    Unhappy Losing a best friend

Just wanted to vent a little bit. My dog was diagnosed with a degenerative spinal disease. Can't really slow it, can't reverse it, it is destroying his spine. He's already lost use of one back leg, and the other is starting to degrade now too. It won't be long until he's paralyzed and then becomes incontinent. Before that point I'm afraid we'll have to say good bye. This really sucks. He's such a good dog, best dog I've had. And he's completely with it mentally and, except for this, physically. He's 10yo and his x-rays showed the hips and joints of a 3yo dog. Most agile dog I've seen, and fast. Ironic the one thing he's always been incredible at is the thing he's losing. He's been my buddy and the an incredible family addition for the past 10 years, gets me up in the morning for his long walks, sleeps at my feet, always beside me in the yard.
Sorry I'm rambling, this is really hard news to swallow. I guess he has a few more months, going to get him outside as much as possible and let the sun shine on that old dog's ass. I'm not writing this for sympathy notes, please don't even respond, I just needed to get this off my chest.

Sorry to hear, brutal, and a wicked good looking dog. Time to treat that dog like a king, nothing but frosty paws and turkey sausage to eat!

    Re: Losing a best friend

I've lost half a dozen dogs over the years to everything from bizarre accidents to cancer, cardiac arrest and just plain old age.

It doesn't get easier. Ever. But I wouldn't change a thing. I always have two dogs in my life and every minute is a blessing.

Just remember.... they're waiting for you. When you see them again, the reunion will be EPIC.

    Re: Losing a best friend

I had a Lab adopted at 8-1/2 months. He came to work with me every day. At age 12 we noticed a lump in his mouth. Brought him to the vet on a Saturday morning and she advised it was oral cancer, very aggressive, not really treatable and he would have to be put down. I took him for a long walk, then brought him back to be put down. It was incredibly sad. Even worse my wife’s dog had been put down 8 days earlier due to hip problems.

Dogs never live long enough. Hope you get through it.

    Thanks all.
We adopted him at 9mo old or so. He came from a kill shelter in KY, but a couple days away from the worst. I can't begin to explain how an awesome dog he is. Even now in this condition all he wants to do is please us.
He is getting spoiled right now, no doubt.

Degenerative myelopathy? My 9y/o newfie is dealing with this right now. While he hasn't completely lost the use of his hind legs, they are very, very weak (stumbles/falls/hard to get up). The disease is starting to progress to one of his front legs now. No cure, but they suggest exercise might help delay the advancement (which we've done). He's been dealing with it for almost 2 years now, but I know what's coming in the not all too distant future. Even though life's pretty hectic, I try everyday to make sure we enjoy each otherís company and let him know he's very special. I well imagine you're doing the same. I know you don't want sympathy ... but I also know what you and your pup are going through. It sucks big time, and I'm sorry to hear someone else has to go through the same thing too. I wish you both the best.

Well, he made it almost a year since I started this thread. We said our final good bye on Friday afternoon. My wife, my son, and I were all present to hold him and see him to the beyond. Good bye old friend.

Sorry for your loss. My dog passed on 3/16 and I’m still super bummed devestated (but I went from thinking he was fine to him being put down due to cancer over the span of six hours)

    Re: Losing a best friend

That sucks. I have three older (12ish) labs and a few weeks ago my yellow lab stopped eating and was acting very lethargic. We brought him to the vet and a chest x-ray showed he was riddled with cancer. We agreed to have him put down and he ended up passing on before they could administer the drugs.

The hardest part was how devastated my 10 year old was.

    Re: Losing a best friend

I had a 12 yo Chocolate Lab adopted at 8 months. Got him when I’d just started my business and he came to work every day. My wife remembers meeting him before me.... She had a 12yo Shepherd and they became buddies instantly.

Her dog developed hip displasia so bad he couldn’t get up the stairs. By agreement, we had him put down while she was away visiting her brother.

8 days later we noticed blood in my dog’s water bowl and took him to the vet on a Saturday morning. The vet examined him and explained that it was an oral cancer, that such growths were typically very aggressive, and that operating to remove it was seldom successful.

I asked what she suggested and she said because we couldn’t easily monitor pain it would be best to put him down. I took him for a slow walk around Moakley Park, a mile and a half. Think I cried most of the way as he’d been with me through so many events, from starting the company to getting engaged, married, and having our first child. I sat with him while they gave him the injection, and they left me alone with him. It was a very, very sad day. And a sad memory.

Dogs never live long enough. But when you are ready, there’s another dog that needs you.

    Re: Losing a best friend

Condolences to you both. They are truly a part of the family.

Feeling gutted myself. Just lost a close family member two weeks ago, and five days later had to say goodbye to my cat of 17 years. I'm done with this month - please bring on May and sunshine.

Sorry for your loss. Sounds like a great dog and he received as much love as he dished out. Just focus on the great memories you have with him and that he knew that he was loved by your entire family.

    Re: Losing a best friend

Seems like it is going around with all the responses. I'm sorry for you guys too that posted losses. This was the second dog we had to make the decision for. It sucks and hurts, but that pain is fully eclipsed by the years of companionship they provide. He won't be the last, but can't fathom getting another too soon.
    Again, thanks all.

Glad you had another trip around the sun with your pup. Our lost her vision this year and it made me realize that she won't be here forever and that pisses me off. Never before in my life have I become this attached to a pet. I feel bad for you having to say goodbye.
