    Re: Sprinter build thread

Visited the shop today. Driver’s side pretty much done except paint.

Right side will be finished this weekend or early next week. So basically all new metal around the bottom of the body.

There’s a dent in the RR quarter to pull out, corrosion around the windshield, and and that will do it!

Crazy low mileage, mint 144” high roof 2006 cargo with windows. Sought after and camper conversions are still selling for well over $20,000.

    Re: Sprinter build thread

Last lap at body shop. Rocker panels on both sides are done, doors being cleaned up, and yesterday they pulled the windshield. The lower windshield corners in particular are known to rust: definitely look at that area if you are buying a T1N through 2006) Sprinter. Zombie had the van repainted a few years ago so very minor problems. But because it’s the front, those problems can become big problems relatively fast.

There’s another Sprinter in the shop. Really nice dark blue medium wheelbase with all the options, corroded from stem to stern. Owner has been replacing doors at an average $700 each.

I get attached to his projects. It seems that Hodakaguy doesn't.
For those of you who didn’t follow his Unimog build.

Mine will be much, much more minimal: basically insulation and tie downs.

Looks like a 118 to me. That is a beautiful blank canvas. They even gutted it for you! No door cards, nothing. I would buy another T1N just for the 118 wheelbase option. Anything larger I would look for an 07 or newer.

Speaking of....do you have a good deal with your body shop guy? Seems like a lot of work to be sinking into a T1N standard roof. I would have just went for an 07 or any other model standard roof van at that price point (van + lots of body work). At normal prices you must be looking at upwards of 5k if you paint the whole thing too.

T1N vans are awesome, don't get me wrong, but the 118 and high roof combo are what make it attractive over the other models.

We gave them enough time they could do the project as fill in and add-on work. Its also the shop we used for our fleet and POVs. So, yes, we are getting the best deal possible, which will still be a lot. Add on standard PM which even a well-maintained but 13yo vehicle will require.

This is what we wanted so its worth it to us. 118 SR were about 9% of the Sprinters sold. The 118 high roof were about 3%: not sure Ive ever seen one.

If we were going larger wed have purchased another medium roof standard wheelbase Transit EcoBoost.

Yes, they are absolutely rare in a high roof. I just figured it was much easier to find other utility vans with a standard roof in the ball park of a 118 wheelbase. However, your connection with the body shop makes it much more reasonable.

I still haven’t seen one. There are several FS on Sprinter-Forum if others are interested.

The ad says it’s a 144 although it looks like a 118 in the pictures. No pictures are shown of the interior space, although they show it has 15” wheels.

The Express and Econoline are not quite high enough for a lot of bikes. The1st gen Transit Connect we had was high enough, but too short. While not the only stuff we’ll carry, the T1N 118 works for motorcycles.

No matter, trying to get a firm date for completion from the body shop, then I’ll order Thinsulate and the other materials for insulation. Also planning on L track for both sides and the roof.

    Re: Sprinter build thread

I was curious about how much more the mythical 118” high roof was worth over the standard roof. Plugged them into a few online value calculators, and the difference was about $600.

Real-world the difference is probably higher, since more high roof vans have camping amenities added.

Values for these vans are all over the place because of the van build craze. Regionally, they can be waaaay over blue book even without a build if they are not rusted.

Gotta start ordering the other materials: should pick it up Thursday from the body shop, though it still has some mechanical maintenance due. DGC Auto Body (Medford) did a great job.

    Before:

    After:

New grille and headlights. Still haven't decided about the "316 CDI" badge.

Have you tried the toothpaste to polish the lenses trick? No idea if it really works but I have heard some comments that a fine abrasive polishing can clean them up quite a bit.

Replacements from Rock Auto were only $120 each.

We’ve polished old ones with most of the products, and had body shops use their pro products. They’ve always yellowed within a year. We replace them after 10-12 years as it’s a safety issue. You don’t notice how bad they were until you see the new ones.

I got really excited when I saw a projector in the Subaru photo....nope, not the van.

Does your van have leveling motors like mine? Any issues with the aftermarket?

Last weekend I finally installed my new shower (old one busted when I forgot to run the heater while staying with Marco in Bozeman). I also installed the Yakima back swing so I can swing out my bike rack and open the back...and actually use the shower again.

Got it back this morning although there is still some relatively minor bodywork to be done. Wanted to get the mechanical service done and start hauling.

Had 30 minutes so I added some Butyl sound deadener to the top wall panels at roughly 25% coverage. 1-1/2” of thinsulate and some marine vinyl will be going over it at some point. Had this left over from other projects so put it to use.

I'd use either lizard skin or als hnr before adding the thinsulate.
