    Jeep Gladiator vs The World

I have been driving a 2018 Ford F150 Raptor for the past 2 years. The thing has 30k miles on it and has done a bunch of towing of my toy hauler and grocery getting. The thing is a YUGE pain in the A$$ to park and drive in the city. Any city but with my job in sales I am in Boston area often so I had to lease a small car to use for work. I'm tired of the expense of both of these vehicles. So last night I checked out the Jeep Gladiator. It makes sense for me as it is that mid sized truck that has a lot of bells and whistles yet fits in a parking garage. Yes it's long but it will fit in most garage spots easily unlike my Raptor with its wider footprint.

So What I like about the JT. Besides it's bite size capability after the Raptor.

The ride is pretty cush. Not Raptor quality but I don't think any other truck in the world has that suspension cush.

The ability to pop the front top like a split targa top. That is really nice and I tested it out and it was surprisingly quiet. The ability to pull the whole roof and take 4 other peeps with me is a possibility as well. COOL!

The tech is better than my Ford. Voice activation is almost BMW easy.

What I will miss of the Raptor - That sport like ride from such a big truck. It really hauls the mail and that suspension keeps everything in shape quite well. I will miss its LARGE interior. That back seat folded up was like a perfect changing room. It's YUGE!!!

So yes I traded it in and got a really great deal on the trade and 1000 off the invoice of the Jeep. It's dropping my monthly by 1/3 as well.

So this just happened..,.. 2020 Jeep Gladiator Launch Edition

Interesting change! I can see what you are saying about the size in the city, I can imagine it would be a huge pain, the raptor is a big bitch!

Congrats on the new ride! Plans for it?

    Plans???

Short term plans is to take all the stuff off and go for a ride with it. No doors or roof and drive it around while we have a dry stretch. Moving blankets in the garage to keep the parts from getting damaged and maybe a bimini style cover with emergency tarp for beat down rain.

Long term, I would like to do a lift kit, 37"s and some scrape hields at some point and really take it off road. My plan is to do a setup for an overland vacation with my toy hauler next year and drive across the country while hitting some famous off road destinations.

A Raptor will not fit in a parking garage, but a lifted long Jeep with 37's will??

The issue with the Raptor was width in garages more than height. The 6'8" height was not too bad but the 6 inch extra width over a normal F150 was a problem. The 6'3" stock height of the JT does give it room for mod's. But yes you do have a point. It could limit the fit anywhere I'm looking for.

I never modded the thing one bit. So nothing to take off. If I'm honest I really never fell in love with the Raptor and always thought it was over hyped. I see myself doing more with the Jeep.

You will have very little problems, length maybe just a bit but likely not. I had a JK on 37x12.50's when I lived in Somerville, even lifted its extremely easy to maneuver, Wranglers have a ridiculous turning radius. Even with an increased offset wheel and wider tires you can still land it in the same spot as most Mini Coopers.

When you get serious about building it, let me know if you want some help with components. I've done a few Jeeps.

....and to Smutty's point, they do look pretty awful in stock trim. That said, with a mild lift and big shoes it changes everything. In a couple of years I fully intend on trading my Ram in and getting a soft top Sport to build for my daily driver/mild wheeler. They only two options I want are the tonneau cover and spray in bedliner.

The length is still about 2 feet shorter than an F150 Raptor. The turning radius of the Raptor was one of the weakest points. The JT even with its wheelbase turns a tighter circle. LB, I'll hit you up when I think about mods.

Well theres your problem, fucking thing sucks stock.

A tune makes a HUGE difference.

The 10 speed shift schedule + all the nannies up your ass hold the stock truck back SO bad. 10th gear at 39 mph isnt awe inspiring.

    Either way, too late now.

Sounds like the jeep might be a money pit!

The Raptor stock doesn't know what the hell it's doing half the time. True it needs a tune.

At first sign the Jeep is a money pit it will be gone. I have no time for that.

I barely fit through my garage door with it. 9' doors (108"), 96.8" wide at the mirrors, 86.3 stock at the tires, Im closer to 90" now, that leaves me 5.6" gap for each mirror if Im dead center, 9" each side at the tires!

I actually did clip the garage once with a tire, but luckily they poke enough that I didnt touch the fenders and just left a little bit of a NASCAR rub on the white tin work.

Edit: fun fact, the raptor amber lights are just for looks, they are DOT required due to the width.

I meant money pit for mods, not repairs. The jeep accessory catalog comes in volumes.

I guess I was thinking about height. My JK 2-door with a 2" lift and 35's felt like I was going to scrape the hanging entrance barrier the few times I took it into a parking garage. Granted that was one up in Burlington VT and one in Boston, so not a large sample size by any means.

Maneuverability was not an issue in that rig, it turned on a dime and was super easy to park nearly anywhere. I know the JKU/JLU and Gladiator are quite a bit longer and slightly more difficult to maneuver in tight spaces, however.

My JLU might have a tighter turning radius than my wife's Versa Note... the amount of wheel angle they allow out of the crate is crazy.

Maybe I missed it, but will a jeep tow a toy hauler? I didn't think the tow capacity on the gladiator was that high?

Depending on trim / setup it's rated for 7500lbs.

Yeah. That seems low to me. Most half tons will tow 10.5k. A toy hauler has got to be close in weight to that.

I would think it would struggle pulling it if it had a couple bikes or any of the tanks had water in them.

It's not designed to compete against half-tons, it's a midsize taking on Ridgelines, Rangers, Tacomas, etc.

Plus ducatirdr's toy hauler is a VRV aluminum so lighter than most toy haulers I would think

That was exactly my point. He's comparing a f150 to it and has to pull a trailer.

I would love a jeep again and actually think these are cool looking. That was the first thing I looked at was the tow rating though knowing I has to pull a trailer.
