Re: recommend me a bench vise

I got the 4" vise for my survey equipment bench, thinking of getting a 6" or maybe 7" for my mancave bench I got a cheap 6" cast iron, broken, in my mancave, but still usable. always wanted to replace it, but didn't know what to get, cause, affordable ones are shitty quality. paid a little more, and I can't communicate how nice this one is, hardened steel handles, 2 for tightening down the base,

my setup recommend me a bench vise-img_2330-jpg

top view, I have the magnetic jaws on it recommend me a bench vise-img_2331-jpg

I looked on craigs list, stopped at any yardsale that looked like it wasn't all outgrown kids toys & cloths, ebay, etc. when I finally bit the bullet. I looked very close at Yost vices before I settled on the Capri, watch out for Yost, they have several grades, they make good ones, but they make shitty ones too

Fuck Cast Iron, don't waste your $$
go for drop forged steel, at least 60,000 psi, but 90,000 is better

Wilton vises were great quality until about 10-12 years ago..... I wouldn't buy a vise less then 25 years old.

and people that have and old Wilton, know what they are worth, I looked at several on ebay & craigs list, well beyond my price range, but if I were going to be a blacksmith, would be worth it

Rotating head vises can be extremely handy if you need something multipurpose. Just a link for reference (no idea as far as quality): https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B015NI2BMI

There are a couple on CL at the moment. They are imports & rough...but if you can score one for cheap: who cares.

I might have *JUST* made it under the wire... I have an 11, maybe 12 year old Wilton, made here.
I have it bolted to a gusseted 4" square steel pedestal with basically no "give." Been smashing it for over a decade. Not sure the paint has chipped yet. I do use 6061 jaws, though. That could help a little

Mine looks like this, but a bit bigger (and red). At first I thought the size was a little overkill, but damned if I havenít come to appreciate the size and versatility of it.

    Wilton has several models.

The US made version is the one you want.

Look for a used Snap-on also. They are Wiltons on steroids.

I’ve seen these in shops broken in half. Maybe fine for occasional use but a vise usually gets abused and those HF craps can’t take it.

People here are talking like a $250 vise is something special: they just suck less than a $75 vise. A good 6” tool room vise is $800 to $1,000.

Bought the HF vise because it was the absolute cheapest for occasional use. I’m on the lookout for an old, US made tool room vise. Even used they’re a couple hundred.

they are not even good for the occasional use, if it is used beyond its capabilities, I remember my first vice, bought it at O'keefes ,a local discount store, comparable to HF in quality and price. I bought it cause it was only $60, broke in half, first time I tried to clamp something down. Went to a box store (VIP auto) paid $70 for a replacement, I still have it, but it has broken jaws and bent handles, iirc, I bent the handle first time I used it

this newer one I got, was purchased for repairing my survey equipment, I wanted something halfway decent, but not blacksmith type use, is it a 130,000 psi Wilton, no, it's only a 90,000 psi Capri. If the don't list the psi spec, don't bother
