    Re: project fi

So here's a fun question... I didn't reread the thread though so it might have been answered.

I'm VERY interested in swapping to Fi. Sick of paying a ton for unlimited data on VZW.. I'm at about $120/mo for unlimited plus financing the phone, though I don't mind just paying the phone off. I have an iPhone 7 which isn't supported. I just chatted with the live chat on the Fi site and they were actually willing to talk about it, and said I'd only have access to the T Mobile network (which is fine), and I'd lose visual voicemail (which I don't care about). I'd just have to activate a SIM card with an approved phone then put it in mine.

Anybody done this? I've had VZW since I was about 16 with no issues beyond cost (they throttle hotspot data after 15 gigs too, but that's understandable) so I'm a little paranoid about switching.

iphone has been intermittently twitchy...hitting backspace on the keyboard occasionally decides to be a rapid fire M or space...prob why it was a refurb. Battery life also isn't that great...battery protection mode by 2-3 o'clock at work (= hardly using it). Going to try a $26 battery case on amazon so I can go a full day at Disneyland or moto ride with GPS
Or replace the battery. It's like $13. I just did mine.

Battery Tender USB adapter is like $10... add a charging cable/mount and ride for days. Works great for me, plus I can charge my bluetooth speaker with it while motocamping.

    hmm...also doesn't look very hard

    https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+...lacement/29363

okay I'm down...still cheaper than an technoenvy X

edit: ordered ~$15 w' tools on amazon...reviews for the $20-$22 items state that it's the same tools in all the kits. So just get the cheapest one. Spent the day at home using browser/data and it would drop to 50% battery within 2-3 hours Reviews say the replacement battery does the trick, no prob.

planning on adding this...but with a relay to the headlight...had too many dead battery situations with an EFI V Strom that I don't want anything else directly hooked up unless I unhook it after

depends on how much data you use...if it's going to be a lot why not just go to Tmobile and use their unlimited plan?

if you're a data heavy user, the pay-as-you-use setup for Project Fi can lead to some expensive monthly bills

Makes sense. I just tend to unplug anything from it unless it needs charging while off the bike, and if somethings been charging a while keep an eye on the voltage meter. The Multi is a pain in the ass in many ways, super convenient/awesome in many others.

I used to be a heavy user but not so much anymore. One thing I like about VZW is I can up my plan while traveling, then drop it back when I'm not... I tend to do at least a mini vacation every six weeks or so (first world problem). Beyond that I'm on wifi at home or work 95% of the time.

I got pissed when I forgot to up the plan while in VT during the Olympics and used it as a hotspot to watch some events online. That bill sucked.

    Simple mobile.

$75/mo for 2 lines of unlimited.

I'm going on my co-workers plan next month at simple, as it's only $25/mo to add another line of unlimited.

Just looked it up... better coverage and apparently I can just swap the phone over no problem. Interesting.

It's on ATT's network. Plus if you pre-pay for 3, 6 or 12 months at a time, the rate gets lower.

    - - - Updated - - -

You can pick up the SIM's at WalMart. Or just order online and they ship it over in a day or two.

    Re: project fi

Okay I can’t do it anymore...Groupon iPhone 6 refurb not recommended!

-keyboard spazzing out: randomly hits buttons near the junction of the keyboard letter M and space bar. I fiddled with all the settings to no avail. When it happens I have to either turn screen on/off (sometimes 3-4 times in a row) or restart the phone. I can’t get past this.
-battery life drain 1.5% per minute with use...5 hour battery life. Bought a replacement battery and a battery case. Not sure I even want to finish it at this point.
-gps has never worked well. Added google maps...location did not keep up with movement. Dot always drifted off the line and never told me turn instructions . My only hope was google map the directions and screen shot the list.
-Signal wise - if I don’t go outside my house, call will either fail completely or people can’t hear me 90-95% of the time. 1-2 bars throughout most of SoCal. Stepped outside ace hardware in Long Beach (middle of city) and no signal at all. Was about to make a couple thousand dollar purchase for parts on a rental and needed to ask the contractor a question. Text failed. Tried again -10 mins later, still failed. Stepped outside, restarted phone, 1 text sent, 1 did not, then no signal. That was the last draw. I can’t get past this.
-WiFi can barely hold onto a router signal one room away. My nexus 6x and laptop have no problem

Talked to some friends and they said do not buy a refurb...do not buy a used phone. Buy a brand new iPhone 7 or 8 or X. Way more than I want to. It’s worth a ttr125

Iglu - how about a new iPhone 6s?

