The Photo Thread

    Re: The Photo Thread

On the cruise a year ago. Snapped no less than 600 shots of everything in site like the usual, but I always have a saying that out of all of those if 2 or 3 come out "good" in my eyes I'm happy.

Once I snapped this I knew I'd be happy with it.

It encapsulates that cruise vacation feeling.

And this is one of my favorites of my car from last year

Nice! Looks great! Those overcast days are a blessing and a curse. Colors pop a bit less, but it's like nature's soft box, so it offers some other cool opportunities (sometimes just what you need for a macro shot).

I'm not really there yet, but I've been playing with trying to sync panning and shutter speed with moving subjects. I try to think about what I want to blur and what I want sharp.

Local legend, all-around great guy John Owens is a legit master of this technique. https://www.owenstrackdayphotos.com/

A great addition to a lockdown photo toolkit is a bird feeder. We set a few up and in pretty short order had some cool wildlife delivered for literal peanuts.

    Re: The Photo Thread

I really dig the rear plane photo and the cruise ship photo.

When I like a photo, I try to figure out why I like it so I can hopefully replicate it when I take a photo.

The rear plane photo I like because the color of the sky and the symetry: the wings are cropped, so its even when you crop the tail. The props are more or less lined up. That is what makes it appealing to me.
I don't know why I like the cruise ship photo. I think its the color pallete. The yellow, blue and white. Maybe its his tattoos? I don't know.

Its easy to know why I like Tricky's macro bird photos - image quality and the details you would never appreciate in real life.

Glad Marco jumped in. He's one of the reasons I went Sony Alpha. I assume my style will follow his a bit.

It was late September 2018. Spent 5 days cruising Buzzards Bay and Martha's Vineyard in my old boat which, lacked a TV. I was in NB looking for a transient slip so I could walk to a sports bar and watch the Pats crush the Dolphins 38 to 7 while enjoying some adult beverages, then spend the night in the slip. Unfortunately, none of the marinas in the area had a slip for me, so I cruised up to the top of Buzzards bay, spent the night at the resasonably-priced Taylor Point Marina (right next to the Maritime Academy) and watched the game at a bar near there.

As fate would have it, that was the final "long" cruise in that boat and a great way to end 13 fantastic seasons with it. I sold it last May. MV was the highlight of the trip, but I enjoyed walking around Onset, Mattapoisett, Marion, and Wareham too. I'll hit some other ports next time.

Canon EOS Rebel T6, kit lens.

When I lived in MA I was SUPER into photography with cheaper semi DSLRs, but since Ive got the dslr, its too complicated, I dont get it, and I take mediocre snapshots with it. Id love to get some lenses though.

Honestly some of the most fun shooting I've ever had was using a mid-grade point-and-shoot with a tiny ~4MP sensor. I bought an aftermarket adapter for it that took standard threaded filters. Lenses are cool and all, but filters are where its at. The original post-processing.

Do any of you shoot in RAW and then convert?

I carry a Mono-pod as the canon 70D can get weighty with a big lens and it's a nice balance of portability and support.

Here's one I took a few years back.
    Canon 70D
    Stock 50mm lens
Don't know the settings, but wish I would have tightened it up a little to get rid of the grain on the boards. But had to snap fairly quickly as boats do rock a bit even with calm water.
    The Photo Thread-20150817_195223-jpg

This was with a Tamron 70-300, f4, and auto on the shutter speed. I find it difficult to get quicker shutter with a bigger lens to capture the subject without the blur. I probably need a better lens.
    The Photo Thread-fb95img951563882867010-jpg

And this was with my Samsung S4. I was pretty impressed with the level of detail from that old phone. I like to call this one, "Christmas up in flames".

Alluding to a lot of comments above: phone cameras are incredible. A well framed shot with reasonable light with one can be just as good as one from a fancy DSLR/mirrorless camera.

    Speaking of phone pictures...

I took this the other night and was surprised at how it came out. Sorry that the forum limits it to 800x600.

Hah! That is a fun fact. I was pending taking that shot for years until I finally caught it at the right time. Freezing day it was!

    Re: The Photo Thread

This is a work in progress. I went out on a full moon looking for some extra light. Wound up finding myself in a cool spot with Orion in the background. I'll need to go back with less light pollution and try to get a similar shot. Now that I have a few more snaps under my belt I think I can do a lot better. I had to play with the exposure way too much. Best bet in those light conditions would have been to bracket the exposure of the sky and the foreground separately and combine - but I'm new and only have lightroom on iPad pro (no photoshop or other app I know to combined bracketed photos). I took a bunch of other very cool photos, but keeping them hush hush until I can do them better.

This was in the winter. When the fog rolls in in the summer, I've heard it mutes all of the light pollution from the city and Mt Tam is a gold mine for star photos. Really looking forward to that. They close the road up to Tam dusk-to-dawn so bikes are the only way. This photo wasn't all the way up there, this was just in the Marin Headlands.

Also need to work on resizing JPEGs before uploading to the web. I think that should help instead of relying on Imgur's resizing...click the link for better photo.

Thanks! Wonder what you think of this one. Different sky, different plane. Completely different year. Same style.
