Daughter skied into the lifts all day at Sunapee. They got 8” on Christmas.

Current temp is 1°, forecast low at dawn -2° but no wind, sunny high 20.

Edit 7am, -7°, sunny no wind.

Rolled into upper lot at 9, minimal lines and trail traffic. Just waited for sun to come over the ridge. Sunny, high about 8 but excellent conditions.

We’ve found NOAA forecasts for Sunapee and elsewhere not particularly reliable. But Weather Underground has local weather stations. This one is on Sunapee at North Peak.

Ended up hitting Wachusett during the Blizzard. Winds at the top were crazy but I basically had the mountain to myself so it was awesome. Conditions were very good, lots of powder on top of the man made stuff. Probably will be really nice riding until it rains this week

Sunapee yesterday was fantastic. Keeping an eye on this storm... either a mountain destroyer or magic.... Thinking we get fucked.

Could be a late season skiing saver too. Solidify the base so it lasts longer in the spring.

    Re: Ski/Snowboard 2017/2018

The rain and warmer temps really had an impact at Sunapee. The 18” on the back deck had disappeared and the snow cover in the woods was down to 6-9” of hard pack. But a little snow is due Wednesday.

We went to Okemo yesterday due to 4 teenagers professing boredom with Sunapee, despite my protestations: long weekend crowd, rain/ice earlier in the week, etc. Okemo did not open Saturday until 10:30 due to high winds.

Clear day, temps 8-12, not much wind. Most of the cars in the lot were from NY and CT, with MA trailing. We saw a car from Louisiana, which was a first. Most double diamond and steeper terrain closed, many other trails roped off. Intermediate trails were packed. The single diamond runs were the best as they weren’t skied off. 13-15 minute lift line all day at the covered detachable lift. Got very scratchy in the afternoon so we were on the road by 3:15 with four teenagers who have now vowed loyalty to Sunapee.

Pretty easy drive Sunapee -> Ludlow. 42 miles and 50-55 minutes. No traffic to speak of until we got near the mountain.

hell, i just want to get a couple days in and I can't even do that.

last year couldn't find the time to make it to the slopes once and a couple weeks ago I hurt my back and tailbone when I fell carrying a 300# window and now I wont be physically able to to it for at least another month I think.

Looks like Wachusett is in the sweet spot. Midweek powder day Thursday if they don't groom it to death the night before.

Just go tomorrow night after work, it will be the best. they will groom it to death at the end of the night skiing Wednesday. Thursday will be corduroy slopes for sure.

Hopefully ski club will be canceled too. Been there on a snow night like that and it's the best time at Wachusett. Except for the fact it takes literally 50 secs to get down to the bottom of the hill there.

Not all it’s cracked up to be.

    • When I came up last night, 6” of snow on the steps.
    • Had to stoke the wood stove so it was warm enough to watch the Bruins beat Montreal.
    • At Sunapee this morning, there were at least 12 cars in front of me in the lot.
    • One of the times up Express, had to sit with another person.

I had 3 days out in Utah last week. It was my first time out west, the snow was buttery. Also I rented some dynastar legend x96 were great for everything except for going very fast.

    Re: Ski/Snowboard 2017/2018

Mount Snow today, they are doing a great job with the snow they have. We had a ton of fun. Nothing epic but the sun was out sometimes, temps were manageable, not too crowded except on that bubble lift, and the surface was plenty good. Some of the snow on the edges was actually really good. Light with good traction.

Thank goodness we didn’t get to Corinthian parking lot till 910; We noticed that the chairlift...with people on it...didn’t move the entire time we were getting suited up. We heard later there was a snafu with some detachable chairs colliding at the bottom and the people on the chairs had to be evacuated. Temps and winds were fine for riding, but as far as sitting on that chair for however long (hours maybe?) before getting any runs in, and then belaying off that lift, screw that noise, very glad we missed it.

Would anyone care to recommend a quality ski shop that would sell and fit boots for a big, aggressive skier?

We were originally going to Park City next week but it looks like conditions are pretty poor and now we're driving up to BigSky and Jackson Hole. Where were you?

Anyone got tricks for keeping a Thule box lock from freezing? In these rain/freeze cycles it’s frozen up and I had to put an electric heater to it to get it open. Going to bring it inside for a few days, not sure whether the best approach is graphite, WD40, or light grease. Theoretically WD40 would displace moisture but it seems too thin to stay for long.

Dont know where you Ski but guys here recommended Bob Skinner’s (near Sunapee) and they’ve done a great job. We had three teenagers so there was a lot more boot fitting than you might expect.

The owner is Frank McConnell, a former US Ski racer. They are very meticulous and fit a lot of competition skiers. What they have in inventory or available in your size might be a bigger challenge.

Friend of mine and I lost our condo for this upcoming weekend in VT, still looking to get hurt on a mountain trying to be younger/more skilled skiers. Recommendation for a reasonably priced place to ski/stay for a night?

NH/VT are both same drives for us. Probably do a Sat morning drive up, ski, check into room, eat, then get up Sunday to ski again before heading home.

Not local to you. But Covered Bridge Sports in Dover, NH was just this for me. My peeve is that a lot of shops fit me into boots I can flex my knee right to the floor in. Right off the bat these guys had me in something quality. I was a happy camper.

they didnt have a boot that worked for me. I ended up getting mine at Joe Jones in N. Conway which is part of the ski & sun group
