    You're missing the point

    There's 3 tiers:
Sold from and shipped by Amazon
Sold by third party, shipped by Amazon (chance of third-party's bad product getting mixed in to Amazon stockpile)
    These 2 are the same.

If you think that Amazon has 40 different shelves for 40 different retailers of the same model iPhone you're plain wrong. They would never have room in the warehouse for all this. Why on Earth would they have different boxes for same item? You send them 10? They mark it up as 10 iPhones came from you and throw them into the box.

And thats where the problem comes from.

If its in their warehouse and it has the same sku its going in the same box, regardless who it came from.

I completely understand the point you're making, but I think you're over-attributing the source of fakes to fulfilled-by-amazon products when I'm saying you have to consider the third option that never passes through an Amazon warehouse. I don't have the data to back this up, but I suspect it's those which are far more often the problem, but so few people are even aware such a purchasing option exists.

I agree that direct third party is probably the biggest problem.

The crux of the problem is the damn "buy" button. Everybody competes to be the main vendor that gets bought from when you click that button. Sometimes even Amazon itself is not the primary purchase that gets selected from the list. I'm not involved enough to know the math behind it but I know it used to be a big thing to compete for the button. Personally I've almost never bought from a drop down vendor.

I'm not aware of myself getting any knock off items. I may have some but none that I'm aware off.

Anecdotally I have a friend who's huge in eBay store business. Loves eBay. Will trust and use them for anything. Hates Amazon with a passion as a seller. He bought AirPods Pro from eBay and he mentioned it when I walked in with mine. We talked about noise cancelling and he wasn't happy with his. I tried his out and his noise cancelling wasn't working. Dove deeper into it and the headphones were slightly lighter than mine. Checked the box and everything was identical other than one sticker type and the font on the sticker.

He returned it but it was still amusing to experience a fake like that.

Ya, I think they could improve the system if they shaded the buy button a little differently when you were buying 'direct' from a third party. Granted that'll only help to further their monopoly by 0.002% more. As I type this, I wonder if they've kept this as an option knowing it wasn't great because it's their get-out-of-antitrust-free card.

Not to hijack this thread, but Amazon has a way to have a small (very small !) percentage of each purchase go to charity. If you log into https://smile.amazon.com rather than the usual Amazon.com, you can select your favorite charity to benefit from your purchases. It's the same Amazon and same prices. If you don't have a charity of preference I would ask that you consider Hospitably Homes in Boston (full disclosure, my wife runs it). HH provides free or heavily discounted housing to families traveling to Boston for medical care - they're the only charity of this type still operating thru Covid (much higher profile places like the Ronald McDonald house temporarily closed long ago). Small non-profits are really hurting so every penny will help.

    Crazy

Things like Nike that officially don't sell on Amazon still have a store presence that are 100% fake products that sell under official name.

If you're gonna use amazon, use smile.amazon.com and set your charity to the Karen Hornbecker Memorial Fund.

For those not familiar, the Karen Hornbecker Memorial Fund is a charity that was created by LRRS (recently rebranded NEMRR) for injured LRRS racers. So you're directly giving to local fellow riders at Loudon that ate shit and need help.

Please, click above and add it now so you don't forget! It takes 10 seconds and literally doesn't cost you a dime.

EDIT: (Sorry Bonk! Totally poaching your charity.)
