    Is there any other kind?

I'll do it again. Just will have a much more accurate expectation. Maybe I'll bring a grill and do up some food while I'm sitting around half the day.

R comps should last 9+ days on a Miata before really dropping off.
I will partially eat crow on this statement. Jeff and I ran his WRX at Loudon last weekend. Car had Hawk HP+ on the front (nothing special) and stock stuff on the rear.

The car did 16 sessions of 20-30 minutes. The fronts made it just fine. We put 3 sets of rear brakes on the car in the same time frame.

Lesson = upgraded aftermarket pads are worth it an make a significant difference.

Thanks to this thread I've got my eye on a 2001 Miata. Price is right, guy used it as a commuter and is being very upfront about everything. Only thing is that it has 150k on it. I've never bought anything over 100k. It'll just be a toy so I won't be crushed if it breaks down. Anything to look out for besides timing belt and maintenance or should I walk away?

Usual New England car stuff. Rust. Beat suspension. Yadda yadda.. Oh, wait, you're in California. Nevermind.

No, I would not worry about 150k on a Miata engine. '01 is either the first year with their variable valve timing or the last year without it, can't remember anymore. The VVT specs premium fuel and makes almost the same power as the pre VVT that does not.

Crate motors for the Miata are relatively cheap too if it ever comes to that.

    Re: Miatas.

I'm now running a full custom aftermarket ECU in my Miata.

I'm learning more about tuning and ECU/EFI systems than I ever thought I would.

Ended up returning the FiveO motorsports injectors (twice) because they didn't fit, then they wanted to send me over some of their own "Black Ops" injectors which weren't based on Bosch EV14's. Went with Flow Force injectors and have been happy with them.

Now I'm tuning. Basically I run a laptop on the passenger seat that is connected to the ECU via USB. I run Tunerstudio in VE Analyze Live mode and it looks at my fuel map, current AFR, AFR table, MAP, intake air temp coolant temp, barometer, RPM, etc and recalculates the fueling to hit the target AFR. It's pretty cool and interesting to watch and see the car learning to get it right. I wasn't using the AFR table at first, so it was just always trying to put my into the stoichiometric 14.7 AFR at all times. Ran good, but then I realized you should richen things up when in boost. So enabled using the AFR map table and had to start over.

Still only running about 9psi of boost. Once I get my tune settled in, I'm going to shoot for 12psi. It's already quicker and WAY better to drive than previously. No more big fuel hit at 4500rpm. It pulls smooth and strong all the way up. It feels slower because there isn't a big hit anymore, but it's quicker.

Haven't setup flat shift or launch control yet, I'll probably do that later on.

I'm still considering getting it to a professional tuner with a decent steady state dyno to really tweak things before I roll any more boost. Undecided on that.

Are you going to track it before you jump the boost?

Well, I understand your occasional need to haul spare parts to the track, but really, the Miata’s trunk is surprisingly big, and you can always buy a trailer,” says the obnoxious, often leathery Miata owner, as a pre-cancerous mole ever-so-slowly engulfs a small chunk of his forearm.

Normally, this would be the point at which I remind Obnoxious Miata Owner that jokes are like timing belts—they have finite mileage. Install them improperly or run them for too long, and they’ll pop. Land flat. Quit working.

But no! Too many Miata folks are dead-on serious whenever they’ve told me I should buy one of their stupid little turd-cars, despite the fact that this two-seat convertible is not what I want. They aren’t going to actually listen, and they tend to get really defensive when you point out that fixed roofs are neat, because Miata is their God.

At work we had a geekfest on whether or not you would get wet driving a Miata in the rain on the highway with the top down. This included a fluid flow analysis.

    CN: No.

    Re: Miatas.

    Depends on the rain.

Heavy stuff, nope, you gunna git wit. Leaning forward over the steering wheel will keep you dry, but your seat back will still get wet.

Light/moderate rain? Anything over 45mph or so, you are dry and stylin. Only drops I get are from when I have to kick the windshield wipers on and the runoff up and to the side of the windshield dribbles over the top of the door windows due to the air currents.

    Many horsepowers, that exhaust.

On the old I93 bridge deck in Boston there used to be a big expansion joint. Anytime I saw a stanced car I'd try to egg therm into a speed contest, just to watch the sparks fly!

    Re: Miatas.

"To Stance" is synonymous with "destroy", "ruin", "make terrible".

Went and test drove a '99 over the weekend for a friend who was in the market for one. MAN that thing was rough. Engine was strong, but everything else was just crap. Rust, torn top, sun faded everything, leaking fluids. It had a hard 6x,000 miles, that's for sure.
