I can count the number of times I've used it over the years on one hand. It's purely psychological. I like options. I probably would never miss it, but I want it

I use it to get out of driveway/road in the winter, can't engage the lockers unless in 4Lo.

    Stuck truck. 4lo => unstuck.
    Sometimes handling a trailer.
But mostly when stuck. Especially in snow.

    Curious to see your thoughts.

For me personaly I like it, Im not towing shit (maxes out at 7K and that will be more than enough)
It basically gets 20-21 all the time.
my thoughts are if i can get better than mid size mileage and have a full size crew cab interior, seems like a win....
Why, did you see Stoneman's post he gets 20-24 commuting with a V8 Silverado, full size crew cab, I get 19-20mpg with my 18 year old V8 Silverado, and it gets 17-18 pulling a trailer

Re: Is a ridgeline a pickup?

I picked up a load of biobrick last year and the lot was pretty snowy and rough. Because the load was near (or over) the truck's capacity I dropped it in 4LO to crawl my way back to the main lot to keep it slow. I like having 4LO just to have it, but I can't say that it is a necessity in my life. It's a lot like marriage actually...

We had an old truck on the farm that had 2HI, 2LO, 4HI, 4LO. Used to put it in 2LO and point it down the field and let it idle along and load hay bales in it as it went. Get to the end, jump in and turn it around and go again. But that was back in the day that you didn't use 4wd unless you really needed it because no one wanted to get out and lock the hubs.

Re: Is a ridgeline a pickup?

2Lo is something I've always wished my trucks had. I imagine it would be epic handling a boat trailer on a ramp and such.

I guess I agree that with the automatic transmission and all the computer controls nowadays you probably don't need 4Lo. But it just seems like a silly thing to drop.

That said I also think dirt bikes should come with kickers, even if they are e-start. Starting to wonder if I'm out of touch and up on the "back in my day" schtick already.

Sounds like the bronco got it right with the 7 speed manual then...

Or does the back in the day mantra also come with I don't want a stick because its inconvenient and I actually have to do work?

4 low, with a stick, in my buddies Jeep was a great combo. Skip 1st for most driving.

Manual transmission. 5 or 6 speeds is fine. 7 seems excessive but sure. Make first a true granny and give me a couple over-drives on the other end. It's not a sportscar.
2-speed transfer case. Give me a lever on the floor please.
Manual hubs. Let me leave 'em unlocked and run 2-lo if I want.

Give me a 300 XC-W. No injection. Mix the oil yourself. Make it PDS. No e-start. Kicker and AC lighting.

And get the hell off my lawn!

I remember my younger brother's first pickup truck, it was an early 60's GMC, with 305 V6 4 speed 2wd, first was granny low, I mean low, unless you had a heavy load on a steep hill, you didn't use it

Had a CJ7 with a 4 speed. In 4 low I'm pretty sure it would just chug straight up anything in 1st.

My F100 was probably like that with the factory gears in the diffs. Now 4th works a little better on the highway and 1st is required when taking off from a stop.

Tidal swing here is 10-11 feet. In Maine it can be more. The ramps tend to be steep or they’d be really long.

So the ramps are covered with marine growth AKA whale snot. Not only have we used low range, there are times when we’ve daisy chained two tow vehicles if you have to haul at low tide.

Since we’re dick measuring 4-low, my Wrangler has a 4 speed Atlas transfer case (high range, low range, planetary input) that would net an 11.72:1 output ratio. I could engage the lowest range, out it in first gear, let out the clutch, then get out of the Jeep and walk circles around it while it crawled forward.

My Wrangler would go right to park if I tried that, bah.
