Honda Foreman 500's - School Me Quick

Alright now that we have a decent size driveway I'm using it as an excuse to get a wheeler. I've pretty much landed on the Foreman 500 and have a few options.

    1) New 2018 left over ES EPS with a 60" blade, upgraded rims/tires, heated grips, etc for $10600. I'd rather upgrade to a Rubicon with IRS - but holy shit the sticker price started adding up quick.

    2) Almost new 2018 ES EPS used (only 28 miles) with all the same features as option 1 with LED bars and a back seat/cargo as well for $7000 firm. Looks pristine from what I can tell.

    3) Used 2013 ES (no EPS or heated grips) with 400 miles with a 50" blade for $4900 with "room on the price". This one looks pretty clean from photos, though the plow shows signs of use.

Originally I was going to just go new since these get pretty beat up, but I can do these used ones without a small loan.

I've plowed with a 450 wheeler before for a few seasons, so I know the pros/cons of doing so. Will probably pick up a walk behind blower for trim work and pathways as well.

Of course it'll be a trail toy too but most of it's life will be plowing and yard work with a couple trips up north per year.

    Thoughts?

Yea they're all FI. I wouldn't really have any interest in a carb'd model.

Itís a Honda utility 4-wheeler, get a used one as old as possible for as cheap as possible and enjoy it forever.

Older utility Hondaís are some ridiculously reliable machines.

After plowing without power steering for a couple years, if you have the option and are going to plow go EPS.

Whatever you land on, just make sure you get one with independent rear suspension... other than that it's a great "utility" machine. Meaning that's it's not the fastest, it's not the most off-road capable, it's not anywhere near the most powerful... but it will outlast literally anything.

So basically buy the oldest machine for the least amount of money that has all the most expensive modern features, got it lol

EPS does sound like a big one for my purposes. The durability was the selling point for me on the Honda. I already have a Ducati to babysit for performance fun.

Re: Honda Foreman 500's - School Me Quick

On the durability front, I'm using a 2006 Polaris to plow with, it's had the crap beat out of it for years before I got it and I'm not being kind either. Still trucking right along. I'm going to throw axles and wheel bearings at it some day as I've got a torn boot and am too lazy to put all that effort in when full parts are so cheap... but that's just 'cause I'm picky and not 'cause it's acting up.

I've been running my Arctic Cat 400 for over ten years now. Plowing, skidding firewood, towing shit around the yard & neighborhood, pulling shit out of the lake, trail building etc., and trail riding. I'm not remotely gentle with it.

While I haven't really had many issues with it's size/power, there are times when I wish it was a big bore. So much in fact, that I'll be selling off that and a couple other wheelers that no longer really have any need in the family and getting myself something in the 700 range.

    FWIW - I'll be selling that Arctic Cat, a 2009 Grizzly 125, and a 2007 Raptor 700 FI.

Remember also, that I abused it pulling my firewood out as well, for several years, till I got my UTV.

be watchful about getting a better workhorse with a larger engine, in many cases the advantage of larger displacement is defeated with a shitty gear ratio

That's why I think I'll be happy with a 500 for my uses. My buddy's father has an 800 and it's a BEAST... even with tracks on it, I was blown away.

Just shot the email off "committing" to the used 2018. Told him I'm down as long as it's what he says it is. Might put better than stock tires on it though.

Thoughts on chains vs upgraded tires on pavement for plowing?

The only times I've run out of traction with boring normal ATV tires is when I try to push way more of a pile of wet snow than I should in one shot. At that point I'm on dry pavement, chains won't help. I've actually contemplated getting dedicated car snows for the rear...?

Probably looking to get around $3000 for it, which includes an immaculate set of Kenda Claws that have about 600 Kanadian Kutter ice screws in each (rear), and the shitty OEM fronts with ice screws. Only mods are PRM skid plate and A-arm guards. It'll need a new battery, I'm sure. Very low usage.

I won't take a dime less than $1500 for the (2009) Grizzly 125. Obviously ridden by children it's entire life. Well maintained, etc. I'll be tossing a new chain & sprockets on it soon and replacing a headlight (it broke when we were unloading it a few weekends ago), and giving it a servicing before I let it go.

That thing is SICK! Do u think the Rancher 420 would be capable enough for light yard work and plowing a level driveway along with a snowblower? I kinda wanna go new.

Thanks man. When I was using my buddy's 450 to plow it seemed to do the job fine with chains on. It wasn't a beast though, so we'd do a swipe every few inches to make it easy. Key was to push the snow as far back as absolutely possible. I don't have any experience with the Rancher... I'm kinda new to the ATV world.
