    Got pulled over

So I was coming home from Palmer on thursday.
Im on 495 cruising along at 70ish and passing cars. I come up on a mass statie whos doing the speed limit (shocking i know).
I pass him and he slides in behind me and lights me up
    *a bunch of bullshit happens*
    I pull over.
*a lengthly convo happens that i am happy to share if anyone cares*
After our discussion i learned some shit that others may find pertinent
-Vehicles towing trailers arent allowed in the left lane
-vehicles that weigh (not rated) over 5000# are prohibited from left lane
-trailers rated for over 5000# need a permit

Dont break any of these rules near Lawrence if you arent white, unless youre looking to have your 4th amendment violated on a technicality.

    Re: Got pulled over

Was driving the ambulance for 4 years with regular plates. Never had an issue.
Coming home one day right by Lawrence I get pulled over. I was driving 60 on cruise control in the right lane and it was around midnight. Statie walks up and is asks for reg. He goes howcome you don't have commercial plates? I go for what? He responds for this vehicle. I say the RMV registered as passangee and it's not used for business. He says so what do you use it for. I say recreational activities. I bring my bikes to the track, you can check them out in the back. He says that won't be necessary. Comes back 10 minutes later and gives me a ticket for improper registration and tells me the law states that in MA any vehicle with 5 or more wheels touching the ground must have commercial plates. Went to the RMV the following week go new plates, appealed the ticket, won. Still lost half a day driving to that shithole and $25 for appeal fee.

hes in the middle lane (lane 2), i am in the left (lane 3) actively passing doing 70ish. i pass him. he slides in behind me and lights me up. i move to lane 2 and he shuts them off and speeds by me.
then he goes from lane 3 to lane 1 in one move.
due to this, the car that im now behind is doing 5 under the limit. so i move back over to lane 3 to pass him. the statie slows down and moves from lane 1 to 3 behind me and lights me up again.
i move back into lane 2 and he follows me to the shoulder.

    convo went
cop- why are you in the left lane
    me-umm...passing people
c-you cant be in the left lane towing a trailer
m-theres no sign that says that
c- we cant put up a sign for every law
m-then how am i supposed to know then
c-youre in MA, its your responsibility to know all the laws. you shouldve got the hint the first time. license and reg
m-i didnt know what the fuck you were doing
    m-*hands over paperwork
    c-where are you coming from?
    m-palmer
    c-what were doing there?
    m-recreating
    c-*reading reg
m- i know trucks cant be over there..
    c-this is a truck
    m-no its not
c-says here this weighs 5700 lbs. nothing over 5000 lbs is allowed in the left lane
m-seriously? so every full size truck and suv in the left lane is illegal?
    c-yes
m*looks left to see countless vehicles in left lane
m-youve got a busy night ahead of you then
    c-well we dont enforce it
    m-thats ridiculous
    c-*walking away
    c-you shoudnt have been passing
m-oh, so now im not allowed to pass either?
cop walks away. while hes gone im scouring the web for these laws...i still cant find them
c-you got a permit for this trailer?
    m-a permit? ive got reg.
c-anything over 5000 lbs needs a permit and this is reg'd for 7000 lbs
    m-what?
c-im going to give you a warning for these
    m-ok.
c-stay out of the left lane
m-tell me more about this permit. what do they cost? how long are they good for? where do i get them?
c-i dont really know all that
    m-shouldnt you know?
c-look, youre near lawrence, the largest drug spot in new england. trailers like this loaded with drugs come through here all the time. the permit thing is just a way to search trailers. im not out here to write tickets. im out here to get drugs.
    m-ok

Everybody that tows should know that trailers are not allowed in the left lane on a three lane highway, that's a really common law and there are signs for it on 495. The other stuff about 5000 lb limits and trailer permits sounds like BS to me and I could find no laws that pertain. See my search of MA statutes that contain "5000": Search Results for: 5000

Sounds like a typical asshole statie on a fishing expedition.

I've never heard or seen anything that says we can't tow in the left lane either.

And yeah, that could have gone way worse with some of those pricks. Out of all my interactions with them I've only met one who I thought was an actual human. Ironically he was the one who had a legit reason to lecture me but took the high road.

Having returned from palmer as well pulling a trailer in the passing lane, I had to search to find where MGL restricts. So far, I have found only this:

Section 4C: Heavy trucks; driving in right-hand lane on multi-lane highways

Section 4C. On any highway with more than one passing lane in the same direction, heavy commercial vehicles, except buses, shall be restricted in ordinary operation to the right-hand travel lane, and in overtaking and passing shall be restricted to the next adjacent passing or travel lane, and shall not use any other lanes except in an emergency. For the purpose of this section, heavy commercial vehicles shall be defined as those in excess of two and one half tons used for transportation of goods, wares, and merchandise.

well, we now know where 5001 pounds comes from, 5000 is not in excess, the gray area is goods, wares & merchandise

I've got a Class A(with every endorsement but passenger ) and I didn't know that about the lanes, but take it with a grain of salt. I'm not a real truck driver by any means. I got my CDL via a military waiver because I drove trucks on active duty. I still drive class B fuel trucks on base, but it is very rare that we have to go on a public road, and even less likely that I would actually attempt to pass somebody with one of those beasts.

i will say that ill take the heat for the left lane travel as ive been through states that prohibit it like NY and NJ...i know this because its posted. on 495 though there is NO signage other than "NO TRUCKS". anyone with common sense would never assume that meant a tacoma.
the 5001 GVW is fucking bullshit too. i could understand a 5001 load capacity but not a GVW, let alone private use vs commercial.
the only trailer permit shit i can find is for trailers over 10k# and/or over 8.5 or 10ft wide. im neither.

I always thought it only applied to large vehicles, which is apparently the case. I assumed vehicles requiring Class A. And if your trailer is too heavy or sketchy to be making reasonable passes, then that indirectly means you're out of luck.

The officer's comments/beliefs about weight seem like they'd apply more to actual weight than gross weight rating (GVWR), and the officer seems to be using gross rating to conclude he's over and requires permits. It's always surprising how many people don't realize the difference.

SVracer, no offense, but you PASSED a cop, weaved in and out of traffic pulling a trailer and gave the cop shit when he pulled you over?

Knowing not to pass staties or mouth off when you get pulled over is common sense. The conversation you typed up is totally ridiculous, I can't believe he didn't write you up.

Pulling you over wasted time and opportunity for him to find a true case for drugs. Sucks to feel victimized. I'd be pissed. You got no ticket because you didn't do anything wrong. Sounds like boredom and frustration on the staties end.

Mass tries to fool you with just using the word "trucks" prohibited from left lane. Trucks has a lot of meanings in the eyes of the DOT...over x gvw, more than 4 tires, 3 or more axles, etc. I always thought it was common sense that trailers are not supposed to be in the left lane, but I'm in Rhode Island where the signs are clear saying "trucks, buses, campers, trailers prohibited from left lane.

In short, you hook a trailer to your car or pickup, you become a truck.

IDK. I smoke folks in the left lane quite often pulling the toy hauler. Never even considered it breaking any sort of law other than the speed limit. Shoot I've followed staties in the left lane on I90 in both NY and Massholia.

Hell. A Ford Exploder cop car has a GVWR over 5K.. They should not be in the left lane.. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

The MA speed law says speed shall not exceed X for Y distance. So technically you can exceed the speed limit while passing a cop.

The distance is 1/8 or 1/4 of a mile depending on if you are in a thickly settled district or not.
