School me Martha's Vineyard

    School me Martha's Vineyard

Saturday the wife and I and her sister want to visit Martha's Vineyard.
    We have never been before.
Where should we go from? Falmouth seems the best spot.
Should we pay extra and take the car over (is that even an option)?
where should we book tickets from?
what should we visit on the island?

Lived on the Vineyard for 13 years , and yes you will need a car .

You need a reservation for the ferry , if you wish to bring your own car .

Steamship Authority - Serving The Islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket

If you are just walking on, the Island Queen out of Falmouth Harbor is fine.

Welcome to Martha's Vineyard Ferry: The Island Queen Ferry

Makes more sense to walk on and rent a car on the island , which you will need a reservation for also.

Budget Car Rentals Martha's Vineyard Oak Bluffs

Up Island Chilmark, Aquinnah , Menemsha is where to spend the day and either Edgartown or Oak Bluffs at night. ( All other towns are dry )

Edgartown is preppy , Oak Bluffs is laid back.

    For dinner go here :

    Jimmy Seas Pan Pasta

Get word to the Owner/ Chef Willie , that Timmyduck sent you .

And have a great time .....

You're expecting to just pop on over on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend with no reservations?
Expect chaos and lots of waiting.

I'm not saying don't go, but definitely do yourself a favor and go again in the last couple weeks of September/beginning of October. THATS when the vineyard is really amazing. Quiet, serene, beautiful.

    Fantasy: freaky 3 way action

Reality: you have to listen to your wife and her sister talking about their stupid fucking problems all while paying for an extra mouth to feed. That and cosmos are pricey.

You'll be on standby forever trying to get a car out there this weekend, I wouldnt bother. A bike on the other hand you can usually get a late reservation.

I've taken a bike over a couple of times, and even on very full boats (from Woods Hole) I didn't need a reservation.

Have done, can confirm. I've also done it in a VW Thing (!) which was a blast. I'm going to take the Hypermotard over some time this summer...

    Re: School me Martha's Vineyard

They used to rent scooters over there, I'm surprised no one has brought that up. Unless they stopped?

I worked/ lived a few months over there, sept - dec. I took the woods hole ferry, but there's is one out of New Bedford as well if you can't find tickets. I can see why it would be a nice place to visit, but I didn't enjoy it much personally. It's turns all depressing and sad when the weather gets cold. Sorry I can't help with better information.

    Re: School me Martha's Vineyard

    It's a cool place.

I would suggest not driving. Every time I've been there, it seemed like there was a crapload of traffic. We've ridden bicycles around most of the island as it's very bike friendly. There are a bunch of places that rent when you get off the ferry. Falmouth is only slightly better than Woods Hole and both will be a mob scene this weekend. Bad Martha is a nice little brewery.

The Grom idea is awesome. I'm going to propose that for this year. That and doing it in Sept/Oct as chipper's mentioned.

Used to date a girl who had a place on Nantucket. Ride motorcycle down. Load ferry with the bicycles, no reservation required (still true?). Park anywhere on island. Split traffic on Rt 3 back to Boston as the cars are mostly parked. Profit.

Vineyard is pretty big for a bicycle, unless you are Serious. Nantucket is a lot easier.

Martha's Vineyard, 100 great bars, 3 great restaurants, 115,000 people on a summer day and a nice breeze off the water. Do not bring a car on a summer weekend.
