Need info (from anyone who played tackel football)

I'm just about to start playing ball on a local amature league. I haven't played since, like, grade school. My jr high / high school didn't have football. Hence, I am essentially going to be a total newbie. I am also a bit small for the game (5'10 / 160). As for position, I can't imagine that would put me anywhere other than speed positions, or on some special team. The only required equipment is helmet, mouth guard, shoulder, thigh / knee pads. Considering the above, what else should I be rocking? Also, I am far more concerned with staying in one piece than I am total mobility. Neck roll? Hip & tail bone? Elbow? Rib? Etc?

    Thanks in advance.

Neck roll and kidney belt I'd say. I haven't played since pop-warner either. I know my body couldn't take that kind of abuse now.

You definitely want hip and tail bone pads. Those are generally standard equipment. Usually you get whats called a girdle (sp?) and the hip and tail bone pads fit in it. Might want to consider a cup if you don't want your jewels in your stomach. I never used a kidney belt or neck roll, but I imagine it wouldn't hurt. I recommend talking to some others who have for e better opinion on that. Cleats are also a good idea or you'll have no grip (assuming you are on grass) if you try to make any moves or power through a tackle. Thats all I've got...its been a few years as well!

Oh yeah just thought of this. If you want to go all out, you could get knee braces and angle supports as well. I know a lot of college and pro lineman wear at least knee braces even though they dont have any knee problems (more prevention). However, this could get pricey and depends upon how much you are looking to spend.

Buy a case of tape and use it on your wrists and ankles as they will likely get sprained if ya don't.
sorry hamma I had too fix it up a bit.

This should do ya for your audition for "ROBOCOP 3 - Sadists Go Down" too

You're young and in good condition right? at 160 your prolly not going to be a lineman so expect to be geared for using your speed. Either offensive reciever or Defensive safety is where I'd expect a coach to put ya.

Did you ever see the movie "The Replacements"? Or "Varsity Blues" These will give you a decent idea as to what it would be like as far as equipment and stuff. Then again you could go the othe way and watch Sandler in "The Longest Yard. That could be what it's really like

Yeah cleats were just assumed. I played a bit bit way back when, and know all the stuff (girdle, etc). But was curious as to how much of that shit was for liability purposes v. what was actually practicle.

Do you still have to say good game when you slap your teammates on the ass? Or do they not have to say it when they slap yours?

Man, I was expecting some *good* jokes out of this thread!? This shit is more predicable than "bemused" as an answer for a poll, or Kham getting a ticket the next he leaves his house.

(and thanks for the answers, btw).

do not get an old fashioned girdle... they suck!.... get compression shorts w/ pockets for hip/ tail bone pads, i suggest knee pads that slide on, not fit in pants (stay in place better), neck rolls are good and they make you look bigger.... and for cleats, go with screw on, they grip a much much better than molded.

Actually, there was a girls rugby team (Harvard's?) that practed next to were my softball leauge played over the summer. Rugby is, no doubt, much cooler than American football. Cricket though...I'll take baseball over that one.

I played rugby for 7 years... puts american football to shame. The most intense, team-oriented, sportsmanlike sport on earth. I miss it.

What position did you play, Derek?

I was a scrum half usually, once in a while a fly half or a flanker.
