Just installled a set on a customer's car the other day. they seemed legit. and for the price compared to other options it seemed like a good buy.

    Re: Snow tires....

FYI, distributors are starting to run out of some sizes of popular winter tires.

For our third car (Outback 3.0R) that the kids drive, needed new winters but didn’t want to spend $200 per corner for Hakka R3’s. They would likely outlast the car.

The new model General Altimax Arctic 12 (was Gislavid NordFrost 4) was $149* and the Nordman 7 (non studded) was $152. Nordman is Nokian’s discount brand: (the latest version is the Hakka 9). So that’s what we went with. We will be able to compare it with the other Outback with R2’s.

Nokian Nordman 7 - Simple reliability for varying winter weather / Nokian Tires

    * Slightly different size. FYI Tirerack was $125.50 each wth free shipping, but paying for mounting and disposal would have totaled $5-10 more than the local dealer.

    Re: Snow tires....

Only driven a tiny bit on snow/ice (driveway) but they seem good.

They do seem to hum on the highway at 70mph. Still brand new, hopefully that goes away.

In general, I find a lot of the snow tires are noisier on the highway. I think it is likely the tread pattern

I agree that they are usually noisier, I think it is a combination of the tread pattern and the rubber compounds that are used.

I don't find snow tires anywhere near as noisy as all terrain tires that many think make good snow tires, but they really suck comparatively

    Re: Snow tires....

All our cars have Nokian winter tires.

These are noisy relative to the Hakka R2’s on the others.

No doubt compound and tread design matter, but might be for a different reason, depending on which Blizzak.

Most new Blizzaks now have 12/32nd tread depth (like most Nokians). These Hakka 7 have 13/32nd.

X-Ice have 10.5/32nd. It is a very civilized and good-performing tire as you suggest, but they cost about the same as Nokians and the Nokians lasted at least a season longer. That’s why we moved away from them.

We’ll see if it goes away with a little more use: it’s not something mentioned in reviews and the Hakka 7 has been sold since 2010.

    Re: Snow tires....

I have no other snow tires to compare them to but the R3's make a small amount of road noise at speed. Definitely not bad but certainly louder than the Michelin all seasons the car came with.

My Wildpeak AT3 are quieter in my truck than the Michelin AS in my sedan. And the Geolanders on the SUV are really quiet as well, I think they are the best tires I've ever bought, wish I would have put them on the Tundra as well. As far as traction, I think the only place the snow tires I used to run beat the AT tires is wet pavement, and probably edge them slightly on icy conditions. But it's hard to tell, I've only run snows on lighter cars, not the 3 ton sleds. But that is one place you do have to be careful with the big AT tires, some are much less noisy than others.

Noisiest tires I have ever had were Pirelli MTR60s on my SV650, they were louder than my loud exhaust on the highway, competing with 4x4s with 40" mudders

So it seems when you install a set of Hakka R3s, you end up with barely any snow and 40 degree days.

We are about to get a CX5 and I really don’t like the tire size it comes with.
225/55R19. I would much prefer that in 18” even 17”. Smh. Makes tire selection and cost a pain. Also almost impossible to find a decent snow tire for it.

Just picked up a set of Dunlop WinterMaxx WM02 for a car with traction control from hell. Hopefully it will move in snow now, if we ever get any that is.

You should be getting thinner tires as well. Check out the tire rack options for your cx-5 and get 17Ē dedicated winter tire/wheel set. I do that for all my cars and itís easier and probably better for the snow. This, unless you want to get true all weather tires such as the vredstein quadratec

I still haven't mounted the snow wheels on the Audi yet. Fucking balmy down here in southern NE. I expect now I need to just not mount them at all this year, keeping the snow away, amirite?
