    Question for the Computer Geeks

    Yes...

You can configure a loopback interface and almost all server software will happily use it.

(And actually almost every computer/operating system configures this by default, just run your software against "localhost"/127.0.0.1 and it should work)

    Question for the Computer Geeks

    false and here is why...

Nice way to make a broad statement Joe...

You started this crap on another site now you bring it here...whats teh matter you tech docs. did not have the info you needed?

Ok..a server DOES NOT STORE DATA..ok

You should be proud of my arguement...as it is your style to the T...

A stand alone sever does not have data stored on to it....so there for in order to access the data that the server has stored to disk, you need to have some sort of a network...

I network is defined as one computer(or as you posted inyour other threads...hardware) communicating with another...

In a small infrastructure you many have disks built in(JBOD) if this is the case the SCSI buswhatever protocol is being utilized) IS the network..in which the processor of the server communicates to the disks to read and write the data... Thus a network...also in this network is your input and output devices...

Ok now in a infrastructure the server communicated to an external storage device either by being directly attached or by a SAN(storage area NETWORK). In either case you have a network...whether is is attached through SCSI cables, fibre, ficon or escon...there needs to be a configuration in place in order to make them communicatie..thus a network....

this by definition is also a network...

A loopback interface is using the serves internal network...

This is even more serious than I realized.

Bravo, you two. The fate of the interweb hangs in the balance. Only you can save us now.

    Question for the Computer Geeks

This is a vague question. Where are you trying to access the information from - the same server? If you are trying to access it from a different machine it would need some sort of network.

    Be more specific...

    Question for the Computer Geeks

    You're all fuckin wrong.

Here's what you do: You connect your johnson rod to the main female receptor. Then, you insert your interface into said receptor at a vigorous rate until the receptor acknowledges this connection with a loud data transfer. Then, you remove the johnson rod and download all over the receptor's hard drive.

Christ, I have do EVERYTHING around here.

    Question for the Computer Geeks

    Big Red,

Mystery Squid is right as per his original definition of a network as multiple distinct computers.

I think you are really reaching with saying a "server" does not contain data and then trying to call a machine & it's SCSI drive as a network. A SCSI drive & controller is not a computer system that can function on it's own.

You are trying to make huge generalizations and then at the same time be super specific.

You can't make statements like that without being specific about what you're talking about.

E.x. computer & external SCSI drive - Not a network
Computer & large enterprise storage system - may or may not be a network
Computer & Ipod on Firewire - Not a network
Computer & Ipod on USB - arguably a network

The loopback device on a TCP/IP stack is really not a network. You are simulating a network completely in software. You don't even need a network interface.

    Question for the Computer Geeks

you would understand my arguement if you were in it from the begining....

Network, defined as in the most general sense, i.e. more than two pc's, etc
This was not the original debate....

I understood him as meaning multiple distinct computers, which is the "general" definition of a network to the non-tech people out there.

Yes, a collection of objects in memory on my computer that form a neural network could be considered a network, but it sure does not match the consumer definition of a network.

Network is a very broad term... and Squid's original thing that started this argument was "without using the internet", which implies at least two distinct machines connected via IP.
