Pump track and park bikes these days are pretty vastly different in term of Geometry. If you're talking just ride around a park, air some tables etc then pretty much anything will work, but when you get in to more technical park riding, a BMX race bike will feel like a limousine. Generally, the race styled bikes are lower top tube and stretched geometry with longer rear triangles. The park bikes are much more stout and "square."

I'd probably feel more comfortable riding a park bike on a pump track than a race bike at a park. just my thought.

Haro is actually surprisingly big in the race scene these days. I have a Pro XXL Haro Citizen Carbon Frame and carbon fork sitting in a box under my desk that I've been trying to sell, but no one wants used carbon...

I was, in no way, talking about race bikes.

Being 5' 4", it seems I want something along the lines of 20" TT max. Am I overthinking this? I just want to ride the pump track and hit the park to improve my MTB skills.

haha, Off the ledge I come. I see a few on CL that may fit the bill, then. All I remember from the 90's was that chromoly was the hot shit as was 3pc cranks. On the surface, these bikes really haven't evolved that much.

Is anyone interested in doing this? I did this 2 years ago with arcy and it was a blast. I'm planning on being there this year as long as the weather cooperates!

It's basically a ride of the Boston Marathon route starting at midnight the morning of the Marathon. There are thousands there every year. It is the night of 4/14.

I’m supposed to work a 24 that day. I’m already taking the day segment to do the mix tape ride. It’s the midnight bit that gets me. Way past my bedtime.

Totally get that. Really cool ride to experience once if you have the chance though.

Strange weather so far this year. Very wet. Looks like rain again this weekend, and that will make the 4th wet race in as many weeks.

Trails haven't been that bad surprisingly.

I don't mind riding in the rain that much anyways.

Not sure what speeds you are looking at, but you can't compare your speed alone vs that of a group. If you are comfortable drafting, give it a shot and see if you can sit in. If this is a balls-out drop ride, I agree, you won't have any fun. I get dropped from those if I don't ride smart.

The Fitness Factory ride wasn't a total smashfest, but fast and steady. Definitely had to bring the legs yesterday, and thankfully they delivered! 378 Watt 5 minute power and 264 Watt average for the ride. 29.5 miles at 21.4 mph.

    So incredibly true.

Guess which one of those rides is in a group (that likes to draft)?

I dropped in on a "no drop" LBS group ride one afternoon late in the season. Turns out all the fat rec riders like me had packed it in for the season and I was left with the a bunch of cats that knew wtf they were doing. I have never ridden that fast, ever. Mind melting.

    Leading is REALY hard.
I've gone into T1 @ Loudon in a pack, 3 wide. I can handle being close to guys on a bike.. right? Wrong!

On the flat. In the open. We were flying.
Given that stretch is along the ocean and it feels like every time I do that loop I choose poorly and wind up with a stiff headwind along the coast and something of a tailwind on the return flight under cover of trees inland. The guys on that group ride seemed smarter than me-low bar-and probably chose better than I.

But still. Turns out aero is a thing. Solo vs group ride times are not comparable.

    Re: Official non-motorized motorcycle thread.

Well I got a weird one for you....some of you may have seen my Strava title the other day and been curious.

After a Saturday gobbling down wine in Sonoma, I camped in the van and had plans to ride Annadel State Park on Sunday, which is a little north. Friends here said it was excellent, and it was. I did about 35 miles in 3.5 hours. Definitely feeling it this week.

