    Masks

Starting a new thread on this rather than burying it in the Covid-19 thread. If you have any face masks in your shop, healthcare and first responders can use them. My neighbor is a surgeon at Tufts, and they're reusing masks because they're running out. Doesn't matter how many or how few you have, if you can spare them give 'em up!

I've been told by my bro in law masks only help to prevent you from touching your mouth and nose, told me to use a shemagh and call it good.

    Re: Masks

from what i understand, it depends on the level of mask. I happened to have N95 for some reason, and these are more effective/needed. Anything is better than reusing old ones.

Where do I go with them? We could donate 6.

    Edit:

Per @marty_walsh: "Our medical professionals need our help now. They need supplies. Protective equipment like masks and respirators. I’m appealing to construction companies that do asbestos abatement and general demolition. You have the equipment they need. To donate, call 311."

    Re: Masks

From what I understand, masks are more helpful in keeping citizens from transferring the virus and not as effective at keeping them from getting the virus. I'd say if you have no symptoms for a few days than donate MOST of them but keep a few for yourself.

We had five we gave to a nurse. She only had a couple of her own: the hospital was very short.

The concern is that many Chinese N95 masks have been rejected as substandard in Europe.

    https://www.ft.com/content/09e13687-...0-355959449c71

Chinese makers of face masks are taking advantage of loopholes in EU and US regulatory processes to speed up the manufacture and sale of the equipment, as they race to meet an explosion in overseas demand to combat the global spread of coronavirus.

The revelations will add to concerns about the quality of Chinese-made equipment after authorities in Spain, the Netherlands and Turkey all rejected masks and tests as substandard in recent days.

The tactics used by Chinese manufacturers, which account for half of global output of surgical masks, have included tweaking product descriptions and speeding up testing procedures.

Coworker also mentioned substandard masks as well. Can we line them with a dirtbike foam air filter or K&N gauze?

Just make sure to oil them first.

We bought the highest-value HVAC filter at HD and pulled the filter material out. It was for a 3D printed respirator but I suppose you could just strap it on your face.

    Re: Masks

Just for information sake, N95 means that the filter will stop 95% of particles at the 0.3 micron size. You can do this with a MERV-16 filter (Min Eff Rating Value). This isn't considered HEPA (High efficiency particulate air) filter. Step up to the MERV17 and you go from 95% to 99.97% efficiency at the 0.3 micron size, that starts HEPA and ULPA rating. There can be a large difference in cost between a MERV16 and a MERV17 filter. We do a lot with food industry and most run between a MERV12 and MERV16 depending where in the process the filtration is.

Going any further with filtration on a mask than MERV16 is probably a bit overkill. The masks most likely do not make enough of a seal to the face to even take advantage of the 16 rating. It's not the mask that gets the rating, it is the material. You would be better off with a lower rated material and better fitting mask. The virus doesn't move on it's own, it's usually attached to a bit of moisture to transport it. That moisture will be much larger than 0.3 microns. But then there's the problem of pulling the virus through the mask with standard breathing, but I'm not sure that will easily happen.

While not 100% safe, the hospitals should be investing in UV-C lighting throughout infected areas to help destroy the virus while air borne or once landed on a surface. It's actually a pretty good way to passively keep things detox'd.

Also, a tip about touching your face -- a friend of mine just puts couple bandaids on his right index and middle fingers. Whenever he touches his face, he feels that and is reminded. He says this has helped him a lot to stop touching his face.
