    Ski/Snowboard 2016/2017

Who's hoping for a better winter than last year's mess?
Just ordered a new set of Head Worldcup Rebels i.Speed in 185. 19M radius, 68mm waist rippers. Can't wait to get 'em out:

Ah. With the KERS thing. I demo'ed a set of the model that had that last year. They ripped. Although I kind of think the KERS thing is gimicky.
We all now want to find old 386 processors and glue them to our skis.
And by "we" I mean me.

I was wondering when this year's snow thread was going to make an appearance. Anyone else here doing any racing? I'm doing the beer league at Wachusett and will be doing some of these races too... Anyone else?

Dying for a real New England winter! Hate to put the bikes away but if it's going to be cold I want snow damn it.

Broke my collar bone at Wachusett a hundred years ago.. that was fun. Used to be a little shack in the woods kids would go "chill out" in... also fun. Haven't been back in almost 20 years. I usually hit the Snowbowl in Camden with my brother, tiny mountain like Wachusett but cheap fun.

I could use a new board this year, not sure what's good these days.

The snowbowl got some substantial updates recently. I am really hoping saddleback can get going this year or next, it's a nice alternative to sugarloaf.
Praying for some good snow, I didn't ride once last year.

Yeah, I can almost guarantee that if you drilled a hole through the KERS chips I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Instead of spending my money on a new board, bindings & boots like I probably should have, I spent all my money on a Max Pass... As much as I really need new equipment, I think it'll be money well spent.

In other news... anyone have a pair of bindings & boots they wanna get rid of?

I vote gimmick too. I can't imagine they're throwing some piezoelectric shit in the ski.

    Re: Ski/Snowboard 2016/2017

Supposedly it's a stiffness thing. Some segment of the ski stiffens and softens as the IC drives it. The kinetic energy from forcing the ski into a turn is enough to charge it. I don't know enough about MEMS to know if it's entirely BS or not. You sure can get a gyro and such into an IC. Custom silicon doesn't cost what it used to, but still isn't cheap. On the other hand you can build a pretty good capacitor from just a couple parallel plates of copper. I've seen it done in PCB design. You can probably bury that in some fiberglass resin.

Either way, the skis are nice and stiff and carve big, stupid fast turns. I almost found them too fast as I am starting to wonder if I'm going to catch a tip and wake up in the next county one of these days. I think I need a softer, more lazy ski and to slow the eff down.

Got chatting season plans with a bud today. Last year we did the 50/50 thing @ Gunstock. But looks like they aren't doing that this year. So I guess I'm going freelance and just buy tickets one at a time.

    Re: Ski/Snowboard 2016/2017

I've been on a hiatus from skiing for a while but my kids taking an interest in it and doing very well with lessons gave me the itch to get back in the game so I decided to get equipped again. There were questions about the viability of the RAMP ski company but several people I know enjoyed skiing on them so I gave them a chance. There were excellent deals on a bunch of their leftover 2015 models so I got on a pair of 189 Woodpeckers for myself and 169 Chickadees for my wife. Her skis came with an outstanding deal on Tyrolia Attack 13 bindings and I paid extra to get the Attack 16 for myself due to normally skiing with a DIN of 12. Come to find out, it appears that RAMP has shut down some time between the end of last season (when I bought the skis) and now, which probably explains why I was able to get everything for relatively short money. If they only last a couple of seasons, I'll still be happy.

Boots have always been a problem for me due to a combination of weight, strength, ability, calf size, and wide flat feet. The boot fitter I worked with tried a number of boots meant for wide feet and larger individuals and I could over flex them to the point of the ankle area starting to bulge out. Before giving up, he asked me to humor him and try on a pair of Atomic Redster Pro 130s to see if they were stiff enough. With my feet in for 5 minutes or so, my arches started hurting pretty badly. He had me take them off and he threw in some foot beds which made them feel like a completely different boot. After about 30 minutes walking around in them while he fitted my wife, he said if I could tolerate them for that long then he guarantees he can tweak them to fix any fitment issues that may present themselves in the future. I also caught the store at the right time since they were trying to liquidate their 2015 stock before closing for the season so I was able to get them for 50% off! Unfortunately they were out of everything in my wife's size so we are still on the hunt for her.

All that's left for me is to find a helmet for my large noggin. I'm reluctant to mail order anything without trying them first and I haven't found one that fit well. Anyone have any personal experience with ski helmets for large heads? I have a Shoei 2X noggin.

I have a literally new pair of DriverX boots (size 11) with some and a Palmer Burn 164 with Flow NX2s. Make an offer. Might be willing to part out. If you're ever thought about alpine, I have a mint Burton Factory Prime 160 with Bomber TD1s and a pair of Deeluxe Indy boots (size 11).

looking to pull the trigger on a pair of these bad boys, they're last years on sale right now for a steal.

I'm replacing some really old original Pocket Rockets which are still good but i earning for a new pair.

The Nordica Soul Rider Skis captured our testers’ hearts once again. “This ski is like chicken soup for your soul,” noted one, “It’s just what the doctor ordered.” Its mid-density poplar core yields a powerful, yet forgiving ride, while two sheets of carbon over the edges provide lightweight strengthening. “These skis are very playful and responsive in the soft snow and still really stable while charging the hardpack,” claimed another tester. No matter the conditions, the Soul Rider will get it done all day long. - See more at: Nordica Soul Rider Skis - 2016 - Freeskier Magazine

I have decent set of lightly used DC boots (12) and Gnu bindings that have been sitting since I did my Burton EST upgrade a few years ago.

    Yeah,
My plan with the new Heads is to run them on nice groomers until about lunch when I can swap them for a pair of Titans:

I need to get out and demo some gear this winter.

I'm skiing on these. Which are a bit long in the tooth. My buddy upgraded last season.. which means I gotta keep up.

I had a pair of K2 4's back in the late 90's that had a piezoelectric system. It was supposed to damp vibrations and convert the energy to electricity to a shunt circuit. The electricity lit up a small red LED.

No idea if it worked, they felt like any other ski to me.

Damn. Wish I had Yetti or midget feet. I'm about a size 9.5-10.

I do have some Burton boots that were so kindly sold to me by Marco that felt comfortable enough when trying them on, but alas, my feet start to go numb half way down the first run and ache super bad.

They're pretty nice, though. Scotty, if you want to give them a whirl you can. I'll double check the size. I'm pretty sure they're either a 9 or 9.5.