They are $450 ish...sell the refurb + battery case on flea at

    I wouldn't buy a refurb.

6S does what I need it to. Just replaced the battery again to get back to 1-2 days before needing a charge.

Unless you’re concerned with what people think of the size of your phone, buy an iPhone SE.

    It’s basically a 6S in 5 packaging. I prefer the smalle phone.

    By people you mean me!?

I agree - why do I have to spend so much for basic reliable cell phone functionality?

    So far I have:
-bought an $60 phone plus month-to-month with Virgin mobile for $45/month. It would barely run google maps. Had to re-start and wait 5 mins and still not work
-switched to $90 phone but even running basic apps it had memory issues...they did not make it bigger storage wise
-then ponied up and got fi with a nexus 5x that slowed down boot looped and not supported by google
-now $200 refurb iPhone 6 sucks (see above)

All I want is a phone that can work as a phone (have signal, make calls and texts), browse the web, have a working Navigation, and can handle Snapchat/Facebook/instagram. Seems like minimum price is $500 to do that

Yes, I use a lot of data

The 32GB Moto G5 Plus is currently discounted on Newegg for $170. Add a 128GB SD card to that for $30. I doubt you'll ever need more space than that. Then get a $35/mo 5GB plan from Cricket or Straight Talk.

Also, stop streaming with GMaps. Download/cache the areas you typically ride and want offline access to. Or move to a 100% offline maps program, like Locus Maps Pro with downloaded offline vector, satellite and/or topo maps. You can use offline navigation with BRouter or Graphhopper. BTW Locus works fantastically for adventure riding.

If you stream music, use an app that allows cached content. Pandora and Spotify both allow caching content. I myself listen to podcasts, all of which are downloaded and stored on my SD card.

And FWIW, all those social media apps are garbage. They chew through data like there's no tomorrow. If you need to use them, use wifi.

    Re: project fi

I already committed to buying an iPhone 6s new..I will guinea pig that for 6 months to a year....if that fails I will try the moto with straight talk!

Just getting a little fed up with the cheaper stuff...seems to work great for everyone else then the one I buy sucks beyond belief for a specific reason that doesn’t apply to anyone else (boot loop? Since I live in the next town over - no signal, Etc.)

Edit: went to two mobil shops...one place said the 6s wasn’t worth it because when the next phone came out the 6 would not get supported(?). Kind of felt like an up sell or an opinion...he also recommended a Samsung Galaxy instead. Again, upsell.

Second place sold me a 6s ($530ish with tax)...but they only had 32gb...the backup of one phone and install/update of the contacts/apps is pretty easy although takes a little time sitting in the store while that happens. No SIM card swap...they activated a new sim. They offered me $40 as a trade in on the old phone...I will keep it in case of emergencies (happens once per year for me)

Good thing so far - I walked in with 1 bar on the refurb. The new phone already had 4 bars...so hopefully the connectivity issues are solved and it will work when I need it. Inside the house, side by side the new phone has full WiFi signal (3 bars) while the refurb has 2 bars. New phone has 2 bars of signal where old phone only had 1 bar...still not a full 4 bars so we will see how it works on a performance standpoint when I really need it. Kinda okay news is the faux glass screen protectors I got for the 6 works on the 6s and my battery case hooks right up. But those parts are $10-$25 on Amazon.

    Just make more money, right?

Update - brand new 6s has been stellar...better signal everywhere...runs super smooth and fast...actually sends text messages/makes calls with hardly any interruptions (only stall -sending multiple pics)...web browsing no problem, battery life pretty good and with battery case can go 24-36 hours. I went to Disneyland and hammered on the social media apps and only used he battery case for one charge in the later afternoon...no external chargers necessary. GPS able to figure out my location no problem.

So ya...I am lifestyle inflated lol. $500 phone every couple years.
