    Nasty NH MTB Trails?

I know a few of you push pedal bikes around too. Looking for recommendations on some must-ride intermediate/advanced MTB trails in NH or maybe beyond. Ton of good trails here in Maine but we’re planning a few trips this summer and I might sneak in some side rides. Good technical stuff and maybe some DH I don’t have to be a pro to survive?

    Re: Nasty NH MTB Trails?

I'm taking my youngest to Highland in a couple weeks - a first for both of us. May even sign him up for one of their summer camps.

I've ridden Bear Brook State Park...pretty basic stuff, but you can get yourself into trouble if you want to.

Much of NH's snowmobile trails are open to mountain bikes. You'd have to check NH's Trail Bureau site.

We have a lot of Class 6 roads & old logging roads around us & near our property.

Damaged knees w/ arthritis in both has generally kept me off the mountain bike for a couple years, although I did some easy road & rec trail stuff last summer. I'm determined to get back at it this year.

Want a challenge or just a fun ride? PRKR Mountain in Littleton is going to fill the bill if you are looking for a tramway ride to the top and technical nastiness on the roll down hill. North Conway East Side is pretty good. Bear Brook in Allentown. D-Acres in Dorchester is DH fabulous but will require you to pedal up.

I was just at Burke Mountain Ski Resort in VT for a conference and the wife took her mtn bike on some of their trails. Looks like there are some pretty aggressive downhill runs you can hop on. You're probably not up for that kind of stuff though...…...ha!

I forgot that Gunstock has MB trails now too. I've never been, but it's now on the list.

If you can, go in the middle of the week. I don't like crowds either. Although I've been there on the weekend too and it wasn't too bad. If you want technical trail and downhill, you gotta try it at least once. The trails that get the most youtube attention tend to be the smoother stuff, but there's some technical trails too.

    Re: Nasty NH MTB Trails?

Here's something to help you out...

    new hampshire | NEMBA

Should give you a few minutes worth of perusing.

There are links for the other New England states too. One of my coworkers is/was President (or something?) of the Central NH chapter of NEMBA, and I rode with him a good amount a couple years ago. A one year old at home has pretty much stopped my mtb riding after work these days.

The Page Hill trails have some pretty gnarly stuff in them. Franklin Falls has a mix of flow vs gnar (different skill levels). Ahern State Park is literally right behind my work. There are a bunch of other small local spots not listed on there too.

    Re: Nasty NH MTB Trails?

Good stuff... thanks! I might be sold on Highlands. Nice groomed trails are a foreign concept to me lol. Lots to pick from, I've been going over NEMBA maps/rides, trailforks, MTB project, etc. trying to pick a few that are worth the drive. Next stop is probably Bond Brook near Augusta.

Finally upgraded my MTB this year after a lifetime of pounding on $200 box store hardtails. With the number of miles I've put on bikes I can't believe I didn't do this sooner. Bikes have come SO FAR. I can finally hit a hill without parts flying off my bike and derailleurs getting chewed up! Definitely open to some challenging trails but I've been pretty slack on my pedal bike last few years so I'm kind of whooping myself back into shape.

Sounds like we're in the same boat! Hit me up if you make it toward NH's Lake Region. My knees are the only thing that holds me back, but I'm trying like hell to work through it and not let this shit control me. LOL!

    Re: Nasty NH MTB Trails?

It doesn't get any better than kingdom trails in New England...or even most of the country. There are some amazing flatter trails there, but that place absolutely rewards fitness. Nothing is overly steep, but you won't be able to take full advantage without pedals you clip into and some ability to suffer. I've ridden KT a lot, I will never stop going back. Beer selection at Mike's Tiki Hut, coin op showers and bike wash, and burrito truck at the end of the day cannot be beat and are all next to each other. The only problem with KT is that it will ruin every other trail system you ride.

I've never done highland, I would like to.

I've ridden up the auto road and made one run down Burke. They did a good job there. Would suggest it for lift op...but I've heard Highland is much better.

Everything good at Bear Brook is near the parking lot. Don't do the giant loop around the whole park. It sucks.

Not New Hampshire...but check out Russell Mill (Chelmsford?). It has a very easy trail up a mountain with 3 or 4 options down that are not overly technical or scary, but flow very well. They then have a good handful of XC loops. I can kill 3 hours there no problem.

Will do! We haven't explored NH nearly enough. I'm thankful my knees have held up (so far).. a good friend of mine was nearly immobilized by knee problems (some type of arthritis) for a few years but after massive dietary changes and constant exercise he'll outrun and outhike me any day of the week. Obviously not the same for everyone but hopefully you can work through that shit!

Drooling over trail maps at kingdom this afternoon.. wow. I've got a lot of work left to do but I can take some suffering.

    Clipless? All over it bruh

But seriously, I have no intention of ditching flats right now but the temptation is there. Just freaks me out.

Never been to kt since it's so far away but Highland is awesome. Hellion and bonesaw are the bomb.

Franklin falls is also pretty fun.

Yudicky has a lot of fun stuff too depending where you go there.

And as far as clipless just do it. When you are first starting with it you can loosen the pedal tension to make it easier to get out of. As you get used to it you can tighten the tension back up. You are going to fall when getting used to it .. It just happens haha.

Sounds eerily similar. I was pretty much incapacitated for most of the winter. I couldn't ride the snow machines, could only plow standing up on the wheeler, was unable to use the snowblower, couldn't get the bobhouse out, and did ZERO ice fishing this winter. I needed a cane just to get to work. I knew something was dreadfully wrong, so after a three years hiatus I finally saw a doctor. Once we got my "call 911" blood pressure under control (+/- 215/120), we also went to work on a massive dietary overhaul (watch the damn purine, sodium, sugar, fructose, etc.). All that and two knee drains has me to the point where I can get on the MB again. I can't fuckin' wait to start hammering that thing again!

I can't do anything BUT flats. I've tried the clipless, I just couldn't set in with them. I got a decent set of Answer flats with metal studs that work great with the 5-10's I wear. I'll stick with those. No pedal scars since I switched.

I don't do good beer, but enjoy shitty beer and good schmoke. But as I said, if you make it out my way let me know!

The solution is the SH-56 multi-release angle Shimano cleats.
