    Moving to Texas. Y'all.

I'm taking a new job and moving to the Dallas area in a few weeks. Do you folks know what the trackday / racing scene down there is like? A simple google search says there are 5- 6 tracks within driving distance - looking for thoughts or feedback on whether any of these are fun tracks:

    - Eagles Canyon - 40 miles from the town I'll most likely live in.
    - MSR (Motor Sports Ranch) Cresson. Two road courses listed - 1.3 miles and 1.7 miles. 50 miles.
    - Texas World Speedway. 200 miles.
    - COTA. 220 miles.
    - Harris Hill Raceway. 240 miles.
    - MSR Houston. 300 miles.

What's a good trackday org in that region? Ride Smart? Monkeymoto? Lone star trackdays seems to have gone out of business. Not sure how soon I will jump into racing down there, but the governing body is CMRA?

Most importantly, I hereby appoint myself to the exalted league of NESR alumni such as pistorious, Ductard and the like...I will tirelessly spread the message of Rotella in the new world among the natives.

60 degrees there right now while we get the snow piled on two weeks out from "spring." For whatever reason every time I escape out west I somehow get pulled back to the east coast.

You'll have to make the pilgrimage to COTA for a motogp track experience! Just be prepared for those sensational track day fees.

Can testify to the Hot! Was 115 in Austin in July . But its a dry heat LOL .Cant talk about the tracks although I did look into what was around and you do have a few close tracks. CRMA is the race org. They do LOLA and Hallett in Ok also. Very good bike scene in Austin but that's away from Dallas.. Your Raptor should be a hoot in Texas room to let it run for sure. Very Good BBQ also.

RideSmart is the only org Ive ridden with. They're a good group.
Texas World is closed. Harris Hill is like Loudon without the walls (and is a membership track, but its easy to get time on). Havent been to either of the MSRs yet though.

Thank you both, that's helpful to know. Looking forward to a longer track season down there, may make the summers less hectic.

No input on your questions, but I have a friend in Dallas who would love to meet some other dual sport riders. Let me know if you get back into dirt and I'll put you guys in touch.

Yeah, it's going to take some time to get used to the climate change after living in CT!

    Re: Moving to Texas. Y'all.

I wanted to post an update on the trackday situation down here. Rode two tracks so far- Harris Hill & MSR-Houston. Have two more scheduled - MSR Cresson & Eagles Canyon. I think there are at least three more after that I want to hit up including COTA, bringing it to 7 total in the area. I believe CMRA races at MSR Cresson and MSR Houston, though I don't think I will race my first season down here.

HHR - Pittenger called it. This is the Loudon of Texas without the walls. Actually, it's more like if Loudon and NYST had a baby. Pavement is absolute shit, but it's a very nice layout and no walls and nice relaxed atmosphere like NYST. Members only. Open track all day with all groups running together. The quality of the pavement keeps speeds and accidents in check I suppose. No corner workers! But the track Marshall and ambulance sit on a hill and can see all the corners. 1.8 miles, flows nicely, ran it both CW and CCW same day. Ran the little R3.

Very interesting and inexpensive business model. You pay a one time initiation fee ($500) and a monthly subscription ($180) but you get to go as many as 6 days a month. Track is open year round. There is a sweet air conditioned club house where people hang and that has a full kitchen where members can cook whatever they want.

MSR-Houston is like NYST. 2.4 miles, high speed big bike track. We ran it CW but I believe they run it CCW as well. Flows very well. Ran the R3 again. Went through RideSmart track day company. $170 a day and super structured. You run in groups with many control riders etc. They did a track drive in the morning which was very useful like always. They make you sit in class between each session and hand out stickers at the end of each class. You need to have those stickers on your bike to get back on track for the next session! Classes were useful, but the whole sticker nazi thing was a bit much. I believe track is open from early March through end of Nov.

Ambient temperature was well over 100 both days, and "heat index" was probably even higher. So I didn't bother with tire warmers. When I am doing track days in Nov - February, I may use them, but rest of the year I don't think I will bother.

Hmmm.... maybe that's a way I can ensure people go to the riders meeting!

Cool writeup. In the last photo, are those permanent shade structures? Rain goes through though?

Yes permanent canopys, rain does not go through. The track rents garages and these canopies directly, I think the canopies are a bit cheaper to rent than the garages.
