Quickest, easiest, and affordable way to buy a car for short term in MA

Considering buying a ~8-10k car for the east coast. Subaru wagon or something similar. I want to purchase a car from a place that can register and put plates on it. I am 100% okay with a fully online sale. I know I could buy a new car and get this done, but that is more than I want to spend. I also don't trust the mom and pop wholesalers to pull this off hassle free. After trying to buy my van from one, it was just bullshit after bullshit of "we don't have the title yet" or "you can't take the vehicle until you get your own tags."

Is this where a company like Carvana or Carmax comes into play?

I could get into a private party if the seller has the title in hand and will let me use their tags until I can get a DMV appointment.

At this point, we've spent over $1k on rentals, the van has a sizeable mysterious dent on the rear door, and I don't like having to handle any driving situations that involve city streets, snow, or backing up.

Carvana is the Amazon of point and click car shopping. You pay a premium for the vehicles of course, but it's as easy as it gets buying something.

Any decent dealer will do things remotely for you and you can make them drop the car off too. You don't have to buy new and you'd just eat a shit ton in depreciation in any case.

My experience with dealers is that the pre-owned vehicles they sell are nearly as expensive as the new ones. My dad works for a VW dealer and he keeps his eye out for a good car slated to go to a wholesaler, but things have changed drastically. 10 years ago those cars went to buddies and friends. Now everything is so cutthroat that it seems everyone is afraid to do favors for anyone in fear of getting fired for not hitting numbers. I'm speaking for the multi-dealership owners that plaster their name on them, which is what he works for.

Maybe I just have a grudge.

If you're that price sensitive Carvana is not the best option, they crack people over the head in the name of convenience in my mind. They'll register and drop the thing off in your driveway though.

I'm not sure what you're really hoping to accomplish? If you hate the dealer groups because of pricing etc... then you're stuck playing the game with smaller mom and pops, private parties and all the hassle that entails. You'll drive yourself nuts by trying to find a deal somewhere that will also give you the level of service you're looking for.

Plenty of mom and pops have their shit together for what it's worth, but it may be a challenge trying to find the right car for the right price at the right dealer.

Sorry, I wasn't super clear. I do not need the BEST deal. I need a car in the right price bracket. I can pay 11k for a 10k car for convenience. I don't want to pay $20k for a car, full stop - which I think puts dealers that can guarantee convenience out of it.

I know I can go to a dealer and on the same day purchase a new/certified pre-owned car and they'll get the paperwork done and get me plates within a couple of days. However, they won't have something in my price range.
I don't know if the mom and pop/wholesaler can do this. Maybe they can do it in he right circumstances, but I'm not in any way interested of going through all the leg work and then later finding out that they can't.

These are my assumptions, but I'm here to learn.

Horrible time to buy a car like that. Pricing is crazy on anything in between beater status and new.

    https://www.iracars.com/search/Used+...rice%20ASC+tm4

They have cars in your price bracket, but no clue on fair value, Buying a Subaru priced right here when we just got hit my multiple storms in a week is a big ask too.

Unless someone has personal knowledge of a mom and pop that can do all that for you I think you're gonna be SOL and either overpaying at a dealer or continuing to rent.

This is not what you asked, but Turo is a pretty fun alternative to renting from the big commercial outfits. You can get good deals and/or interesting cars that you would not be able to find elsewhere.

CarGurus is a great place to research something within a particular zip code, in a certain price range, accident free, etc... buy from larger dealerships. They’ll do a lot of the work for you. In 2013 I purchased a 2008 Passat wagon from a Hyundai dealer. Excellent experience. Great one owner car. Was $10k. Loved it and served me well. Of course, the big dealers charge something like $499 in doc fees. But, you get a car that is serviced, washed, and often with new tires. I bought my daughter a CPO 2013 golf TDI for $9k a couple of years ago. It was a great deal and I got it from VW dealership with new tires, washed, etc... I found it through CarGurus

Carmax has everything priced on their website. You don't have tio guess what they are asking and if it's priced too high look at something else.

Depending on how often you plan to be on the east coast & available storage options for said vehicle this may be another option:

    https://www.leasetrader.com/search-results

May need to do some searching, but if you can find one with no $$$down (or even better, "seller" offering a $$$ incentive to take over lease) with enough miles left on term that fits your needs may be a good alternative.

    another vote for lease trader.

Ive had 2 customers thaty brought cars from carvanna and right after delivery they blew up.
on was a 2012 chevy volt that the battery pack shit the bed 3 months into owership. carvanaa would not buy back the car or help the guy out, because he was out the the 90 day time frame. and he had to take a bath trading the car in, and we sold him a new car.
next was a 17 cx-3 that the transfer case imploded. guy had the car for a about a month, and in this case they actually did the right thing and covered the repair in full

Sav, just send you a text. Hope I have the right number still.

Lease trader looks interesting...never really thought of a lease actually. Wasn't looking for a new monthly, but could get around that.

Duration is unknown. If its a good, reliable car for cheap money - could be forever. If COVID ends tomorrow, then it would be very short term. If we decided to ship the Alltrack back from SF and keep 1 car on each coast, it would also be very short term.

We have plenty of places to store vehicles here, so that isn't a concern.

Just checked out that lease trader sight. Unsurprisingly, virtually nothing for trucks available.

I did. And it's still a year away, at least. May need something short term to tow to trackdays for this season if the (T)rusty old Tacoma can't anymore.
