Good day on the mountain today at sunapee with bassomatic. Got some fast runs in. Trails held up well and the temps made it into the 40s. Snow was firm but very carvable.
21 runs and almost 23k ft.

Finally got out and went to Shawnee - fun little mountain. The park was minimal but decent with a couple solid but mellow jumps and rails and fun stuff.

Had a great time. Conditions were super icy and I couldn't find much powder. But it was fast and smooth.

Shawnee is where I learned to catch edges as a wee one. Knew that place inside and out. Skied it back when it was just Pleasant Mountain and had the worlds slowest lifts.
Gotta get back there someday, just for the nostalgia. Small mountain skiing, big mountain drive.

It was nice - reminded me of the Snowbowl in Camden where I first learned.

Will definitely be returning, it's a one hour drive and $15 on Mondays 3:30-9:00. Well worth $15 and a few gallons of gas for me.

Ha! I've been to the Snowbowl (icebowl) a few times, grew up in Belfast.

I hadn't been riding in 2 years, went to Sugarloaf for the past weekend on a company trip and never even got on a lift. Fucking ice and brutal cold, one of the women in our party got a concussion and whiplash. Fuck that.

Right on, I lived in Belfast for a very short time. Grew up in Appleton. You must know the Blue Goose in Nortport then? Party central haha

Wow, don't blame you. Only time I broke a bone was on an icy night at wachusset (-13F). I almost left after a few hard landings but couldn't waste the opportunity to ride, it was my first time out this season!

Sunapee has a crazy deal: $119 to ski the rest of the season, and they will credit it towards a season pass next year.

The Value Pass Plus is $995 for a season: break-even is 14 week days or 12 weekend/Holidays. With this deal that's 12/11.

Can't vouch for next week, but the best powder day of my life was here, and it's pretty close.

Ragged with family yesterday Ragged Mountain Resort: Premier New England Skiing Surprisingly good and fast conditions.
No lines and very light traffic on trails. Guess the cold and wind kept others at home!

Another good night at Shawnee, was supposed to be the last Monday Madness but with the storm they might do next week too. Super cold and icy again, but fast and fun.

    Re: Ski/Snowboard 2016/2017

just got back from 2 days at sugarbush. this will probably be long.

planned this guys trip over a month ago. pure fucking luck that a noreaster would blow through on those days and dump snow.
left monday and drove to the cabin that was less than 10min from the mountain. we had all scored free tickets from going to see warren miller in Nov and then picked up a second day ticket for $25 on craigslist. cabin was $50 per person per night. bought groceries and got prepped for 2 days of awesome.

day 1 was forecasted to be snow all day, at times at 2"+ per hour, for an estimated 8-10" by end of the day. we got there for first chair and there was a soft 2-3" on top of groomed just waiting to be skiied. made our first run and it was fast. real fast. maiden voyage saw over 41mph logged. jump on the chair for run 2. halfway down i dive into a turn. throwing light powder into the air in big clouds like one of those color runs. then i hit ice. i slide and then hit a mound of snow that highsides me. i dont remember much after that except sitting there trying to see straight and then the ski patrol sled ride down.
apparently i was asleep on the mountain for about 2min. snoring included. i was asked several questions that i dont remember by ski patrol before they loaded me up. i lost about 15-20min of memory.
at the ski patrol is where i realized i actually broke my helmet on impact. that was when the seriousness settled in.
i spent the rest of the day in the lodge with a splitting headache. bought a new helmet. went back to the cabin and slept all but 2hours from 430pm to 6 am.
with my headache greatly subsided i made the very poor decision to ski on day 2.

day 2. at least another foot fell over night pushing the total to about 2ft. i wasnt gonna miss this. we decided to ski the mt ellen side on this day instead of the lincoln side
stupid or not i was out there. plan was to ski at 70% and not push at all. first run was at least shin deep top to bottom with some drifts over my knees. go pro mounted above the top of my boot (shin) was useless. rest of the day was more of the same. lots of fresh deep runs. dipped into the woods a couple times. drifted snow was nearly waist deep in places. the problem was there was no base underneath so under that snow was rocks and stumps and branches. still a blast. cant say ive ever skied anything that deep before or at least that consistently deep. i managed to get some video but i had to move the go pro all the way to the top of my thigh. ill try to get some pics up.

heard Jay got 3ft from that storm. that wouldve been epicly awesomer.
had a cat scan done on my dome today and got the all clear. i dont know if ill do anymore skiing this year. dont want to risk bonking my head again while my brain is trying to heal.

Wow. Concussions are no good, I've had a few. Sucks to lose out on that riding but at least you are relatively unscathed. I cracked my head pretty good on Monday - decided it was time to stop being an idiot and get a helmet.

The issue is "Second Impact Syndrome." A concussion is a disruption of normal brain function. When you experience one, your reflexes and body control can be affected, making it more likely you will suffer a second concussion. That second concussion is usually much more severe.

So, your decision to ski the second day was high risk. The general recommendation is 48 hours of minimal brain function: no tv, no smartphone, no reading, no nothing. Then evaluate. Dizziness, heaadache, vision or balance problems, nausea, stay in bed.

But you skied the second day and didn't hit your head, so good on ya. But next time you hit your head, don't think about the awesome ski conditions, think about Marc Savard. I coach youth hockey and lacrosse, and my son and daughter used to box, and the concussion stories we heard in training were terrifying.
    ####

Had one of the best ski days of my life today at Sunapee. One of the guys had a Garmin watch, so tale of the tape was 14.209 vertical feet, skied a distance of 25.3 miles, from 9:30 to 3:00. Great snow, cloudless ski, high temp of 33. Going back tomorrow!
