And a golf course, town beach just steps away, lift serviced downhill biking, the White Mountain Athletic Club, the town square, BMX and skateboard park. Hiking galore. But the best part is everyone is so nice and friendly. Hopefully we get to ski together someday.

Already had one human triggered avalanche out here and it is only October. Snow should stack up nicely this week, temps are plummeting we have a high of 5 for Saturday.

I signed up for 12/11 at Sunapee. The reservation process (for passholders at least) was painless. Heard from a buddy who is at Okemo today. He said it’s empty. It’s gonna be a weird season.

Covid is messing with another ski season.....

    https://www.timesunion.com/news/arti...d-15782596.php

PERU, Vt. — Skiers and snowboarders from the Capital Region, or anywhere else in New York, will have a different routine when they arrive at Vermont resorts such as Bromley Mountain this winter.

Upon getting their lift pass, they’ll have to provide their name and phone number, which the mountain will keep on record. The phone numbers will be kept on file so tracers can contact people if they are linked to an outbreak of COVID-19 after the fact.

Visitors also will have to attest and sign a statement that they are COVID-free and have quarantined for 14 days, or 7 with a negative COVID test, before they entered the state.

When they go in for a restroom or lunch break, their lift passes will be scanned to make sure they belong there.

At the Killington Resort, visitors will also have to have parking reservations before they can even get their lift passes.
Was hoping to ski in CO but their infection rate is a lot higher now.

EZ Pass lanes in NH have a cash lane at the far right. Big Brother is watching you. Might even want to shut your phone off or remove the Covid tracker that Google installed a while back.

Do you really think skipping the ez pass lanes and turning your phone off will take you off the grid?

That’s a ton of simple, right there.

I’m headed up to Shawnee Peak today.

Friday is opening day for season pass holders.

Top to bottom snow according to them.

    Let the winter begin!

Casual tour up Tuckerbrook today. Top few turns were pretty shrubby, then it got good. Some rocks were had, but all in all I was pretty happy and got some face shots.

Haven't toured Cardigan in years, but that seems to be the ticket this weekend.

I gotta pick your brain on this stuff. This may be the year I get into it and that means buying a bunch of stuff and learning a bunch of new skills. Got any resources you can point me to?

For gear: pick your flavor of splitboard, every mfg makes one now. I am very partial to Karakoram bindings but other brands have made big improvements over the years, just avoid a "pin" setup (old Voile and Spark were pin design). I've finally settled on the Burton poles. All the skins work, the high traction G3 with Spark tail clips are my flavor. I picked up a set of Burton Tourist boots but have yet to use them, normal boots are fine but they will take a little bit of a beating. A pair of shell pants with full side zips are worth the investment. I picked up a set of Arcteryx on ebay for like $150 and I've had them for 9 years now and they're still perfect. Shells and technical layers are the jam, its all about regulating heat - insulated layers usually result in it being way too hot. I just keep a puff in my bag.

If you want to do it on a budget...find a used setup and run what ya brung for the rest. My friend Andrew Runs Ski The Whites and it looks like they rent splitboards - probably the best dude you could ever meet that will have a shitload of knowledge if you stop by.

Oh, and Tuckermans is NOT easy. The amount of people that get seriously injured or die there is too many. Even the most experienced. Its just a flat out dangerous spot and you should tread lightly. I've hiked in there a million times as Mount Washington has a TON to offer, but only actually skied tucks a handful of times due to weather or conditions. Its no joke.

    Re: Ski Snowboard 2020-2021

I've always wanted to ski Tuckerman's some day... wanted to do it last year but never got out there.

Sylwia and I hiked it the day after thanksgiving & it re-kindled the desire.

Who's done it? Anyone expecting to do it this season? Would be great to have a buddy (Sylwia does ski but it's well beyond her skill level)

Nice, I bought my girl one last year and she has really started enjoying it. I have done some BC (RASTA) and resort touring. I got her an avalanche kit for xmas and want to get into more BC as does she. Shit year to pick because everyone else had the same idea. We are gonna look into the granite state alliance stuff out of black mountain. I just need to get some folks to tag along with as I'm not terribly comfortable with it can be dangerous.

Dufuq you doin to them poles?

Sunapee this afternoon. Major fail for working this morning instead of getting there for first tracks. Apparently I missed the big crowds that were there early, but that's cold consolation.
Still... pretty great conditions (if a bit late) for my first day out.

    Re: Ski Snowboard 2020-2021

Is the main triple at Shawnee (with the mid-station, that goes over Jack Splat) a fixed / non-high speed lift?
    East-side has a high-speed detachable, right?

When I was a kid the east-side was never open for year and years unless things went bananas with snow. They finally started investing in snow-making and trail improvements over there at some point and rehabed the old lodge. But the chair was an ANCIENT double and had all kinds of mechanical problems as I recall. I can't remember if they replaced that chair just before I stopped skiing there or just after. Probably just after.

Dope. Are you a skier? Much easier to get touring gear for skis.
The poles...I think its something particular to splitboarders - gotta break them down real small to fit them in a pack. This means its needs two breaking points in the poles and eventually they just wear out or snap. My SO is a rad skier and her poles are 90 years old, but barely collapse. Much stronger design.

First meeting was 1pm PST, so I did end up going to Mt. Cardigan yesterday. Snow was DEEEEP. But it was just too flat for it to be that much fun. Other than a few turns towards the top, I had to basically ride out the skin track to not get stuck in the Powder. I had to fully hike down at one point when I tried to blaze my own trail. And not a small hike down, about a mile. You can see the little squiggly as I was trying to figure out WTF to do at mile 8.25.

Yeah I ski I have a frame binding set up, been doing small stuff for a couple years. I guess that makes sense, I just break my poles on the way down not up so I was confused how a boarder does it.

Nice! That storm had some shit to it. Saw a few funny tracks on social media.

    Re: Ski Snowboard 2020-2021

Been crushing the backcountry around here. Resort has been fine for groomers but we need more snow for them to open up the terrain I want to ride there. Liftlines are basically non existent unless your riding one of the lifts from the main base area and who wants to do that? Our snowpack has a weak faceted layer that is between and inch and 4 inches thick depending on slope. Things are going to get spicy in the backcountry when the snow gets a heavier load. Lots of low angle terrain to chase while I wait for an storm cycle to flush some of that out.

    Re: Ski Snowboard 2020-2021

I skied for many years back about 20 years ago and switched to snowboarding. The last couple years I've been renting skis, and finally just pulled a trigger on buying my own. Ended up with a pair of Atomic Vantage 97Cs with Dalbello DS110 boots.

Anyways, just wanted to share about cost of service. Ski Monster in Boston seem to have the fastest and cheapest service costs. Full tune $40, mounting bindings $40 etc. Which is 50%-100% cheaper than anywhere else. Best of all you show up to your appointment and you get your skis back in 20 minutes.

now....to actually get on the slopes....
