Paying for a big ticket item off ebay?

I thought there was a thread here about paying for largish items off ebay that I had even responded to but damned if I can find it so here goes..

What's the safest and best way to pay for an expensive car off ebay if I have to buy it and ship it sight unseen? I have a time/distance issue that I cant really overcome right now to go make the purchase in person. I do have a shop doing a pre-purchase inspection on it so I'm not worried about conditional issues, just paying for it and staying safe. The dealer has excellent feedback so I am also not to worried about anything unsavory on his end but he is not really down with taking paypal for the full amount of the car.

You can use and escrow service, but it costs something.

^^ Yes -- I used escrow.com a couple of times, once selling and once buying a bike. It worked well and was worth the expense in my view.

Links for an escrow service please. I hadnt thought about that. I assume it kind of works the same way as buying a house?

+1 for an escrow service, used one to buy a dirt bike from out of state + sell a car out of state ... sight unseen in both cases ... all parties were happy.

Could you pay a friend to fly and drive it back?

I've thought about that before I realized its winter for a good chunk of its journey. If it was summer it would be feasible but it's not a car you would ever drive in even drizzle, nevermind snow or cold. I have a couple friends who can go down and trailer back but again, it's a time issue.

Escrow seems to be the way to go. I just gotta find a good one. So many horror stories online about escrow ebay scammers now that I'm looking.

Might have been my thread. Not just ebay but any internet sale for a truck. It was about 5 months ago. I wound up buying from a dealership in tx. And had it shipped. I wired the money after a pre approval inspection by an independent shop.

Cost for transport was 1000 door to door

Bankers check, send it with insurance. But also as another thing you can do is, have them draft up a bill of sale then both sign and then send money. That way you have something in writing. Other can chime in. I just sold my dirt bike to a guy in Texas and it was pretty painless just transparent communications too. But try to have an out if things start to feel iffy.

You’re doing a PPI and you say the dealer is reputable... then why not just wire the money?

And you have to tell us what it is. Those are the rules

Wiring money is an option as well. I felt like I may not have been protected enough if something goes sideways so I wanted more pptions.
Im really digging the escrow way. I can rig it so I am covered entirely up to when the car is dropped off since the dealer has it's own shipper that it uses which also saves me the headache of getting another party involved to get the car.

I am buying a fox body Saleen. It's been a dream of mine and with the prices starting to really climb I feel now is the time to buy before I get priced out again. They dont come up for sale often anymore, regardless of price.

There will be another car purchased later in the year that will probably be what you are expecting. Im just waiting to see what the market does with them. Im pretty sure they are gonna drop in value again.
The saleen are just raising in value so now is the time to buy.

That's pretty damn cool. I graduated high school in '01, a buddy of mine had a Fox body Saleen in high school, it was cool then too as a 10 year old car. I found this article on Hagerty that gives some good history about the Fox body Saleens I had never really looked into before.
