    Honda Lawnmower Won't Start

ok so i know this is the wrong season for this but my grandfather has this self propelled Honda HRR216K9VKAA lawn mower which was bought from home depot in 2016...it stopped working this past fall...sometimes it feels like it has no compression and then sometimes i can't even pull the cord...have to pull the plug and try to spin the blade by hand to get it loose before i can pull the cord...still under warranty so i'll be bringing it to a dealer to get serviced after i change the oil...i checked the basics...i have spark (grounded the plug and tested with 2 different spark plugs)...dumped the fuel and put in new fuel with seafoam...pulled and cleaned the carb in my ultrasonic...tried using some starter fluid in the carb intake...pulled the spark plug and put some marvel mystery oil in there to loosen things up...been working on it in my attached garage where it's somewhat warm but i didn't want to void the warranty before getting it looked at by a dealer by starting to pull too much apart but does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on with this thing?...valves stuck?...piston?...i just want to have an idea before dropping it off...thanks

Probably the kill mechanism that attaches to the handle. You know, the big bar you have to hold down to fire it up. That kills spark and inhibits piston travel to stop the motor as quick as possible.

Check the valve cover. People love to slam the valve cover into things like porch steps, thus stoving it in. Said stoved valve cover makes contact with the top of the valve. Which causes the valve to either stay open or stay closed, depending where in the stroke the crank is. Which explains both of the symptoms you described. Remove the valve cover, pound it back out with a hammer, gently. Re-install and give it a go.

FYI, if that's the issue, it wont be covered by warranty. Bending the valve cover by hitting porch steps isn't a manufacturer defect.

Report back... Tell me I was right.

thanks...i have spark...pulled the plug and grounded against the machine and had someone grab the bar and pull the cord to verify so i don't see it being this

thanks...the valve cover does not have a dent...i did see this on youtube and checked that right away...so i don't believe this is the issue either unless it's so slightly dented that i can't see it

It doesn't take very much. Pull the cover and give the cord a gentle tug. See if the motor frees up.

think doing this will void the warranty?...they will probably be able to tell since i will have to replace the liquid gasket

Doubtful. Certainly not if its a decent shop.

And I actually think it's a real gasket (could be wrong, its been a while). Just be gentle.

You removing a service cover on a user serviceable bit does not impact your warranty at all.

I once heard you could take a honda engine set it on fire and throw it down and hill and it would run. Have you set your engine on fire lately???

I have a Honda push mower that I believe is a 1995 and it still runs perfect.

Does it show any sign of firing when you use the starting fluid? Have you changed the plug? I've had plugs that show spark outside of the cylinder but would blow the spark out under compression. When you have to spin it over with the blade have you tried removing the plug to see if it's hydro locked from gas/oil?

he hit a rock and the fly wheel rotated on the crankshaft. There is a keyway and it's now bent.

    That's what it sounds like...
That or somehow the timing belt jumped...
Take the pull start cover off and then the flywheel nut.. you can usually see if the key broke..
I've even seen heavy grass spin a flywheel..
If you can't tell by looking at it, take s picture of the flywheel after taking off the nut.. before you take the but off, jam the blade with a piece of wood to stop the motor from spinning

yep, done that, sheared the key, had to put a new one in (on a B&S, not on a Honda)

no firing...used 2 different plugs (the other plug was off an identical mower that ran fine)...it wasn't before i added the marvel mystery oil...after i added that i'm sure it was but i will be doing an oil change on it this weekend hopefully and then try to start it again

If you have good compression, spark and you spray some carb cleaner into the carb and it doesn't run for a few seconds then you have a timing issue.. either the flywheel key or timing belt

there would also be a groove cut in the crankshaft the keyway is 50/50 in both. Hard to tell in this picture but I don't see the groove in the crank

You shouldn't be able to see the groove in the crank, as it's more of a pocket than a groove that runs to the end of the crank typically. That allows the flywheel to slide on and off with the key in place but keeps the key from walking out the end of the crank.

    Honda Lawnmower Won't Start

I had changed the oil...cleaned the plug, checked gap, checked spark and tried to start it again...no go...then I pulled the starter cord housing and the flywheel nut...yea I canít really tell...itís not like an electric motor keyway...doesnít go all the way to the top...Iím just going to bring it in for warranty work

some you can, my TORO for one, and some you can't. Wasn't sure on the Honda.

Interesting, do they use a moon shaped woodruff key or some other shape in that setup?
