    Ski/Snowboard 2017/2018

It's that time again. I got out at Mt. Snow back on the 11th and it was the best earliest skiing I've seen in a long time. Picked up a peak pass and intend on getting in a lot of days this year. Wildcat is open and ought to be pumping out snow tonight. If anyone's up for hitting it tomorrow or Saturday, PM me.

Bretton Woods yesterday with my daughter. Bretton Woods snow conditions | Mount Washington Resort
Limited terrain but great conditions...temps in 20's, guns were blowing snow, and no lines!

I have low expectations for this season for myself. Not going to season pass it anywhere, but I may pick off a few days, hopefully.
There is talk of getting the wee one (3 year old) on the slopes. Although I suspect that may be back yard sliding on some cheap plastic boards.

Did a couple hours this morning before work at Wachusett. Place was empty and it was pretty good, but got soft early. I tried the gopro a few inches in front of the binding and up higher. The height helped reduce the snow coating the lens, but the image is too jittery mounted right on the ski. Has anyone had good luck with other mounting methods (other than helmet) for skiing/snowboarding?

Stopped by Sunapee today to pick up my season pass. It’s now RFID and includes unlimited Okemo access.

There was one run top to bottom and maybe 25 skiers. May try to hit Okemo next week.

I've mounted a camera to my pole and was really happy with how that came out. If you don't plant the pole it comes out reasonably steady.

Nice. Is there still a little shed off in the woods where the teenagers get high?

Haven't been back there since I broke myself in subzero conditions. Cool little mountain though

Snowboarded (hard boots and plates) at Wachusett today and I tried mounting the gopro just using a hat clip mount gripping the shell, but the results weren't much steadier than it was directly on skis. I like the angle down there but it's just too bouncy. Pretty good conditions. Not a lot of runoff at the last turn getting back on the lift. :-)

Okemo email this morning says they got 14-16” last night. Sunapee says they’ve gotten 14” in the last week (which means 10” yesterday). I’d head for Okemo as they’ve had more terrain open right along. But I am a hockey slave so can’t go this week.

Wildcat was amazing today. Nobody on the hill. They got a few inches last night and an inch or so came down today. Plenty of skiable, ungroomed too.

Alright i'm still very much a rookie snow boarder, have gone only 3-4 times at Wachusett.

I've got the whole week of Christmas off and was thinking of trying a bigger mountain in NH or VT. I was wondering what you guys would recommend that wont be a total shit show because of school vacation. I'm still not very good so i'd rather not crash into a bunch of little kids lol

Also has anyone been to Wachusett recently? how are conditions? I might go one night just to shake of the cobwebs

Everywhere is a shitshow during Christmas vacation IMO, and is to be avoided if at all possible. Nights at Wawa will definitely be better, and the last couple hours before closing won't be too bad . Conditions were good a couple of weeks ago (a weekday) on the limited number of trails they had. Haven't been back since. Looks like they've been blowing enough snow to open up a lot more. Between now and new years, I'm planning on spending more time tuning than skiing/riding.

I agree. If you must go, go as far away from civilization as possible, to the smaller less known places (like Burke, for example) but if you are concerned about running rugrats over, you couldnít pick a worst time to go. Itís the most expensive time, the most crowded time, snow conditions arenít ideal yet, and many people on the slopes will be crashing, whining, and crying (LOL).

Do yourself a favor, blow off next week, and plan to call in sick some weekday(s) when there will be pleasant temps, low wind, and fresh powder but not too much (for a relative beginner)...Like 6 to 12 inches. Go wherever you want as far as resorts because none will be overcrowded even on a powder day if itís a weekday, and make sure to get there well BEFORE lifts open, because it gets tracked up amazingly fast.

Thatís when itís fun as hell.

Next week wonít even be fun IMO. I probably wouldnít even go if it did dump powder next week, because of the crowds. One of the reasons Iím saying wait for some good snow on uncrowded days isnít just to be a powder snob; itís because snowboarding is no fun to learn on the ice created by Christmas week crowds, in fact it can hurt. Deep powder isnít easy on a snowboard at first either, but just enough snow to give great feedback to how you steer the board will do wonders for your progress as a rider, plus it hurts a lot less to fall AND it is so much fun you will probably get hooked.

Ok thanks for the advice, kinda what I figured. I'll just wait and hit up wawa on a few weeknights in january. Actually I found that going during sunday night playoff football was mint last year, basically had the mountain to myself lol. I can almost get a run in while they figure out is something is a catch or not lol.

If I want to hit up a bigger mountain sometime in January what would you guys recommend for a beginner?

    Re: Ski/Snowboard 2017/2018

Looks like the NH places are closer to you. I’m not all that familiar with those. Sunapee might be a fine choice. In southern VT, Stratton is good and beginner friendly, as is Mount Snow. Killington can be a bit overwhelming in terms of size and distance between places you want to be...it has a lot of long traverses that can be less than pleasant on a snowboard, even for experienced riders. I’d personally prefer Okemo, which is right near Killington if you are going towards mid VT. North of Killington they are all good pretty much.

It’s really important to go on a weekday with good snow and weather. I don’t think you can go wrong at any resort under those conditions. Likewise, they all suck when it’s crowded, icy, and bitter cold with wind or warmer and raining. Snowboarding is like surfing; the people who score are the ones who arrange their life to get it during the short window when it’s really really good...everyone else who tries to plan even one week ahead often ends up frustrated with the conditions. Last season I snowboarded something like 10 days total and 7 of them were great powder days= epic season.

Nice snow conditions at Sunapee, nobody there, showed up at 9:30 and parked 1/2 way out in main lot.

Forecast is snow 5-12” starting 9pm-ish through Christmas night.

Conventional wisdom is that Xmas is crazy, but after the terrible conditions of 2015-16, a lot of families made other plans and it’s really not bad. Today is light, Xmas is always light, stay tuned as we will be here until Friday or so.
