    nastiest crash ive ever had...

...on skis. let me start by saying that ive been skiing for 20+ years. ive had my share of spills and falls and crashes (hi and lo speed). ive also skied through thousands of sno-guns of every make, model and style.

i went to Cannon yesterday as it was $25 if youre a NH resident. it was a little windy at the top but packed powder and corduroy everywhere. a friend and went. it was about 11 when we made a run to the base lodge for a break. if you look at the attached map the red represents our run. we got down to "Time Zone" (the blue) and this is where things went bad. it was ALL corduroy, only a couple tracks down the trail and a sign that said "snow making in progress". no big deal. again..20 years..blah blah blah. im moving pretty good making some big hard GS turns in the groomers. i get close to the gun (pink)(1 gun on the trail...thats it) so i straighten out. i turn my head to the right so i dont get ice on my goggles when WHAM!! a sharp blow to my head. "what was that?" i cant open my eyes as my goggles are askew. i feel my feet hit...then my head "shit im cartwheeling" i pull the arms and legs in and i begin rolling, and then sliding...lots of sliding.(yellow= crash zone) i stop. i cant breathe. i work to the air back into my lungs while my buddy gathers my stuff from 40 yards away. i have a sharp pain going through my shoulder. after i gather myself and get my bearings i hike to see what went wrong. the sno-gun was spraying water! not snow. im sure at one time it was spraying snow but not for some time. it was mush, slush almost. i kinda understood what happened then but completely until i put my skis on to get down the rest of the trail but they wont move, like theres velcro on them. i take them off and look at the bottom. its covered in ice. so now it all makes sense. if you cant figure it out ill explain it.

my skis are a certain temp...the temp of the sno and air around me. probably 10- 20 degrees. i go through the water/slush that the sno-gun created and it all instantly froze to the bottom of my skis thus acting like velcro with the snow, and stopping me completely in my tracks catapulting me forward, out of my bindings into my cartwheeling motion and breaking my ski. if youve ever been on a lift that went over a sno-gun and it froze to the bottom of your skis/board so when you went to get off the lift you fell like an idiot....its the same principle....only faster.

so since i cant ride down i have to walk (black). and the kick in the ass is... the trail i was on is only a connector trail to that lift (C) which wasnt even operating! one i walked past the lift it was all up hill. so even if i didnt crash i wouldve had to walk anyway to get back up to an operational lift. therefore..... there was no reason for the trail to be open...it was a dead end!

so here i sit with a separated shoulder and a broken ski. unable to work either of my jobs for a few weeks. awesome (sarcasm). im glad i dont have bills to pay.......oh wait. i guess now the lawyer calling begins.........

I had a binding release unexpectedly once when I was teaching (well, when I was supposed to be teaching) up at Loon (1992 maybe?) I never even got my hands up. I hit my head so hard that they thought I had detached my retinas. Helmets were unheard of back then. It was good times.

    Shit OX....that SUCKS BIG TIME...
Figures, right? You spend a whole season road racing and street riding and then you get all fakked up your first day skiing.

I gave up skiiing a few years ago for exactly that reason. Was afraid I'd do something to myself that would impact my motorcycle riding...go figure.

Hope you feel good enough to put this behind you until at least Jan 2. Have a good Christmas and New Years...

    Dave

It really sucks that you got hurt. Can you honestly say it was the ski areas fault? Were you skiing a little too fast for the conditions? Knowing your attraction to speed...hmmm
Yes, I have self-interest here...I like to ski Cannon and I don't want the ticket prices to double so they can fund your "recovery" in the Bahamas.
    Hope you feel better.

of course it is the skii resort's fault, had they been monitoring the snow machine or closed the trail then the accident would not have happened. They had a malfunctioning piece of equipment creating a hazard. that is like saying that if the brakes in my car fail and i hit someone then it is not my fault because they were Driving

good luck on your recovery Oxx, if you need anything let us know

oh shit dude... that friggin sucks.

Think I woulda gone to the First Aid hut or whatever they had & asked that the most senior manager swing by for a chat & told him that story to see what they woulda done... but that's probably one of the last things you woulda been thinking about at that moment.

i was having a good time, conditions were great. was i going to fast for the contions? well... lets look back. it was a fairly wide groomed blue square that only a couple of people had been down. how fast would you have been going? yes. i moving at a good clip but when i went by the gun i expecting either powder or ice...not slush. i believe that even if i was going slower that not much wouldve changed. 1 less cartwheel maybe?
im not trying to get rich off of them, im just trying to pay my bills for next couple months while im out of work.

there are laws in nh that give immunity to ski facilities that protect them from stupid people.
example: you miss the sign that says you are going down a black diamond trail and crash or you hit a tree or you are skiing out of control and crash or you are just stupid..BUT, i wasnt doing any of that. i was skiing at a sane speed, carving BIG, hard turns. and someone should have been checking the equip., or even better... the trail shouldnt have been open since it didnt go anywhere.

when i went inside i told the lady at guest services that there was something wrong with the gun and that they should close the trail and i also told the first aid guy i saw. he got on the PHONE and called someone and told them that they have a "wet" gun and someone needs to check it but "keep it off the radio". he checked out my skis and saw all the ice on the bottom of them and then he took down the make and model of the skis. im not sure why but thats what he did

i would go back, they had some nice trails, they did give me a voucher for a ticket but its only good on a wed.

