You can use an iphone on Fi, but two things - a) you will be limited to Tmobile's network only, since the phone won't have the antenna bands for Sprint or US Cellular (google's phones have all CDMA and GSM bands). b) there have been rumors that google kicks you off Fi if they notice, though they are rumors only.

Fine, buy a cheap used Android phone that was all the hot shit last year and use that.

The need to always be the one with the newest phone will leave you frustrated and broke. Technoenvy is not worth it.

BTW, whatever Smutty uses is the worst phone made. Just cause we're being completely obtuse.

Weird, over the past decade+ I've had 3 generations of iPhones. One fixed under warranty, one I gave to a friend after I upgraded and I still have my 6.

Didn't realize they were shit.... they use the exact same battery tech everyone else does that is crap after a couple of years. I actually didn't even realize they were replaceable till perusing this thread! For some reason I thought the 6's on you couldn't replace them, but you can... for a whopping $20.

Got a new battery on order, already have a new screen (I have a cracked one, but it's minor and doesn't really bother me) and figure I'll replace both on my own for ~$80 in parts and I'm sure it will have zero problems going another couple years.

This bears repeating and is true for Android devices as well. I got my Galaxy S5 shortly after the S6 came out for a touch over $100. Late last year, my wife found herself a used S7 for $125. There are so many people out there that want the latest and greatest that there are plenty of perfectly capable 1 or 2 generation old phones available for reasonable money. You just have to look around.

Nope, unless you make a new purchase, all your replacements fall under the original warranty, or 30 days, whichever is longer. It appears Google is being nice and replacing 5X units out of warranty that were purchased through Google Fi though, dunno how long that'll last.

On iPhone vs 'droids, my iPhones have been rock solid, but tied to one carrier. Coverage at Boxshop is CDMA, at NHMS there is both but the CDMA is only 3g at best currently so for my intended goal I either need dual phones or a Fi style service. Additionally, there isn't software to do what I want on IOS so... I'm still researching. I would love to see a Pixel like phone come out in an iPhone 4 or smaller form factor. I don't need or care about a giant high DPI display, but I do want all the RAM and CPU...

I'd never claim they're the "best," from a hardware perspective. What they *do* have is better hardware integration, fewer "buggy" issues, and customer service that is light-years ahead of anyone else.... all while being easier to use.

    Then stop listening to assholes.

iPhones do some things well. It's a decent product. Same with Android. Working in Tech makes you realize just how irrational most people are when it comes to computers/phones. They have no idea they could do everything they dream of doing on something 1/4 the price. But instead, they listen to whoever shouts the loudest about the Windows vs Mac war, or the IOS vs Android war.

This isn't a sports team to blindly 100% support a side without ever acknowledging deficiencies of your preference. Apple products have their pro's and cons, just like Android devices do. And Brady sure as shit knew those balls were deflated.

I have Fi with 6p freaking love it never had boot loops. Go the extra 200 on the 6p, 5x battery is garbage. I have had it for a year now. No problems, I havent run into any issues there. Huge plus for me is that it a world phone 135 countries.

update: filled out my replacement "purchase" link yesterday (5/3), it shipped today (5/4), with an expected delivery tomorrow (5/5) by 8pm

I forgot what half of my apps were...pics were all backed up, texts will be lost, but the thing lost that sucks is the barcodes for all my grocery/rewards/gym membership cards that I threw out after scanning them all in

1 year back/older model sounds good to me - so a new/used iphone 6s is more reasonable at the $330ish range

maybe I could just the 5x until I get an iphone 6, then sell the nexus for a couple hundred to buy the iphone

I'm fed up enough with Nexus not to bother with the other models if bootloop risk exists

What did you use to scan in the membership cards? Doesn't the app backup the data to the cloud

i've been on fi for 2 years and just got the wife on. i love it with a few gripes. it's fucking cheap, i travel a lot but am usually on wifi so i pay for 4 gigs and rarely go over. i have a 5x, my first one bootlooped mothers day weekend but they shipped me a free one in 24 hours. the battery is meh on the 5x and i wish it was bigger than 32gigs but that is my only complaint. i will wait for the new pixels to come out and probably get one of them.

Just bought an xfinity mobile phone. Still testing it. They use VZWs network (plus their own Hotspots). Cost is $12 / GB or $45 / month for unlimited (for an xfinity customer X1 customer).

Coverage so far (literally 1.5 days) has been very consistent with my old VZW coverage. Much better than my fi coverage in the sticks. Dealing with all of the LG BS on the LG Power X kinda sucks. They offer a bunch of iPhones and some Samsungs. I'll soon be playing sim swapping games even though it isn't officially supported.

Cool, keep us posted. It's an exciting time (for customers) in the cell phone carrier space. My girlfriend just switched out of fi back to AT&T because she wanted the S7 Active, and AT&T cut her a $40 a month for 6gb deal. Looks like the traditional carriers are already starting to respond to the MVNO pricing threats.

I hope to God that Comcast's cell phone customer service is better than their internet customer service. Comcast broadband customer service is the single biggest collection of unfriendly and useless bitches in the entire call center universe. Not to mention the sneaky games they play to hike up your monthly fees without you noticing.

I thought "hey I don't use a lot of data and I have wifi at home" would work...no it doesn't for my lifestyle. I think I stream a lot of music, use navigation for work, and occasionally watch videos....usually paying $50-60...watched it creep up to $80 every now and then and last bill was $149

5x battery life does suck...100% charge, got in the uber by 11pm, home by 2:30am and it was at 40% just using snapchat and uber...I have to use the battery protection mode from the moment the charger is unhooked to make it to nearly a full day at work. I've gotten into the habit of bringing a charger with me and I just got a separate charger bank.

going to switch to iphone 6 with a pre-paid service...$220-$270 on the bay of fleas

didn't go to Mexico once either since I got this phone

I forgot about this thread. Just got the wife a Pixel 2 and Project Fi. The signal strength is impressive. She actually gets a signal in our VZW/ATT deadzone. Not to mention it cut her costs in half coming from ATT.

    Re: project fi

have been contemplating it awhile...this is what I've concluded (for myself): the price point on flagship phones is $750-$1,000...expect to discard/trade in and spend additional $500 after trade in for newest flagship 2 years later.

I'm sure I'll get there eventually. From cars to phones to bikes I've always purchased used outright but the quality gradient is starting to get to me. So the last time around, I ponied up and spent $350ish(?) to get the Nexus 5x brand new on project Fi and it boot loop pooped just under 1 year, and the newest one I received under warranty isn't being supported. Battery life sucks and it takes 1-2 minutes to post a SnapChat.

Iglu sums it up for me most accurately: I don't need the latest/greatest for what I do...a 6 or 6s is more than adequate and only $200. Even if the trade in value is next to nil, I can buy a iphone 7 or 8 in 2 years for hopefully $200 and repeat. I do that for laptops (although they are becoming obsolete), so hopefully I can do this with phones to minimize my "lifestyle inflation".

    yeah I dunno

    Project Fi bills:
    -$82.47
    -$82.55
    $62.47
    -$79.30
    -$83.97
    -$149.84
    -$90.29

    7 month average: $90.12

    6 month Excluding $149 outlier: $80.17

I guess I'm just lifestyle inflated

iphone has been intermittently twitchy...hitting backspace on the keyboard occasionally decides to be a rapid fire M or space...prob why it was a refurb. Battery life also isn't that great...battery protection mode by 2-3 o'clock at work (= hardly using it). Going to try a $26 battery case on amazon so I can go a full day at Disneyland or moto ride with GPS
