    kegs, tires and heavy stuff

My post count is too low to make a thread in the classifieds but I am looking for some stuff you might want to get rid of. I don't visit this particular forum that often but I'm posting here because it's local.

Basically what I am doing is trying to get some equipment together for strongman style excersises. Unfortunately, I will never compete in the real thing but I heard it's a great workout and I want to add something else in to my routine.

I am looking for kegs. I know you guys like your beer so somebody must have an empty keg they might want to get rid of. It's a long shot but I figured I would try. I'm actually looking for 4-5 of them but if you got just one, I think I will take it.

I also would be interested in big tractor tires as well as heavy rocks. If you have other suggestions and need to get rid of some stuff, I might be interested in stopping by and taking a look. But no, I am not interested in your fat wife, sister, or anything like that. Sorry.

Sorry I don't really have anything that you are looking for, I just thought this post was funny.

I do have lots of old truck tires but nothing big like for a tractor. Maybe you could screw a bunch of tires together.

this isnt something that your going to think people need everyday, huh?
my buddy has a few kegs at his place in Lowell. I'll check with him and let you know.
you might want to check with local breweries and see what they do with kegs that arent "up to code" or dont pass inspection

Be prepared to shell out some cake, even for damaged kegs. They are going for about $75 each for the scrap.

Re: kegs, tires and heavy stuff

    hey bmull,

I do strongman stuff as well. your best bet for tires depending on how big you want them would be a place that sells tires for agricultural commercial applications. We picked up three earlier this year at school from 600-900 lbs and they even delivered them for me. they have to pay to scrap them so they are more then happy to give them to you.

As far as kegs. Youll have a tough time finding those. All the major beer companies such as BUD take back ALL their kegs even damaged ones. You wont have any luck at liquor stores or distributors as they all send them back to the brewer.

Im sure your on a budget as most of us are but elitefts.com has alot of great strength equipment that will help your events. Our team here at school (rochester institute of tech) will probably be hosting a meet this summer. might be something to start training for. let me know if you have any more questions. good luck with the training

Kegs are like 20 bucks for a deposit.
    Buy a keg
    Drink the beer
Get drunk and start throwing the empty barrel around

I'm sorry I find this a bit funny. How much you weigh? 110?115?

Kegs are costing about $110/ea new right now. The scrap value has been worth more than the deposit for years! That is starting to change as we charge a more appropriate deposit, although the bars and distributors are fighting us a bit. But that's another story. I'll check to see if I have a keg or two if you want to buy it at scrap value.

If you don't mind me asking what are your plans for them?

if you have some could you let me know too? ive been looking for awhile.

as for how most set them up, alot of people cut a hole in the top, and fill it with sand or a sand/water mix depending on how much they want them to weight. then just weld em back up.

I thought I replied here last night but I guess I forgot to send it. But anyway, let me know how many you can get and what the scrap value is of each keg.

    Catch-

Do you know the dimensions of the tires you have? I don't want to get a tire that I won't be able to use. And I don't know if I can figure out what size I should get by how much I deadlift.

I'm gonna get some stuff welded up which will include a yolk, farmer's walk implements, a sled and some platforms for the poor man's Atlas stone. I did check out elitefts.com a while back and there is no way I am spending that kind of money. As long as it gets the job done, I'll be happy.

Any ideas on a harness? I was thinking about just making one out of rope but I don't know how uncomfortable that will be.

I'm sorry to say I don't know the Joel you speak of. I spend to much time on another board we have in common and don't know many local guys.

What about a rock climbing harness or something like that....maybe even a window washer's harness??

If not, make one out of seat belts....local salvage yard should be able to provide lengths...you just have to be handy with the sewing machine and some nylon thread.

bmull - The tires we use vary in size depending on the manufacturer. The tire i actually have at my house stands about 5'6 and is about 2ft wide give or take. I only use t

    edit::
wtf happend to my post. ah well im not typing this shit again. basically when you go get a tire, flip it there to see if its what you need. some of our tires are big but are light due to the fact they arnt as thick etc etc. we have one for speed and a couple for brute pounds. just flip them there and pick the ones you need.

as far as harnesses go, just buy one, we have tried so many home made ones and they all suck. they pinch, pull, aka they just suck ass. save money by making the sled yourself but buy a harness, youll be much happier training with it. got any local meets your eyeballing?

Your original post was sent in my email notification so I did see what you wrote before. I'll start looking at the inzer harness when I get my stuff together.

I don't have any plans to compete but wouldn't turn down a chance if I thought I could do well. I just love to lift and figured a change in routine would get me through some platues (sp?).

    alright cool.

Strongman stuff is great for aiding your big three powerlifts. that and they are fun. the tire flip, keg carry, and the farmers walks would be the most effective ones you could do to help break your plateaus. If you havnt already checked out t-nation.com that is a great site for info from alot of the top guys in the sport. the forum gets irritating with all the "experts" posting in there so i just stick to the articals on the main page. are you making atlas stones?

I have nipples Greg...can you milk me??

If I were you dude I'd look into midget tossing. It might be cheaper than the kegs and it would also be extremely entertaining.

PS - If you get to tossin' midgets make sure you take pics for us NESRians.
