    Re: Honda Lawnmower Won't Start

    tech did the following:
1 technical service bulletin out for rear wheel brackets...warranty fix
2 silica sand in fuel from fuel degradation...flushed fuel system
    3 swapped out spark plug...precautionary
4 timing belt jumped due to hitting something...reset belt
    5 blade bent and dull...straighten/balance/sharpen
6 flywheel key checked...it was ok (which i already checked

...still will not start...2-5 i will have to pay for since that was my fault...

7...pulling valve cover tomorrow to check for stuck valves...i'm guessing this won't be warranty work either

4 and probably 7 are the issues...the blade i would have just sharpened and bent back myself like i do each year and it would have been ok...i used a spark plug from an identical mower to test and i ground tested mine and they sparked similarly so i'm sure that was fine...silica sand settles and nothing was in the carb when i cleaned it so i'm sure that wasn't an issue either

Timing belt? On a push mower? We sure about this?

"Silica sand" from fuel degradation? Never in my life encountered such a substance as a result of fuel....and silica IS sand.

Judging by the fact that we are talking about a bent blade, I'm curious what as to what in the heck you hit, did it stop the engine dead and did the engine run after the blade bending incident?

Many Honda industrial engines have an overhead cam with a timing belt. You can also see it in the video Point37 posted when they remove the valve cover.

How did he reset the timing belt if he didn't take the valve cover off?

Didn't watch the video but holy shit, color me amazed at Honda managing to reinvent the wheel. I imagine these belts have a service interval?

This is right from Honda's website:

Q: My GC series/Mini 4 Stroke series Honda Engine has an internal timing belt. How often do I have to change it?
A: Never. Honda's internal timing belt is 100% maintenance free.

It lasts the life of the engine, give or take .23 seconds.

yea personally i think the sand thing is bs...unless there was sand in one of the older gas cans...i'm not the only person who uses the mower but i know i didn't hit anything

Be very interesting to see if these engines are around in 20 or 30 years like the GX's.

Has anyone suggested not changing the oil and leaving it outside for a winter at Stoner's house?
