Miatas.

    Re: Miatas.

I owned an NA Miata, '95 R Package car in fact. Best car I ever owned. Always put a smile on my face, every time I sat behind the wheel. Drove it for 5 years and sold it for nearly the same amount I paid for it. Great car. Fun to drive, even when not running at breakneck speed, between the wind/road noise, the feel of the road, and the closeness to the ground, it always felt faster than it was.

But, I was the only one who liked it. R package cars had Bilstiens on the corners that were stiff as a rock, and a manual steering rack, and the top leaked a little bit around the passenger window when it rained, the wife hated it.

What's the best (well, in a reasonable price range) mild turbo kit out there for NB's?

I want something that would make it a little more fun, but not ruin the relaxed character of the car.

Not sure how "relaxed" it is, but I took a ride in a supercharged Miata and it was awesome. No lag, felt really strong.

Also saw one with an aluminum V8, that looked like a factory install. They really are amazing cars, if you can think it, there's an aftermarket part out there.

    Re: Miatas.

Last I checked, Flyin' Miata's kits were the definitive choice for what you describe. IIRC you could piece together a kit for less. For example exhaust manifolds are (were) plentiful on fleabay. But I hear their kits were really well thought out, complete, and reliable.

Is this car a MY2000? The '99 and '00 cars came in two flavors; CA and everyone else. My car was a CA car and had this massive cast boat anchor for an exhaust manifold with different O2 layout and an extra cat. That made turbos more challenging; I would basically have to convert it to a Fed car and/or fake out an O2 sensor or something. Very lame.

I was thinking Flyin Voodoo II series. It's an '01.

Of course, this is all assuming I'll actually get it.

'01? Never mind then. You get variable valve timing and a reasonably light weight manifold. Good for you.

    Re: Miatas.

Still waiting for a price....they are dragging their feet.

Seen a few nice examples for sale locally, but none in the BRG with the SE package from '01, which IMO is the best looking Miata ever.

Clean 25k miles 2003 S2000 is for sale local to me, but it has that barf red interior which is a non-starter. Makes it look like an '80's Vette inside......no offense to those who like that look, but it's not something I could stomach.

When they were new and i was younger i thought those s2000 red interiors were cool, thats when FATF and what not was cool too, now barf. but those are awesome cars, rev like bikes and that transmission is one of the smoothest manuals you can have.

the S2000 is the way to go if you want that type of two seater small convertible. More expensive than a miata though.

I agree about the red interior.. heart breaking.

Mine had the tan interior.. which I actually liked a lot.

Arguable. The '91 SE in BRG isn't horrible to look at either. Had a friend that had (has?!) one he ran competitively at the regional level in SCCA autocross. He is one of those guys that takes a turd and makes it look like a million bucks with some armorall and a can of krylon. Unbelievable.

He had more subtle wheels for street use.

    Re: Miatas.

    And now the dilemma:

Keep holding out for the potentially cheaper but still no word on price '01 BRG SE that tickles my eye G-spot, or go with a MazdaSpeed NB with twice the mileage?

Looks like I'd be looking at about $5k to get the NA NB (HA!) up to 250hp or so, $3k to get the Mazdaspeed up there.....

    Re: Miatas.

If you plan on boosting it, I believe a naturally aspirated motor will handle aftermarket boost better than a Mazdaspeed Miata will handle more boost...if that makes sense.

But I have also read that the Mazdaspeed Miata is an absolute blast all by itself.

    Re: Miatas.

Actually, I've heard the opposite. The MSM is easier/cheaper to boost since it already has the shot peened tranny, the heavier clutch, strengthened rear axles, etc. Stock turbo with a downpipe/midpipe, intake, exhaust and new computer/injector is good for 250rwhp. Where as the naturally aspirated will need all those things, plus a turbo and new clutch to make the same HP.

    Re: Miatas.

I was really referring to the head and the amount of boost. From what I recall from Mazdaspeed Forums, the MSM will handle stock boost fine, but upping it dramatically increases pressure on an already weak head design, vs just adding only a bit of boost to an NA motor to get to the same level. You have a much higher chance of blowing a headgasket in an MSM with raised boost than you do in an NA motor with only 6psi or so.

That's only a vague recollection however. I might be entirely wrong.

    Re: Miatas.

I've never read that. From what I understand, the VVT head on the 01-05 NB's were identical. Could be wrong. The only internal motor difference that I was aware of was the lower compression dished pistons, 9.5:1 vs 10.1:1.

    Re: Miatas.

As I said I only recall that from a not too invested reading of a thread years ago on MSF. Actually it may have applied only to high horsepower builds, however.

One thing I do recall very clearly though - many people believe that the MSM is the way the Miata should have come from the factory, and nobody has ever regretted getting one over an NA Miata.

I believe that the MazdaSpeed Miata has the heads from the early NB ('99/'00) Miata, not the same as the VVT setup from the later NB cars. I thought they had the lower compression 9.5:1 pistons too.

As I recall, the early NB engines were regarded as being very FI friendly. (Presumably that's why Mazda used that engine for the MazdaSpeed.) Although I'm sure the VVT engines aren't much worse.

I've said it before; I don't know why you'd go for "BIG" power in that car. I was honestly very happy with the stock power plant. I'd be much happier bulldozing that money into suspension and handling bits instead. ... But then I am the kind of guy who rides a 650cc motorcycle. So.

It's the same argument as the Miata vs the 350/370z, S2000, Mustang, and every other higher HP car out there. What's your pleasure? Huge power? Or cheap thrills?!

I also remember folks griping about the 6MT being more stout than the 5-speed?!? That I really can't remember for sure.

    Re: Miatas.

You go big power in a Miata for the same reason someone builds a turbo'd bike...its a straight up hoon machine.

I wouldn't drop an LS1 into a Miata myself, but I can see the fun in it as both a project and for at least a couple weeks driving it.
