    Re: Snowmobilers

We've been thinking of trading in the Yamaha Phazer [4 stroke] we have for a utility sled. I'd like to be able to break my own trail, while speed is a pretty low priority.

A buddy who has a place in Mexico, ME and rides a Polaris Switchback recommended the Ski Doo Tundra over sleds like the Polaris Voyageur or

He also mention the Arctic Cat Bearcat, which they seem to use at Mt Sunapee. And Yamaha has the VK540. Any input?

Utility sleds tend to have more track so they may be better at breaking trail, but I wouldn't want to get one stuck. Unless your pulling a drag or working the sled the utility may not be the best choice, I'd look for floatation and light weight. Fan sleds may be the way to go. Brother in law has a Bearcat XT it's a tank, not much fun to ride. Also has a regular Bearcat which I think is a cheap POS.... broken shocks at 17 mikes or so. They use a stamped shock body rather than threaded to support the coil spring. I got an Indy LXT and have been very happy with it, 550 fan pretty light and has a 144" track under it. Not going to break any speed records though!

Utility sled, meaning what? Just breaking trail? Once you break trail what do you do with it afterwards? Just a trail breaker I'd go light weight longer track with a deep lug track, almost like a crossover type sled. If you're pulling drags, hauling wood with it, then your buddies recommendations are good. I'd lean toward the Tundra personally.

I want to be able to go wherever I want, basically. The utility sleds seem to have long, wide tracks and wide skis.

If railing down the trails isn't tops on your list and you don't want to set land speed records then any variation of the Tundra would be tops on my list. If money weren't an object then the Extreme would be my pick for obvious reasons. Keep in mind, those front ends are narrow and sort of archaic with that strut style suspension but it does offer that flat belly pan which does help flotation. And those sleds are pretty damn lightweight considering.

Based on the last two seasons, the two sleds we ahve will last forever. We put round 300 miles on them 2014-15, about 5 last season, and 40-50 this season.

are you going to be dooing any grooming?

a tundra extreme is a good utility sled for breaking trail
a skandic swt or expedition extreme would be good too.

if you truly want to go anywhere my first pick would be a summit 175 with a 3" track

Instead of starting a new Fred I'll ask here. Coworker is selling a 1988 Exciter and a 1990 Phazer for $300 each. Which is a better buy and why? Looking to get a season or two out of it then send it down the line?

That's going back a long way but I believe the Exciter is a 570 and the Phazer is a 485, the chassis is about identical. I'd base the purchase more on overall condition.

    Re: Snowmobilers

To confirm what has already been clarified, the Exciter is a liquid cooled 570 and the Phazer is a fan cooled 485.

The Exciter will have some power and be fun, but they aren't super reliable. They are known to scuff cylinders.

The phazer is fan cooled, super light, and will go anywhere. They aren't the fastest things out there, but they sure can be fun. They are also pretty reliable and very easy to fix.

I agree with purchasing on condition but if they are both comparable I'd take the Phazer. The power of the exciter isn't worth it when you need a piston. Besides, that kind of performance is only good on groomed trails. If you're backyard or backwoods riding you're better off with the Phazer. Given they are older machines they will likely need fixing at some point, and the Phazer is about as easy as it gets to work on.

NADA and KBB have used prices you'd expect to see at a dealer. When I'm poking around, I check those and what's currently being asked on For Sale sites and try to come up with a reasonable offer...

In fact, I'm currently looking for a post-2000 370 or 440, preferably air cooled - but that's not a deal breaker. Gotta be 1-up though. As always, looking for a deal of a lifetime...

I did miss it, I had too much to do before I went away for vacation. In Florida right now.
But I did get myself a new toy after the show. A friend of mine works at a dealership so I grabbed a 2017 leftover.Snowmobilers-2000000004-jpg
