    Sports Memorabilia

Helping my folks clean out their basement, come across a baseball in its original box. I ask what it is. "Oh, your father's uncle gave it to him when he was 5 or 6". I take it out of the box...."Mom, did you know this is signed by Babe Ruth?" "Do you think if we sell it we can pay to have the house painted?"

The patent stamp on it places it from 1930, and the signature sure looks like the real thing. Needless to say I am taking it to be authenticated asap (if real, I am pretty sure it will pay to have the house painted!!).

Not that I know anything about it but I did a quick google search out of curiosity... depending on condition it looks like you could buy a whole new house.

Yup. And if/when you get it appraised/authenticated, do NOT let it out of your site...

On the other hand, it COULD be merely a mass produced, stamped "collectible"...

Either way, protect it until you know exactly what you're sitting on!

Just call the Baseball hall of fame and speak with a curator. I did this after finding a Pre-Louisville slugger soft ball bat from the early 1930ish......She was a wealth of knowledge and was very aware of its origin. No cost.....but it was a softball bat and really had no value sadly. But does look like a museum piece. That’s what I would do....as they are an unbiased form of appraisal.

    Sports Memorabilia-baseball-jpg

Here is a picture of the ball. It wasn't a game ball because it is in it's original box (which is in incredible condition). It's been in my father's basement for 70 years! I have a friend on Long Island who collects Yankee autographs (mostly on photos) and he says this matches his authenticated autograph perfectly. We have an appointment to have it authenticated on September 9th, but calling the Hall of Fame is a great idea.

OK, well it's been authenticated as a real Babe Ruth signature. Now I need to get it appraised.

    Re: Sports Memorabilia

Since some people were interested in this, I can share what they told me during the authentication process. The ball was purchased from a sporting goods store, which diminishes the value since it's not a game ball. However, balls were stamped differently every year back then, so the stamps allowed them to definitively set this as a 1929/1930 American League ball. The signature is faded but it's in the "sweet spot" and it helps that it there is only one autograph. Apparently multiples can diminish the value.

Since I don't know much about this, I went to a baseball forum and wound up talking to the administrator who offered to walk me through the auction process. He mentioned a couple smaller auction houses that will give this more attention. He says that since this is a fairly simple item to sell, I should demand a piece of the "buyer's premium", which would never have occurred to me. So, I'll keep researching and eventually package it up for auctioning. Sports Memorabilia-ball-1-jpgSports Memorabilia-ball-2-jpgSports Memorabilia-ball-box-1-jpgSports Memorabilia-ball-box-2-jpg

Looks to be in the $10K range given all the factors.

I wonder if it would be worth anymore if it were from a bit earlier, from the "Murderer's Row" days. The late 20's & early 30's weren't stellar years for the Yanks, although Ruth was still clubbing 'em. Either way though, that's still pretty fuckin' cool. I can't wait to see what you finally get for it...

So, in the end I got $13K for it which makes my dad pretty happy. It was a private sale but I had a couple bidders. I probably could have driven it a little higher but I ran out of patience for the whole thing.
