AH-HA! I knew it!!! You had a bad experience. Well I don't blame you then for your skepticism. It's really a bunch of factors that will determine how your lawn comes in...quality/ depth of soil, proper compaction, application of the correct fertilizer and lime, application of the correct seed considering sun exposure, mulching of the seeded area and and finally the actual method of installation. If you just throw seed down on bare dirt in oct you won't do yourself any favors.

I'm having a lawn hydro-seeded tomorrow and one on saturday. While neither one will be really usable this year, this coming spring they'll be all set and will come in fine.

Well here's what I have done so far. I mowed and aerated the lawn, then I overseeded with bluegrass, folllowed by a round of pelletized lime. This weekend I am going to go over the whole lawn with a winterizer fertilizer. I will let you know how it comes up in the spring.
As for the fall vs spring ? I have always been told by landscapers, and excavators that you can seed in the spring, and the seed will lie dormant until fall. But you really need to wait until it is cold enough. If the seed the seed starts to germinate in the fall then you end up in the situation that todd had. I personally have a lawn that will be wet in the spring and I won't want to be walking around on it pushing a seeder.
