    Re: Puppy

All this talk about dogs is making me miss mine even more. Since your good to go to you mind if I interject with my own question instead of starting a new thread?

Try to make this short and sweet. I get home in March and then I am re-sttioning to Fort Lewis, WA where I am buying a house close to base (literally 10 minute drive from the hospital, out the gate to the house, was stationed there before and know the area well). I have 4 year old (in Feb) male pit bull who my father has been taking care of since I left. He has lived with other dogs and is extremely friendly with all dogs, male or female and regardless of breed. My question is this. I want to rescue another dog and get him a playmate but I can't decide if I want to get another pit or a different breed and if I should get a male or female. Some of the other breeds I would love to own are a bull dog, boston terrier or maybe even a lab. But then again I REALLY love pits.

Thoughts from owners with more than one dog, same or different breeds would be hugely appreciated.

PS-congrats on your puppy, she is adorable and I like the name choice!

    Re: Puppy

We just added an 8 week old (10 weeks old now) to our 1 year old. Both German Shepherds - a male and a female. Bottom line is do what YOU want. They're dogs and 95% of the time they'll sort their own shit out...

We couldn't be happier with our situation. This is the first time we've been a 2-dog household & I can't believe we haven't done this before. It's an absolute blast! Yeah, they have their moments and some things are 'double' now. But it was well worth it for us...

The problem you will find (or at least we did) trying to get a lab or other higher energy dog with your pit is that pits tend to get pretty lazy as they get older. We have a 5 year old pit and got a boxer that was 9 months old and she made him miserable because he wanted to play for 5 minutes and take a nap and she wanted to play all day.

Then, a guy my husband worked with had to get rid of a 3 month old female pit puppy, so we took her. For the first year, she played with the boxer nonstop, but now she's as lazy as the male pit, so they play tug-of-war for 10 minutes and then nap, which resulted in us getting another boxer to keep our boxer happy.

I do know that our male pit loves bull dogs and other fat, lazy type dogs. Higher energy dogs annoy him.

Of course, Yamaha was an option
My aunt is begging me to name her Ruby, oddly enough she got the name by looking at the color of my R6 on Christmas day.
There were a few names I picked from the non-common dog names lists that I thought were cool dog names, Falcor, Simba, Rocket..to name a few.
    As mentioned, Arai

In a perfect world, this lady friend would have a second shift job, could take care of the dog while I'm at work, she'd be gone by the time I get home from work, wake up in the morning to a little and start the cycle over again

i introduced a pit puppy into the house with our (then) 10yo pit. its been 4 years now and they still get along great. maybe rescuing a similar aged pit would be the way to go. there are LOTS of Pit bull only rescues like Bad rap, Villalobos Rescue Center (both on west coast) and theres one in NY that my g/f gets updates from, i cant think of the name.

    Re: Puppy

Only a week left before I bring her home I was visiting for a few hours last night, she has quite the personality already at only 5 weeks old. Once back in their crate/box, her mission was food, and certainly seemed one of the most energetic of the litter.

Combination of her moving around so quick, and a crappy camera, it was hard to get pictures.

And even when she was standing still....

The wildlife in the area has done a number on my yard/lawn in the past 2 months.
The pup will be using the woods or the neighbors yards as a restroom

So, I have 2 more quiet nights left! Saturday morning I bring her home

    Re: Puppy

when my folks left for the summer i decided to get my first Husky. not only was it my first dog but it was a HUSKY. after reading the forums i figured they would be a handful but i considered why not?!

well! it was a lot of work and needless to say i underestimated my free time to enjoy having a pup. it really is killer knowing you have an amazing animal but you are away from it for hours on end, specially since its a puppy is when you have the bonding, training and emotional aspect of the relationship.

after a while i couldnt do it anymore so i ended up having a couples friend of mines adopt the dog from me. they have more time than i do and he is now happy and i couldnt be more grateful.

    CLIFF:
+make sure you put in the time
+crate if you plan on only being away for 2-3 hours top

there's more but remember that its like having a baby, 24/7. say goodbye to riding for the first year or so!!
