    Pneumonia Yay!

After some of the big Northeasters that came through early this month, I spent a bit of time clearing downed trees and limbs for neighbors while fighting a raspy cough.

Fast forward to 1:00AM on 3/15 and wifey is taking me to the emergency room after I ignore her requests to go to the doctor for several days.

12 hours, 3 liters of IV fluid and 3 breathing treatments later they released me with a diagnosis of pneumonia.

Two more days of hacking up a lung and not sleeping and they prescribed some cough suppressant with codeine. Sleep improved and I thought I was on the mend.

Because we'd lost the previous week of school to snow and my sickness, I taught Monday and Tuesday, gave exams on Wednesday and Thursday, went in for students advising for a bit on Friday.

Then I went to my other office on Saturday to get caught up and spent Sunday grading the exams at home.

...and the demon returned with a vengeance...

Back at the Doc this morning, a STERN talk bout taking it easy, a new course of antibiotics and orders to cut the crap and take care of myself.

Cancelled all classes this week (Easter - Short week) and hopefully will be able to resume next Tuesday.

    Lesson learned...

Yup, some nasty shit. My wife seems to get it about every 2-3 years, even spending the better part of a week in the hospital because like you she refused to see the doctor.

My mother spent ELEVEN days on life support from complications because of the same refusal to see a doctor. She developed Sepsis as a result and we almost lost the old bird. Once off life support and stabilized, she spent another couple weeks in there recovering then A MONTH at in-patient rehab.

It's a lot more serious than people nowadays like to admit. Get that shit squared away!

Hospitalized for weeks first time I got it, age 5. Had it several times since then, but fortunately not for 15 years or longer now. I usually get a strong metallic taste once the coughing reaches a certain level, and antibiotics are effective with not too long of a recovery period if you get it early. It’s a tricky bitch, one minute you feel like you broke out of it and can do whatever it is you need to, next minute you’re dizzy and sweating buckets or shivering uncontrollably. Nasty illness, hope you’re better soon.

The tricky part bit me over the weekend. Just when I thought I was on top of it, it got back on top of me.

    Thanks for the well wishes.

    Re: Pneumonia Yay!

It’s tough for sure, hope you’re better soon. I had walking pneumonia last June which isn’t as severe but it was still miserable. Most difficult part was the recovery; after I was “better” it still took over a month before my lungs felt decent. It’s 19 steps from 1st to 2nd floor at work. I usually take them two at a time but when I was sick and recovering I could barely climb them without getting winded. Best of luck on the recovery, take it easy because there isn’t any rushing it.

My wife got it. She seemed more susceptible for 2-3 years. Caveat.

For real though I hope you are on the mend. It sounds awful.

I wish I had enough for this! 10ml once before bed is it.

And, yes, this is less fun than almost anything I’ve experienced.
