    Remote car starters.

Anyone ever done one? I have been checking them out and noticed that you have to disable the stock alarm and basically install the new Alaram/Security system and use the new one that comes with the starter.

I have 2 vehicles that I want to put them in 1 is my girlfriends Hyundia Accent. 1 is my VW Passat. I've been told that the starters are hard to work with on the VW's and fuck up the engine codes and shit.

I am good with wiring schematics and think I might be able to put one in. I am just curious if anyone has. Hints? Tips? Tricks?

If the car has a chipped key you will need to "bury" one in the car

I tried to have one installed in my Passat, it was about $600 because of all the wiring you have to hack into. Sucks.

    BTW, you're a bitch.

    Fair enough.

Seriously, though - Passats are a prick to wire for remote starters. Has something to do with the alarm system and the specially cut keys. It was expensive enough that I decided running out to start the car and drinking coffee until it defrosts is the way to go.

I'm still waiting for them to come up with one for my diesel pickup.....

    Remote car starters.

I have installed a few "ultra start" units and will be installing a couple more (the wife and I both got new cars in October) this weekend. They are pretty straight forward if the car doesn't have a transponder key. The hardest part is getting under the dash to make the connections. Bulldog security makes a T-harness for the ignition that will save some time but it's not worth it IMO.

The units I have used in the past are good for about a 1/4 mile line of sight. The one I'm putting in the new cars are supposed to good for a 1/2 mile line of site.

If you're installing one in a car that has a transponder key, I'd recommend a bypass kit that operates without a key instead of hiding a key under the dash. If you do end up doing the "hide a key" trick, PM me your address and I'll send you a 556u or whatever the fuck it's called. The one "hidden key" install I did was such a pain in the ass I ordered a bypass kit for the next time.

Ya fuckstik. I'll give it another try.

    What year are the cars?

The VW might be a PITA. It looks like you would have to at least take the drives door panel off and get in there with a multimeter or test light. The car has to think the drivers door has been unlocked for it to remote start. The factory remote keyless may not work when the car is running after you remote start it.

BypassKit.com - Direct source for Bypass Kit and databus interface solutions: No Key Required <--- Look up your cars here. (upper right corner there is a vehicle selector)

You should be able to order the bypasses you need from Autotoys.com.

I'll do the accent for you, just buy the parts you need, i will also look at the Passat but the only VW's that i have tried have a mess for wires that are all the same color and test the same. I know that they CAN be done and i have done 100's but always turned away VW's because they suck and my old work told us that we weren't allowed to do them in VW's. Also are either of the cars stick shift? If so i would recommend Compustar remote starts since they have the neutral bypass built in.

PS: I think i am going to need new tires on my bike soon...

    KB,

The Accent shouldn't be any problem for someone with a little electrical knowledge and some time and patience to get done.

The Passat on the other hand........the VW tends to become an issue because of the transponder keys and various other electrical anomalies associated with the fact that it is a VW. The info you have received to this point is definitely accurate as far as that car being a pain in the ass to do. One of the last remote starts I wound up doing before I got out of that industry was a mid 2000s VW Jetta. I spent a lot of time working with the technical department of Directed Electronics trying to figure out why, even though I wired everything exactly as I was supposed to (verified through many tests by myself and others), this damn Jetta's remote start would work sometimes and then not work others. Eventually the customer wound up getting tired of the random electrical issues that were happening with the remote start installed and had it removed. My recommendation would be to not do the starter in the Passat.

    Highsider

There are many different Diesel capable remote starts out there. I personally have experience with the Directed Electronics stuff and they are fantastic with the way they work. Typically what your going to want to have happen with the Diesel is a lead being tapped into the wait to start signal that will not allow the engine to start until that light is out. Alternatively some units use a timer that is set by the installer of the unit to wait a predetermined amount of time, allowing the glow plugs to heat up and the wait to start light to go out, then crank the vehicle to start it. The one major downside to the Diesels when remote started is the high idle that they run at when started cold. You wind up burning a ton of fuel because your truck is sitting there revving alot higher than a gas truck would by comparison. With the high price of Diesel you might be better off not remote starting it.

I had one installed in my old Hyundai Elantra, and it messed up with the alarm...and the doors would automatically lock after a few seconds so you need to make sure to have an extra key hidden. PITA. I'll make sure they look into this when I have one installed on my Sonata.
