    Laptop advice needed (for kids)

I know there are plenty of people here who work in the computer industry, so I'm looking for some collective knowledge.

My 12 year old needs a laptop for school now. I want something decent for him, but realize he will want something new in 2 or 3 years. Are Dell and HP still the go-to brands? What about the ones that turn into tablets. Worth it? Any black Friday deals people know of? Must have a 15" screen at least I think. Budget around $300-$400 tops.

Because he is getting one, I'll be getting one for my 9 year old daughter also. Obviously just to start familiarizing her more with Windows etc. Budget about $200. Again, looking for recommendations.

    Thanks!

Chromebooks are the way to go for kids these days.

Cheap, typically fairly tough, far less concern of viruses/malware, great battery life. Can do the vast majority of what kids will use it for as far as school work.

Hang on a second. Isn't this NESR? Shouldn't somebody be trying to talk you into building your own Pentium 4 Linux machine out of old bubble jet printer parts?

Haha, jet printer parts I literally have by the truckload. I'm in an amazon print facility.

Re: Laptop advice needed (for kids)

Careful spending too little. My wife has been through three chromebooks recently. She didn't want one with a touchscreen or "convertible" to a tablet, that drove her down to the cheaper ones. One got returned first weekend as it was slow as dogshit. Next one was usable, but something was wrong with the wifi radio and it would sometimes just refuse to wifi ever. A few restarts later and it would sometimes work. Usually wifi did not work when you needed it most. No built in ethernet. So it was a paperweight when not connected. Google said I could take it apart and try to re-seat the wifi radio. Thus far I've found other things to do than screw with it. Wife finally gave up and bought yet another one.

She finally bought one that has a touchscreen and seems reliable AND usable.

I wish I had paid attention to the brands & models.

In my opinion she's almost poured refirb macbook money into these chromebooks.

And she still steals my macbook frequently for various reasons. The macbook works with our printer reliably. The chromebooks notsomuch.

Overall I am unimpressed. You see them in schools everywhere. I wonder if there is some sort of secret list of models that don't suck?!

my wife is a teacher and uses chromebooks all the time...i hate them cause it's a glorified web browser...it did come in handy to watch the preseason pats games through the tv with the hdmi port...on the other hand they are cheap and just about throw away...i like having windows, ms office and ports to plug stuff into but that's me...kids are probably biased more towards having everything on the cloud which is how i think a lot of schools do computer work which in that case a chromebook would be a good choice...like was said buy a decent one