I found a route on ridewithgps and was following along my cues, when I kinda notice a weird rock off the trail. 2 seconds later I see handlebars sticking up on the other side of the trail. That rock was a man, probably in his 50s, over 6 feet, and a fit, dad bod 200 pounds. He is face down, on his arm, unconscious, hyperventilating. No one else is around, I don't know how long he is there. I go over to him, and he is completely unresponsive, but clearly breathing considering he is hyperventilating. I have terrible service, but call 911. 911 and I are playing this game of, "what did you say, sorry your breaking up" for like 5 minutes. Lets also add in that I have no idea where I am other than the name of the state park. Eventually, 911 understands what park I am in and kicks me over to the state park rescue center, but that call drops too. This whole time I am monitoring this guy, not wanting to move him, but honestly just waiting for him to stop breathing at this point. Looking at the time stamp, the phone call with 911 was over 5 minutes long. At some point while on the broken phone call with the state park, the guy kind of comes to; he rolls over onto his side. Still hyperventilating, still unresponsive, but I can see his face and arm and he isn't busted up or anything. Let me also add at this point that I have zero medical training. None. I've sadly had to fake my way through CPR before, and I'm prepared to do it again, but yeah, not good.

Now the guy immediately goes from being unresponsive to trying to get up. I'm on the phone with the park, with no service, trying to keep this guy down on the ground. Eventually the call drops again so I fully focus on the guy. He can't stand up but is trying. I'm doing my best to talk to him, but I doubt he even notices I'm there. Eventually I seem to get through to him and he sits down and makes eye contact...if you want to call it that. I start with "do you no your name?" No response. A couple tries later I switch to "do you know where you are." He responds, "Yeah, Annadel park" in the creepiest, slowest, most slurred voice I think I have ever heard. I go to "are you with anyone?" No response. "Do you know what happened?" No response.

Finally, someone else shows up. He has service so I call 911 again. While I'm on the phone, this guy starts trying to stand up again. He gets to his feet, but we are holding him up. We get him to sit back down. I go back to the phone call and realize I have no way of explaining where we are. Two more people roll up, I ask them if they know the trails and they do, so I hand them the phone. Now I switch back to the dude who is standing up again. As I'm physically holding him, trying to get him to sit down, he goes and picks up his bike. Almost falls over it, then leans on the bars and starts walking with his bike down the trail. Now I'm following him, physically holding him by his pack, trying to get him to sit down. He was unresponsive the first few minutes we walked. His face is 100% unresponsive. His eyes glaring right through me when I position myself in front of him. He starts to speak, saying things like, "heeeeey mannn, I'm fineeee. Whats your prroooooblem?" "Sir, you crashed your bike, you were unconcious for 10 minutes, you need to rest." This goes on for another 5 minutes, me following him, this stupid back and forth between us. Eventually someone happened to be riding along the trail and joined my cause.

Next, he starts to get on his bike. I think, "Great, he is just going to immediately fall over and we can rest." Nope. He is slow, less than walking pace, but he is riding. I'm still holding his back, bargaining with him to get off the bike and rest: "Hey man, I'm not calling an ambulance, you just need to sit and rest for a few minutes. You crashed really hard. Lets just relax for a few minutes." I know what its like. I've faked my way out of ambulance rides before. His speech is still incredibly slurred, but it is making slight improvement and he is talking more. He tells us where he lives (to which one of the other guys now with me tells him is the other way). He never says he is alone, but we piece together that he rode from his house and didn't drive here.

He gets off the bike a few minutes later and starts walking. We still cannot get him to stop. He gets back on the bike. He still can't really speak. He starts riding again, saying he's fine, etc. At this point, I've walked with him for 20+ minutes, I have no idea where my bike is. After more and more of this, his speech gets a little better and he is getting hostile. Hostile, slurred speech is fucking spooky. It's like he's possessed. I'm afraid he's going to take a swing because I'm still physically holding onto his pack. Eventually, he picks up speed, and at that point I let him ride away, not knowing what else to do beside tackle the guy.

I kinda stand there for a bit, chatting with the other guy. We recount where he crashed and it was an odd place, no real obstacles. We throw around that maybe he had a stroke or heart attack or something causing the accident. Thankfully the people I handed the phone to at the scene have brought my bike up to me. They said the park cancelled the ambulance and the chopper they had on stand-by. He refused treatment, left the scene, there is nothing else they can do.

I got home, checked strava flybys to find his ride and nothing. He either doesn't post, is private, or never made it home.

    What the shit guys?

That's weird. IMO you did what you could. Some people just can't be helped. I know because I (sometimes) are one.
