Yeh, it isn't an exact science. Just spray a bit of "propellant" and turn the sparker. Sometimes its a bit tooo much spray.
I have seen a few on the internet that use stun guns as the ingnition source for multiple sparks for a better burn. I don't feel like spending the $$$$$$$. This set up works fine for a few laughs. I did notice that after a few rounds the think gets flooded and needs to be wiped out before working properly again.

As you can hear in the vid, the dog doesn't like it.

yeah, that's pretty much the same design we used when a buddy of mine & i built one way back in the day... think the chamber was a little longer though.

a cheap alternative to the stun gun is an electric grill starter. battery operated... press a button & it clicks repeatedly. we just used the press button one like yours though... damn thing shot a potato a good 3-400 yards though

    here is another vid

I have used the push button type grill sparker before, but this flint style lantern sparker works a little better. I made the mistake of getting russet potatoes, they are too wet and too long but not fat enough for the barrell so they don't fire nearly as well as the red bliss ones. I'll get some red ones for the cookout. And yes they fly several hundred yards I can clear the corn fiel dout back and launch into the woods.
