High mileage oil - worth it or marketing scam?

Curious what peeps think on this.
I personally donít believe in special condition oils, I stick to change oil and filter often with whatever is recommended for your vehicle. But I find this interesting. Some claim it slows down/ends oil leaks and consumption, but i find that hard to believe.

My oil rep says it's all about the oil filter. If you have a 10k mile oil, you need a 10k mile oil filter, as well.

Re: High mileage oil - worth it or marketing scam?

Are you tallking about the high mileage oils with conditioners etc marketed towards cars with 75k plus or oils that advertise high oil change intervals?

I'm with same on the filter being the weakest link on an OCI. A cheap filter and quality oil still means you're limited by the filter. It's like putting a cheap commuting tire on a race bike. The bike is better than the tire and you're still limited by the tire. Run race rubber and you tap more of the bikes potential.

As far as high mileage oil for seals etc..... I think it's marketing. Using a high quality oil to begin with is the way to go. Just because the vehicle crossed an arbitrary number of miles doesn't mean it needs a different oil in my mind.

Oh, yeah maybe I misunderstood. I thought you meant higher oil change interval oils.

Not a fan of oils with additives for higher mileage vehicles. If you just change your oil regularly, you shouldn't need to do anything else. Regular maintenance trumps everything else.

If your engine is burning oil or knocking, etc, those additives only extend the inevitable engine failure that has already started by misuse.

Re: High mileage oil - worth it or marketing scam?

Seems like a good question for the YouTube channel called Project Farm.

Personally, I don't believe anything with regards to sales pitches involving oil.

Due to my penchant for driving all over the place 7 days a week, for the last few years I've been going 10k between oil changes and a filter every other oil change. I use the same Traveller oil from Tractor Supply and have noticed zero issues.....no additional consumption, change in fuel mileage, etc. I doubt a "high mileage" oil will change anything.

I was talking about the designated oil marketing. I just noted that I believe in frequent oil changes as best process.

I use OEM filters. Do you guys use/recommend something else?

Re: High mileage oil - worth it or marketing scam?

Do yourself a favor and open up an oil filter after 5000 miles of use and then another after 10000 miles of use on the same engine. Unless something failed catastrophically, there won't be any difference between the two filters. Oil filters are sized for break-in when there's a lot of metal in the oil and end of engine life when wear starts accelerating. For normal use, they are way oversized and rarely filter out any particles.

Re: High mileage oil - worth it or marketing scam?

I've heard the long life oil has different additives to maintain viscosity and other properties longer. The last oil change in my wife's car I used the 15k mile oil and plan to change it at 10k. I just changed the oil in my truck this weekend at 6k (regular Castrol synthetic) and it was still transparent, dark but not that black you typically get. I also did the obligatory transfer case and differentials on both vehicles this weekend as well, only the 90k mile rear differential showed dirty fluid. Everything else looked new dumping out and I was 15k over on my truck for those services.

New tundras include oil change in first couple years of warranty, don't they? Now they don't have to change it as much. Same reason the fuel light comes on with like 4-5 gallons left in the tank. Free roadside assistance.

I think it's weird the transmissions are "non-servicable".

Re: High mileage oil - worth it or marketing scam?

An oil engineer I used to know (passed away) said the best way to improve on a quality oil filter was to add a few rare earth magnets to the case. I've been doing that ever since on every engine with a removable filter. Does it work? Makes sense that it would but I haven't opened a filter to confirm.

Does the new Tundra spec 0W-20. If it does, that's most of it right there. 0W-20 would only be synthetic and more capable of handling the longer interval.

I have an oil analysis from my Camry done a little over 9K and it was still good to go for a lot longer. 10k is nothing for a modern high quality oil and engine.

We had an old Subaru with the well-known piston slap problem: quite loud on initial start. Castrol High Mileage nearly eliminated the noise. Only had 140,000 when we sold it so not sure if longevity was affected.

^ I'd bet that was more viscosity related than anything else.

    Who knows?

We tried a number of different brands/grades. The Castrol High Mileage worked like a charm.

Something like this before. We had two of them: one slapped, one did not. More annoying than anything else.

My parents had an Outback that sounded like a diesel on a cold start. That thing was ridiculous. Went 100k before they traded it.

I seem to remember my old Subaru would knock if it got even half a quart low in oil. As soon as I filled it, it would stop knocking.

I love Castrol for imports, btw. It's all I used. Their regular oil was great.

Interesting. My 09 legacy 2.5i is also rather loud on startup. Is this something to be concerned about?

Re: High mileage oil - worth it or marketing scam?

I have walmart's finest full synthetic SuperTech high-mileage (for vehicles >75k miles) in my 1997 Mustang V8 with 133k miles. I've noticed no difference from other oils.

Alternatively, I'm running Amsoil Signature Series in my 2015 Grand Cherokee that's supposed to be good for 25k miles or 1 year. I mainly use it because I like the once-a-year oil change but if I was going to run an OCI beyond factory, I would have the oil tested. I'm currently driving the Jeep about 5k miles a year and like the piece of mind.

My company car (2016 Cherokee) is currently getting driven at the rate of 4k miles/mo. I'm personally changing the oil at the OEM recommended 10k miles but would like to extend it to save me time but not sure the company would allow that.

Pitch an oil analysis from a place like Blackstone Labs.

Through their services, you could well end up extending oil change intervals with scientific proof backing it.

Do this. It's been super helpful for me; I can post some of my reports.

I took a seminar while working at Advance. They put a seal sweller in the HM oils. Only difference. How much of it in a quart nobody knew. (Blend oils are the same. %wise nobody knows) Personally I don't see any advantage to using a HM oil if it ain't leaking. Just a negative. Swelling up the seals might be good at the used car lot but why would anyone want to swell up non-leaking seals is beyond me.

It has additives to soften oil seals such as valve stem cups crank seals etc.

    Probably same as ATF
