i'd be careful dealing with these guys (Dusty Old Cars), they seem to have some shady business practices. i've frequented their listings for a year or two and reviews on the web are pretty shitty.

Re: Looking for help/advice on 60's-70's car

There are cars out there that can fit the bill... as others have already said, parts are plentiful for the cars from the 60-70's. So many of them shares parts among different makes/models and the muscle cars never went out of style. Tons of after market performance parts to make them very driveable.

It sounds like you already have your mind set on what to look for and you've done your homework.

Try to find something that a reputable shop has done the work on or at least someone who has thought about a maintainable car. Mis-matched parts and no documentation will make a restomod hard to maintain if you're not the doing the wrenching and not willing to make further "design" mods.

Find something with an upgraded suspension and brakes and you'll be comfortable cruising any highway or canyon. If you're running a big land yacht and old brakes and suspension, then it can get more than a little interesting.

My personal favorite would be an old GTO.

Let us know how this one ends, fun story.

As others have said, you're on the right path for what you want and you're doing a good job paying attention to brakes/suspension, etc.

Please don't forget rust. Cancer up here. Lots of cars guys sink all the things you want into their project only to realize frame/quarters and floorplans are cancer later. Then they sell middle of the road cheap which is right where you're shopping.

Keep an eye on these guys. I purchased my Harley through them and they're a great group of dudes and always have a few classic cars in their inventory.

That thing, for $5k looks like a steaming pile of hot garbage. You can get a VERY clean 944 for not much more

For $5k, there's this 78 Porsche on CL. Dump the remaining $15k of your budget into it and end up with everything you're asking for and more.

I know of some folks that have bought/consigned classics there. Their experiences ranged from disappointment to full blown litigation.

Spend exactly double that and you can get 556hp, supercharger, 6spd, recaro seats, magnetic suspension in a 2012 package.

The math works out, that's more than double the mustang and it appreciates in value.

Would love one of these as well....I get 3 different Mustang magazines each month delivered to the house. Love the old and new stangs, pretty much anything customized, I dig it.

Lately, Ive been drooling over a 65-66 restomod....

Re: Looking for help/advice on 60's-70's car

So...I test drove a couple cars today...

First was a 71 Valiant Pro Touring car with a 5.7L Hemi, Tremac 5spd, 4 wheel discs, alterkation front suspension, etc...Handled really well, steering was nice and tight!! Overdrive was nice and made for a smooth ride. Launched without wheel spin when you smashed the gas. I think it was deceivingly fast, because it didn't necessarily feel like a rocket, but I found myself exceeding the speed limit quickly. The body and paint was really nice and had a folder full of documentation. Was a 22k original mile car, with over 200 pictures of the build. I think this car would be fun on a twisty mountain road.

Let downs for me, the exhaust note, it was pretty quiet and nothing is going to make it sound like a big block. Had a bench seat, which I didn't love, but could get over. The hood fit was iffy, i'm guessing because it was a fiberglass aftermarket hood. It stalled every time you took it out of 5th coming to a stop, downshifting from 5th to 4th was fine. The stalling was kind of a deal breaker for me. He thinks its an air/fuel ratio issue.

Next was a 68 Chevelle, 396BB, 4spd, disc brakes in the front, drums in the rear, manual brakes, power steering. The car sounded amazing. It rode nice, and wasn't geared really low as it cruised nicely at 70, and wasn't overly loud. Had a really nice interior! Smash the gas on this one and the tires liked to break loose. Relatively stock suspension but drove down the road straight, and braked straight.

Let downs for me was the paint was kind of bland. It rattled a lot on the inside. The drivers side window came off track when we got out.

I liked both cars, but I want to love whatever car we land on, it's still a big investment for me. I loved my bikes when I bought them. I loved my truck when I bought it. And I still love all my vehicles. If I love my other vehicles more than the one I'm looking at and just finished a test drive, it may not be the one...Have a couple other cars I hope to look at next week...

i think what you are prob looking for is a retro mod..
    im a GM guy..
id recommend a cookie cutter chevelle.. endless parts.. wicked easy to work on.. cheap if its just a standard chevelle.. no SS.
youd want a retro mod so u can just drive it...
something that has brakes in front converted to disk... the front steering converted to rack although the factory stuff is ok as long as its tight.
    watch out for rust..
thats basically it.. retro especially if you can find a motor that is fuel injected as well.

Mustangs didn't gain magneride until 2015, and that was only on the GT350. The Recaro seats are painful for any drive over 30 minutes. They were truly designed for the track.

I was going to recommend the Plymouth GTX, but looked them up and they appear to be out of your price range, clean examples run $40k+ with the base 440, and with the optional 426 are over $100k

a college buddy had one with a 426 back in the day(his dad owned a Plymouth dealership) and to this day, is the fastest ride I have ever had in a motor vehicle, nearing 3 miles in a minute on the Adirondack Northway
