    Places to live down south

Toying around with the idea of moving down south in 5-10 years, or sooner if the right job comes along.

    Thinking North Carolina/South Carolina.

Would prefer a smaller town nearby a well resourced larger town. Ability to go to a nice downtown area with shops, food places and culture is good. Want to avoid traffic if possible.

Being in the industry I am, a college town or place with some private schools would be ideal. Would prefer to be near some type of water, be it a nice large lake, river or even the ocean.

That being said, what sort of areas have any of you been to that might fit my wants?

I'd like to avoid suburbia (massive subdivisions of little houses made of ticky tacky) and places like Atlanta.

I don't have much experience with a lot of the south, carolinas included but the area east of nashville by about 40 minutes is great. Depends on how far outside of a major city you want to be. For schools you've got MTSU about a half hour south of nashville and vanderbilt right there. I lived about pissing distance from MTSU right in college hell / suburbia which sucked but once you got away a bit it was awesome.

Maybe too south for you, but look at Austin. Depending on the commute, you can get some nice land enough away from town.

Oh wait, our population is exploding. Ignore Austin.

My parents live(d) in SC for the past 6 years, moving to Alabama, again.

I'd look into Charlotte (kind of the new Atlanta though), Raleigh, Wilmington is a beautiful town, Charleston (southern most north city). I'd say try to stay in SC over NC as the taxes are much cheaper. NC has state tax, county tax, local tax, cross the street tax, etc. IF you want to venture outside the Carolinas, Birmingham is a great city. All of these cities have surrounding towns that pretty much resemble Mayberry.

Re: Places to live down south

I lived in Rockingham, NC for about 15 years so I can probably help out a bit here. First off, Rockingham and everything around it is a depressed and uncultured shit hole, so don't move there. Both North and South Carolina have very wide coastal plains, stretching over 100 miles inland in some places. That translates to an extremely flat landscape which is prone to flooding and results in piss poor motorcycling roads. If you want to live near the beach then it's really hard to beat the Wilmington area. We used to vacation on Topsail Island and it's a pretty kick ass community 30 minutes north of Wilmington.

Coastal plains end at the Sandhills, anything immediately west of it is the Piedmont which is my favorite region of the state. You immediately get into rolling hills, endless twisty back roads, and the best BBQ in the world. Raleigh/Durham is a nice place to live, my Mom is there so I spend a decent amount of time there. Great music scene, great food, substantial enough airport to not be an obstacle, traffic can be a bit tough, plenty of universities there to find employment. I like the greater Greensboro area a lot; getting a bit closer to the mountains, about an hour to either Raleigh or Charlotte, not far up to WV for winter skiing, there are a few universities as well (UNCG, NC A&T.) There is good water close by both areas.

The community college system is (was?) very well developed in NC, basically every county has a local CC. That could be a place to start looking for work, it would let you be more rural if you chose. I'm not a big fan of the greater Charlotte area but there is good paying work there. The area around Clemson, SC (Seneca) is absolutely gorgeous. Obviously Asheville great. Boone is very nice. I have heard very good things about Greenville, SC recently but I haven't been. Supposedly a very cool downtown area with shops, good food, and nice green space.

The industrial triangle in NC consists of Durham Raleigh and Cary. I heard that Cary is called as Concentrated Area of Relocated Yankees.

Man, so many newer houses are stacked on top of each other in a lot of these areas. And the pricing is as high as it is up here.

Yes, in certain areas housing can be very expensive for "south". Charlotte has gotten pretty out of control. The lake outside of Charlotte, can't remember the name, is NASCAR central where many drivers and NASCAR people live, very expensive. Asheville I find to be very expensive for where it is, not sure why. It is a beautiful place to live though. My sister had a place in Wilmington a few years back, I really liked that town. I've traveled in through Greenville a number of times, it is nice, but it comes across to me as a spot you would fall in love with then get really bored with quickly. Kind of like marrying a stripper.

If this is something you are going to do, you probably want to take multiple trips down and check places out. There are a lot of nice places down south. Have you thought about Virginia? That's a great state as well, also TN has a lot to offer. Good luck, I envy that move. I'd love to go back south.

Oh, and unless you move to Asheville, you probably want to reconsider keeping the Miata...

I've gone to the Raleigh area a lot for work. It's fairly diverse. Still don't expect the same kind of diversity that you see up here.

I frequently go to Research Triangle Park for work, which is basically Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill. Almost all of my experience has been in & around Raleigh.

Frankly, I love it there & would move tomorrow if I could. Way less traffic, plenty of jobs in my industry, lower cost of living, infinitely better weather etc. I'm sure Pinned could comment more but the biggest downsides that may affect you are a shitty public school system a, uhh, "conservative" state legislature.

I've only been to Ashville once but I loved it. Not sure of career opportunities in that neck of the woods, though.

South Carolina tried to secede, so fuck those guys.

As far as technology jobs go, I'm kind of in an odd spot. I'm a specialist in not specializing. I handle all the networking, security, servers, switching, routing, firewalls, WiFi, databases, applications, infrastructure etc for a decent sized campus (40+ buildings linked via fiber, 145 acres, 700 or so users, 1k+ devices).

I wear all the hats. If I could find a company around Raleigh/Durham that would need someone like me, I'd love to hear them out. I think that area is ideal for what I'm looking for.

Asheville is nice, but it's way out there. I've been there, or driven through, a bunch.

Research triangle is ok. lots of colleges etc. But it is still on the coastal plain. flat and kinda featureless. I lived in Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill. I still have friends there. I wouldn't move back. Wilmington has some interest for me, as does Asheville. The south is a strange animal for a damn yankee.

Oh, yeah. Cary stands for Containment Area for Retired Yankees. And it's not meant in a laughing with you kinda way. lol
