I have it. Service isn't the greatest in some spots but it works for me. Is usually $48/month including the $15/month payment for the phone itself.

    Re: project fi

Although I like the idea, Project Fi doesn't really make sense when you compare it to a low cost mobile operator like Cricket (an AT&T sub), who offers a $35/mo flat rate fee for 2.5GB of high speed data (then throttled after) and unlimited everything else, especially when you factor in the carrier coverage in the northeast (Sprint and T-Mobile don't have great service in rural NH last I checked).

If you want to minimize your phone payments and maximize value, buy a $200 Moto G, which is more than adequate for the everyday phone user (like myself), and get Cricket or Straight Talk. The average payoff for buying a mid tier phone outright is usually in the realm of 8-10 months compared to a subbed phone.

    Re: project fi

I've been using it for a few months. It's really going to depend on how good Sprint and T-mobile coverage is in the areas you normally travel. The big plus for me is the international coverage.

Billing is just stupid simple. Pay $20 / month for unlimited text and phone. $10/GB for data, estimated up front but you pay for what you use. It has another cool feature that when it finds a "trusted wifi network" it automatically connects you and creates a VPN connection to protect your data.

I find it does sometimes have trouble finding the best network to connect to, but you can address that with signal spy.

I've been on Fi for a few months, had been on Sprint. Haven't noticed any difference other than the lower monthly $$. Typically use my phone for email, text, surfing and some calls

I'm in the Boston area so ymmv

    Re: project fi

    pro's:
-coverage way better than Virgin Mobile
-Nexus 5x was better than the LG volt
    -battery life started out okay
    -seamless calls between networks/wifi
    -easy

    Con's
-not always best signal...max volume/squeeze phone against ear to hear
-sometimes really damn slow internet (usually on whatever network has 4G LTE...so Sprint?)
-battery life down to about 8-12 hours depending on usage (worse if hot...horrendous if I go out and do a lot of SnapChat)
-Apparently I use it a lot out of wifi - usual bill ~$45...sometimes as much as $75

BIGGEST CON - I am about to leave for work, phone is fully charged with factory charger. Google maps opened to check traffic; running late. Place phone on automotive charger and screen was blank like it was off. The F?
-press/hold power button 30sec->1 minute at a time - nothing
-left phone plugged into charger - nothing
-press and hold power + volume down - nothing

get home and google it - apparently an update kills the phone.

    IT'S BRICKED.

Contact project Fi live chat - they have me try all the steps I found on the forums, no success. LUCKILY - the phone was covered by a 1 year manufacturer warranty. They will send me a replacement, I throw in a sim card, then I can at least make calls/texts. Going to probably have to re-load all my apps tho. All my pics were backed up to google photos IIRC.

Check this thread date - May 27th, 2016. I was 341 days into a 365 day warranty cut off. Almost missed it! Phew!

Honestly, thinking about giving into the iPhone craze on a prepaid plan or T-mobile. Camera on the iphone and the speed of the social media apps (namely snapchat) seem to be fastest.

But man...I remember when my Dad and I tried to get $55 flip phones off of ebay. Now I'm spending $250-$300 and having to get another phone in under a year?

Technology inflation is a bitch...phones, pickup trucks, they're all 2-6 times more expensive than 15 years ago.

    Re: project fi

Just happened to me too. The 5x is made by LG. LG has a class action suit against them for boot looping. My 5x just boot looped on Friday. I picked up a Nexus 6p. Way better phone and won't run into the same problem. This happens with 6 or so models of LG phones and they are still selling them even with the issue. Threw my refurbished 5x on CL when I got it. Hopefully meeting someone today to buy it.

Been a Project Fi user for 6 months and absolutely love it, girlfriend switched over too. Has everything I liked about Tmobile (international data and texting) plus international calling for 1 cent a minute for most countries. Can't imagine going back to a carrier.

Also hearing about this new MVNO called Mint Sim. Even cheaper than Fi (a lot cheaper), and also leases spectrum from Tmobile.

knew nothing about the 5x, year later it sucks...forum rumors that LG didn't make many motherboards (since it's not a flagship phone) and were offering refunds

Don't know anything about the pixel...iphone seems more consistent with being reliable and high performance?

    eek it's also $649

    shheez...3rd replacement phone??

On third 5x. I don't want to leave Fi, but I also don't want to potentially deal with a fourth bootlooping device. Has anyone heard of Fi sending out a different device? : ProjectFi

I'd much prefer the full refund so I can drop project fi and move to t-mobile

$50 for 3 months at 5GB per month? Alright... this has my attention. I've been on VZW for 15 years, but that's crazy cheap and the coverage seems good around central NH.

Seems like fuzzy info on if/how a VZW iphone 7 can be swapped over though.

Just buy a decent used previous gen iPhone, pop a new $20 battery in it and use it for years. My 6S is still rockin fast and solid.

    Re: project fi

Just to put it out there, I've had 7 iPhones and never had a brick. Fell off a trail over a bridge into a river with my iPhone 5 and still got another 2 years out of it lol. Meanwhile my "waterproof" Android S4A died from water in a few months and they refused to replace/fix it.

On iPhone 7 now and it's blazing fast, I love it. Always wanted to love Android but having owned 3 Androids and using one regularly for work I still prefer iPhone over anything.

Fi looks cool, prices seem decent but did some math and not really cheaper than my fam plan w/ 15GB on AT&T

    Re: project fi

iphones are 2, maybe 3 years behind the tech curve. Hardware is outdated, screen to footprint ratio is so poor that it's comical, screens themselves are poor with ultra low PPI, cameras are mediocre, no wireless charging, no waterproofing, no always on displays, you can go on. Go to bestbuy and look at a Samsung Galaxy S8 - pick one up, feel it in your hand, and then pickup an iphone right after, and you'll get it. iphone 8 better deliver, or Apple is in trouble, considering a disproportionate slice of their revenue now comes from the iphones. Their software business is in bad shape, ipads are not selling, and computer line is starting to lag behind as well. If you've got Apple stock, now is a good time to cash in and get out.

Anyway... Android sceptics need to give the Pixel a try (if you can even buy one, since waiting lines are long). Rick Osterloh the product manager is a genius that Google brought in house after their Motorcola acquisition and he's done an outstanding job. The phone is great in every way, defies every negative Android stereotype, and the camera is beyond spectacular. I'm a smartphone camera enthusiast, and have played with nearly every modern smartphone camera. Google's "HDR+" post processing in the Pixel beggars belief - I did a comparison of photos that were produced with exposure blending in Photoshop on a desktop computer (fairly advanced processing that requires a fast computer) and those shot in full auto with the Pixel - the Pixel easily manages to produce better photos on the fly. Solid, solid phone.

If only they had an OS as awesome as their hardware.

Obviously a matter of taste/preference, but I find Android obnoxious to use (I also have used most of the latest phones and use Android every day)

I do agree the iPhone 7 was an anticlimactic release and the 8 better step up. But compared to the 6, it is much, much faster.

Besides, this thread is about being cheap. Saving money. Being bleeding edge and thrifty is NOT related.

WTF is the point of saving $$$ on a plan when you have to buy the newest $650 phone every year?

ehhh, why can't you do both? Saving money and being thrifty can co-exist with high spending. They do not have to be mutually exclusive.