Damn Ox, binding checks suck and I'm sorry you got hurt.

Every snow gun has two hoses. A water hose and an air hose. The lower the temperature the more water they can add to the mixture and the more snow they can produce. In this case, something changed or went wrong and there was more water in the gun than the temperature would support.

Two things come to mind about your complaint though.

First, I agree that the snow flakers or ski patrol could have checked the trail more frequently and discovered the problem before your mishap. However, we only get about a half dozen powder days each year and the chance of a powder day hitting on a day off is even more rare. Plenty of us enjoy skiing through the guns in what might be termed, "New England Powder." I'm just concerned that instead of checking guns more frequently, they'll ditch the "Snow Making In Progress" warning signs and instead close the trails. Personally, I hate seeing ropes across trails like the one where your mishap occurred. I'd much rather see, "Caution: ski at your own risk" signs.

Second, this is basically a New England liability. If you've ever skied outside of New England, say the Rockies or Alps, they basically offer controlled entrance points then let you ski at your own risk everywhere. There may be a sign at the entrance point that says, "cliff area" or "avalanche danger" but it's your choice to pass through the gate or not. I guess I just like having the option to choose whether to take the risk or not instead of being told by someone else what's best for me. It wasn't that long ago that New England mountains were filled with signs that read, "no speeding, no jumping, no tree skiing, no fun." I would hate for New England skiing/boarding to return to that level so I guess I just accept that occasionally I may get hurt when skiing questionable trails.

Maybe none of this applies since you said the trail dead ended. I think you understand my concern though. Bottom line, I hope you heal up soon and you did the right thing by reporting the poorly adjusted snow gun to the mountain staff.

hey, i was using an analogy dipshit, i didn't know anyone was stupid enough to actually drive without brakes, what did you do for 2 months without brakelights. stop trying to be funny and learn what an analogy is, plain and simple Oxx was interacted with by a piece of equipment that was not working properly and it caused him to injure himself. therefor the person responsible for making sure the machine was working properly is at fault.

Ox, sorry to hear you got hurt and I wish you a speedy recovery!

It is interesting how everyone is assessing blame here. The only people who know exactly what happened are Ox, his friend and some of the people at the mountain. Skiing is a risky sport that we make a decision to do, like riding/racing a motorcycle. Now the question is, does the mountain have any responsibility? The answer is that they might, hopefully you made the mountain write a report and give you a copy of it. They do have responsibility if they are negligent, however if the trail was posted with snowmaking they probably have an out as that is warning you that equipment is in use. Skiing lawsuits are very difficult to win, the back of your lift ticket gives you warnings.

With Cannon being a state run mountain good luck with a lawsuit.

Anyone ever read the back of their lift ticket? Unless you die or are critically injured in a ski accident b/c of something like, a pipeline on the side of the trail being unmarked... or a chair lift malfunctioning... most likely the mountains lawyers have already thought of how you can hurt yourself (thats their job) Yes, ive been injured on the mountain (Steamboat, CO.) yes ive been stupid on a headwall (Mt. Washington/Tuckermans Ravine) but skiing is an AT YOUR OWN RISK activity. I love skiing, been doing it since i could stand (about 24 years now), but yes i think the mountain should be replacing those skis, Oxx did they take down your personal info? you might receive a phone call that your new skis are ready to be picked up. OR they might give you a killer pair of demo skis (love demo sales at the end of the season)... Hope everything turns out... maybe we should have an NESR ski trip (my brother works as a lifty @ Loon Mtn.)

I am sorry to hear you got hurt. I agree that they should have been watching the guns more closely. It sounds like "wet guns" is a knows concern and they should be watching for that.
    Hope you heal up fast.

I'm not going to pretend that I don't do it, but ripping down a trail where you don't know the conditions isn't really the best idea. You headed into a low visibility situation without knowing what the terrain was like. If you want to go with an automotive analogy, it's like coming around a blind corner and lowsiding because of sand across the road. Sure, it shouldn't be there, but if you were at a speed where your stopping distance is proportional to your line of sight it wouldn't be an issue. The Skiers' Code is to always be in control and within your limits. Coupled with all the disclaimers posted around the mountain, you've got to accept that it's a high risk activity and you have to look out for yourself. Not saying I don't do the same shit myself, or that I wouldn't be equally pissed, but trying to get anything out of the mountain is going to be near-impossible.

Basically what this means is there is about 4 people on the mountain that know what happened and you have no chance of getting a report off of any of them if you did not get one in writing at the time. So basically any chance you had or proving their negligence is pretty slim now.

    No report+no pictures+no proof = no lawsuit

Its going to be your word and your buddies against theirs. I am not trying to be a dick but just saying good luck and if you are going to pursue this you need to do so right away.

Hope you feel better and I have seperated both my shoulders and had to have surgery one one so I know how you feel.

i put down "wet gun" in the report.

the sand analogy isnt really accurate...its more like youre riding down a road and some smashes you with a 2x4 as you go by. you cant see wet snow.. nor did i expect there to be any when it was 20 degrees out.

like i said.. im not trying to get rich...i just want some help paying my bills. i have ins, so im not concerned about that.. but being out of work when you have 2 jobs is gonna be tough.
