    Question "with this ring..."

doin' the deed soon, on the hunt for wedding bands. looking for something... uh... out of the ordinary, i.e. not mall-jewellery-store-type rings. already spent all my quarters trying to get 'em out of the gumball machines, thought I'd look to some of you locals for help.

any info on shops w/ unusual or "arty" type rings in the area? preferably North Shore / Boston area?

    thanx

Go to the "Jewelry Exchange" building in Boston. One big building with about 40 different jewelry business in it. It's on 333 Washington Street...walking distance from Fanuel Hall and there is a "T" stop right on Washington Street.
I have had great luck with DePrisco, but you should check out the others as well. There are about a kajillion different settings you can look at, and then pick the rock(s) your budet allows.
There is one place on the same floor as DePriscos that does all hand made settings. They are unbelievable. A very small room...about the size of a closet. If I remember right, it's right in front of the elevator. (same floor as DePrisco) Can't remember the name.
Definately worth a look...you can spend the day looking at all different options.
It's hard to beat the prices. With so many businesses in one building, the competition is great. Don't ever pay what they are asking. It doesn't hurt to mention that there are other rings you are looking at...the price drops pretty quickly. Don't be surprised to end up paying 25-50% off the first asking price with a little negotiations. (leave the store a few times to to make them sweat)

If you live out of state, you can also avoid paying Mass sales tax

i say focus on the stone first... it's a lot easier to find the setting you're looking for, or have it made.
the rock's going to be the priciest bit, unless you go with a totally encrusted band.

you can also be a pansy, and do what i did. pick a stone, put it in the normal, boring setting and be EXTRA clear that you WILL get the full price of the setting back when you come back next week to pick the setting your gal likes. (there were a couple of shops that tried to tell me they couldn't give me a full refund on a setting that sat in a box for a week. bu-bye.)
still get the surprise, and you make sure your chickie likes the setting. ;-)

(hm-m-m... these have been some helpful replies... )

seriously: thanx, scootertrash. as it turns out, my g/f... I mean fiancee... works right around the corner from the Jewellery Exchange. walked in once at lunch, was overwhelmed by the choices in the short time she was there. I'll send her on a recon of the places you mentioned... thanx again.

    any others?

go to local individual stores - they will give you better service than a big name and will be able to make a relationship with them if you continue to go there...

    or check out http://www.bluenile.com

    just my two cents

that's what I'm looking for... local stores.

neither the future mrs. bemused or I are from this area... we've checked out the places we know about (even found a couple of possible contenders), but there might be dozens more that we just haven't heard of or found yet. hoping somebody(s) here that are from the area might know of some places that fit the bill... cut down on search time a bit.

this may sound silly but - open up ur phone book - find out what ones are around and check them out - then ask around to see if anyone has had any experience when them or if there are any that people suggest! most smaller jewelry stores are willing to try and help you out as much as they can even by doing special orders and designs... make a list of questions and know what you're looking for so you can talk to someone when you go in

nope, not silly at all... that's what we've been doing.

logged a lotta miles, but most of what we've found around here is pretty standard, Zales-type stuff... or priced wa-a-ay outta our league. have found a likely candidate here in Salem, but want to look around some more before we make the final call...

fine, how about an anti-recommendation? stay away from the mall stores... way too much overhead, and crappy stock.

thank you for your extraordinary insight, consideration, and sage advice. your recommendation will certainly save me from a pitfall I would otherwise be guaranteed to tumble into.
