I'm dumbfounded at the amount of people who don't know that you cant pull a trailer in the left lane of a 3 lane highway. Dumbfounded.

Why would the majority know that? The literally tens of thousands of times most people have passed the signs on interstates that say "No trucks, buses or trailers in left lane".

I'd take that as semi trucks.. not a personal 5x8 trailer..
Its been a while since I read the mass, CT and NY motor vehicle rule book.. I'll see if I can get those done this weekend

For the same reason I and apparently others thought 'no trucks' meant heavy commercial vehicles, I also thought 'no trailers' probably had the same context.

Do you think 'no trucks' means you can't drive a Tacoma in the left lane?

    Edit: Got beat.

Only if it’s pulling a trailer.

Contradictory... No trucks is no trucks..
So the question is valid... It doesn't say no trucks with trailers..
At the end of the day it was a convenient excuse to pull someone over..

A Tacoma is not registered as a truck. Its registered as a passenger vehicle, just like a car. "no trucks" DOES mean heavy commercial vehicles. "no trailers" means, erm, no trailers! That would be a wheeled vehicle that has a plate that says "trailer". The clues are all there.

and 15 MPH over in the passing lane pulling a trailer is bad enough. Passing a statie also? LOL. Oxx, you cray-cray.

If you have a "pan" plate, youre NOT a truck in the eyes of the highway department.

    Re: Got pulled over

No horse in the race but presenting a situation that would be open for interpretation.

Say I were to own a 1 ton dualie pickup truck which by default is required to be registered as a commercial vehicle in MA. Is that vehicle prohibited from traveling in the left lane when not towing a trailer? By the interpretation that some who have posted here believe, that type of vehicle is not allowed purely due to having a commercial registration.

The ambiguity comes in the definition of "Truck" and "Trailer". Not everyone understands what the qualifiers to be lumped into those two categories are and the DMV doesn't go out of their way to make it any clearer.

I never thought of it like that. It makes sense, but then I wonder how you'd define 'truck'. Al commercial plates are the same, right? They don't make a distinction between truck or commercial light weight vehicle.

For the record, has anyone even confirmed if such signage or law exists in MA? I can't find it in law. I did find the text with respect to 'heavy commercial vehicles'. Section 4C

Sign doesn't say 'no commercial vehicles'. But it is a little odd when they don't differentiate. You'd think the sign would just say 'no vehicles over x lbs' like a bridge warning.

That's what I would think.. I couldn't find the Mass law either but came across Washington and theirs specifically said anything over 10k lbs I believe

thanks dad. ive got some experience in getting pulled over, getting tickets, not getting tickets and fighting them in court. ive been let go for doing nearly double the speed limit because i know how to conduct myself when necessary.

theres no sign to say otherwise. you know, the sign you keep saying that says "no trailers". i know because i look for them whenever im towing so i know where i can and cant be. those signs dont exist on the roadways i traveled. i also wasnt doing 15 over as you suggested in another statement. 5 over.

im dumbfounded that people think the center left turn lane is there to help you merge into traffic and yet people do it daily...everywhere.
im dumbfounded that people dont know that you can drive in the breakdown lane during certain times of the day on certain stretches of highway
im dumbfounded that people in CA STILL dont know that lane splitting is legal

i cant believe this is still a point of discussion. theres no sign and its not tribal knowledge. no such law exists in NH for trucks, non truck trucks, trailers or vehicles that weigh more than a motorcycle.

if true, its not posted. difficult to enforce that way.

EDIT: a quick search says that your claim is false

Source? I haven't seen anything in MA law. The only things I've ever seen relate to weight limits, permits, size constraints, lighting, and inspection/tax/title.

AAA doesn't think there's anything different either: Trailer Speed Limits - AAA Digest of Motor Laws

    Guilty!
That's specifically illegal? So a 4 lane road, two in each direction, it's illegal to pull out into the middle lane?

I don't beleive it's a law, except where posted. However when you purchase a new trailer, one of the first things you see in the owners manual is said trailer is not rated to go over 55mph. I'm sure with you being a lawyer, you also know if the manufacturer says 55max, doesn't matter what the sign on the road says.

Yeah, right around the same time he said your house shouldn't be warmer than 65. Both cuz of the energy crisis. Then later, Sammy Hagar weighed in about the speed limit...

    Common sense dictates :

You " Do Not Pass " marked police cars .

Highway, secondary , or on a country lane , it's a respect thing.

its a left turn lane. not a merge lane.
and technically, its marked (painted) as a non-passing zone so even if traffic is stopped youre not supposed to pass people in that lane. dumb, i know.
im not saying havent done it when i need to. but yes...it violates traffic code.
