy. All day if you were putting in central air too.

Man that sucks!! I would definately bitch, not just to the installers but to home depot if you got it through them. I work for a plumbing and heating company, when we change a boiler, we do it all in a day even if we have to stay all night. So bitch away at them!

I would have bitched when he left the first day. as it is i would call homedepot and bitch up a storm. tell them you had to stay at friends because of no heat or hot water, your time to wait for them to complete the job, aggravation. I would never have put up with what you did.

Talk to the manager at home depot first and keep going higher until your satisfied. you need to start at the manager so if you need to go higher you can showyou tried to resolve it

Thats bullshit! This is a house right? sounds like Heating HW via Baseboard Rad. and Domestic HW fed off same boiler?

Should have been done in a day, maybe less..unless your basement looks like a shiny penny now and they went over/above what they had to do?

5 days without heat in Cali. = nice!
5 days without heat in New England = should probably take your biz. to Cali.

was this HVAC Engineering per chance? (yellow trucks I think).

did they at least put in new traps for the price of the install? (or do you just have 1?)

    No, it was these guys

............from a Woburn Co., that Home Depot dispatched.

They didn't even go to the fire department to get a permit either...........
