    LASIK Rules

So had LASIK done a couple weeks ago and they corrected my eyes to better than 20/20. Can't believe I waited so long to have it done.

How was it. I assume they gave you some kind of relaxation aid? I saw the How It's Made show on it and it was pretty crazy. I don't know if I could sit through one eye let alone two.

What was it like? Any pain? Preparation? What makes you a qualified candidate?

(Can you tell I am considering this in the financially stable future?)

    Re: LASIK Rules

Yeah they gave me drops to use an hour before I showed up to help numb my eyes. and when I got there they gave me a big Valium. So about 20 minutes after taking it I didn't have a care in the world. The worst part of the whole process was the suction rings they put on your eyes to keep them from moving. Had the blade less lasik done which uses a laser to make the flap. and then you just kind of watch them lift the cornea and then an orange light ( wash rinse repeat for the other eye ). 15 minutes later they ask you to read the time on the clock across the room..

I can't help but think of the Simpsons episode where Homer gets the eye surgery and doesn't use the eye drops and his eyes crust over...

Well since your pretty high it wasn't bad.. No real pain.. Really helps if you go home right afterwards and sleep for like a day. You'll put drops in afterwards that will sting a little and you'll feel like you have dust in your eyes for like a day.. As for Prep.. Drops an hour before.. and no contacts for like 3 weeks before. And to be a candidate you go in and they measure the thickness of your corneas. But the blade less one will let them preform it on thinner corneas than the one with the blade. But the blade less one is a bit more expensive.. It cost me about 4700 bucks for both eyes.. But since I have better than 20/20 vision right now I can't complain. Had it done at TLC laser center..

I so want to get this done, too but I have such a fear of it. I'll re-read this post a few times to see if it settles in a bit...

My wife had Lasik done @ TLC as well. She loves it. She had thin corneas and horrible vision too...no problemo.

Insurance didn't but they took a 100 off each eye at TLC if you have VSP as your insurance.. I did the flex spending account through work..

I haven't noticed any bad halo's or star bursts at night.. I was a little light sensitivity for about a week and a half right after.. and even now if some yahoo is driving at me with high intensity high beams on at me it makes me squint a little.. but otherwise not bad at all.

My Halos went away after about a year. I still have a lil light sensitivity but I can wear cool sunglasses now!

    Re: LASIK Rules

yeah do some research.. But a lot of them say what you do right after the surgery is the most important thing. They really want you to just go home and sleep.. put your drops in and sleep some more.. I was able to drive myself to the doc the next day for my appointment.

What was the cost difference there and how long did you go up for?

I had it done about 3 years ago...the prices may have changed substantially now that the US Dollar is in the shitter; the prices I paid are in USD.

They had two different levels depending on what I wanted to spend. I went with the "custom" machine that was a little more money but had a very high percentage of 20/15 or better results. I paid $1200 an eye...I could've got the lower priced procedure for $800 an eye. My local doctor did my pre and post op, and I paid about $300 for that.

I stayed 1 night in Montreal. I drove up, had the procedure, stayed at a hotel, went for a post-op check (20/15) in the morning, then drove home. The total price (just under $3000) with the room and cost of driving up there wasn't a whole lot cheaper, but I would've gone up there even it was more money. They have a great track record.

    Re: LASIK Rules

I've had to wear contacts/glasses all my life pretty much. I've thought about getting it done but what they do to fix your vision freaks the crap out of me.

If for some weird reason it doesn't go right, my vision is fuk'd for life.

Canada is light years ahead of the FDA! Brent (oreo N2) had his done (but I cannot find his Dr. anywhere, found the company) for cheap, like $300/eye. I have the companies website book-marked on my home system. They have a good track record as well.

Someday I will have it done

Dude, Im with you. I have really good vision with my contacts. I dont want to get worse vision. I had always said the contacts were not that bad to wear. Now, Im getting pretty sick of them. Also the success rate is really good now they have been doing these procedures for a long time. Im still afraid.

EVERY SINGLE person I have ever spoken to about laser eye surgery has said they love it. Im still afraid.
