I haven't been able to leg press less than 500 lbs since I was a pup. Can put down some big power....for a few seconds

Maybe that will change soon. I'm sub-230 now, and I think my original goal of sub-220 is a bit...soft To aid in that effort, I plotted a 27 mile dual-sport ride northeast of New London I'll take on Saturday.

Just finished a double double. 2 races at Kalon CX on Saturday (Cat 4 35+ and Cat 2/3/4) and 2 races at Quad CX on Sunday (Cat 1-4 40+ and Cat 4 40+). My feet, ankles and legs were pretty tired. I think I am all set on doubling up for now on.

I’m just over here cruising a couple local dirt jump spots like weeeeeeeee.
Toss in a few early morning solo skate sessions and I’m feeling like my old self again. Sorer, but fulfilled.

    Not even close. Kalon 4 35+ - 19/28, 2/3/4 - 38/43; Quad 40+ 1-4 - 32/35, 4 40+ - 20/33.

Next is Hydra where I am planning on just tearing up a 4/5 field. Race Predictor has me doing very well there.

All set. 40 mm Cromag stem, Mallets, and a fresh set of ESI Chunky’s. Long travel Thudbuster arrives Friday, then we play. Upper left corner, graph of my productivity today.

This bike is so overkill to only ride it when I'm in Boston...but my god it is excellent. As good as my Tarmac...don't think so. But its phenomenal.

I ended up donating my old Allez to Bikes Not Bombs...along with an entire closet and basement full of parts. I felt better doing that than trying to sell it as it does have its issues. The tax benefit is pretty darn good too - about equal to selling with zero the effort.

    Re: Official non-motorized motorcycle thread.

Ok, 2 rides in on the 5.10’s & Mallets. First one was a rough mf’er. Less than 30 minutes into the ride I had a tough fall where I couldn’t get unclipped, fell downhill and speared myself in the ribs with the bar end. That was Friday at Foxboro, still hurts quite a bit today. Should probably be right by next weekend. Went out and rode Village Park today, those damn trails go on and on, really great place to ride, I’m starting to get a good lay of the land. Had some trouble exerting hard because of the ribs, but got a lot more comfortable with the new pedal/shoe setup. I think they’re just extremely tight when new and take a few hours to loosen up. By end of day I was able to get in and out like I want to. I’m extremely happy with the switch. If I want to clip in, I do. If I want to ride as platforms, I can. 100% an upgrade over the SPD’s. Lastly, let me give my most glowing recommendation to the Thudbuster LT seat post. I need to install heavier elastomers, but this thing is titties. I’ve been wanting a dropper post, but realistically I’d use that less than 5% of my ride. I use the Thudbuster the rest of the time. Hard tail guys, you need to give this thing a look, hands down the best upgrade I’ve done to my bike.

I've come to notice during road races everyone wants to take advantage of the paceline but nobody wants to put in the time pulling. Because nobody wants to pull the paceline slows down and I peel off. Then everyone just latches onto my rear tire again.

A road race is a X distance road ride (where nobody wants to do any work) with a sprint at the end.

You're racing now? I'm so proud. But yes...you aren't wrong, however the tactics typically get better as your category decreases.

I haven't done a race with categories yet. These were both mass start. (Hill climb time trial and triathlon that had the biking first).

Maybe I should have started further up and latched onto a faster pack.

FYI Smutty, traditionally you are not allowed to draft in Tri's. at least if it is a USAT sanctioned event.

Yeah I didn't draft for almost all this race because of this. I was really confused.

There is a caveat here. Tactics won't get you past Cat 4 if you don't have a strong fitness base. With a strong fitness base, you have an increase in tactical options. Early on, hiding and not taking a pull may be all you got.

    That part is true...

...but I disagree with this part. I faked my way to cat 1 with incredibly mediocre fitness - as have a lot of fellow racers. You won't win a hilly road race without fitness, but flat races and especially crits heavily rely on technique. My FTP was well below 4w/kg when I got my cat 3 upgrade. I'm also willing to bet that you are faster than me on paper. However, I understand that "strong fitness base" is a relative term and we may be on the same page. All I know is that my fitness has always been in the bottom half of my races - not for lack of trying, I'm just genetically terrible at cycling.

My original quote about tactics getting better as you go down categories was more in reference to how the race plays out. In the higher categories, what Smutty described is pretty spot on. No one wants to do anything, you get all these weird surges. Either the strongest folks happen to find each out and get off the front or its a bunch sprint with no lead out. There will always be exceptions, I'm talking in relative terms.

As you drop down the categories, you start seeing teamwork, lead outs, breaks that are allowed to go and then brought back, etc. Part of this has to do with the sheer level of experience in each of the races. The other part is that you typically know who you're racing the longer you race. Knowing who is strong, who is up the road, who to watch out for, etc makes it much more of a chess game than a checkers match.

If anyone is interested I'm meeting a buddy at Diamond Hill after work today, somewhere around 5:00-5:15 depending on when I get out. Bring a light.

Went away for the weekend to do this with some buds. 2 runs from ~8k down to ~3k. Shuttle service. It was incredible. TGR has it right. Absolute bucket list item. 150mm of travel was perfect. Not full on downhill, just the most amazing flowy slightly downhill trail you could imagine with pockets of “hold on for dear life” steep. And enough uphill to rest/keep you occupied.

Not that new. 2018 or maybe its an early gen 2019? I got it a couple months before they went to the single sided shock mount thing. I like it. It was an incredible price for the specs on it. 650b, Fox34 fork, 150mm travel, 12 speed SRAM Eagle. Usually the expert level bikes are $6k (see current line-up now). This was priced insanely low so I sold my 2017 stump jumper to get it.

I haven't built a mountain bike up yet because I wasn't riding them all that often. Just buy one, ride it for 2 years, sell it, buy another...etc.
